there is something wrong with the online LAE form. lumalampas sa tamang page. anyway, pede bang ayusin nila? o kaya ayusin namin? baka pag inayos namin maging invalid ang form.

i'll be taking the LAE this year, for the 2nd time. i scored higher than my gf in last year's LAE, she's in the college of law now, ako di naman nkapasa. cumlaude grad kasi sya. nagma-matter talaga ang undergrad grades (something i didnt take seriously during my stay in up) though im not sure if its 50% LAE + 50% acads or 60-40.

oh wow it's been two years. naalala ko i used to frequent the old LAE thread here sa sobrang anxiety ko over the exam.

to return the favor, here's mine.

1. focus on your vocabulary, English vocabulary. if this means literally reading the dictionary, do so.

2. remember the essay part should be direct to the point. first paragraph, your stand on the topic given. just one sentence would do - are you pro or con? then follow it up with your supporting arguments. rebut/refute it with the other side's arguments to make it balanced. then end it with a simple thought-provoking conclusion. for christ's sake, please don't be like the other takers who are thinking of grandiose introductions complete with high-fallutin' words.

3. polish up on your logical/abstract reasoning skills

4. though math is really a small portion (4o questions for 30 minutes! i only got to answer correctly 10 hihihi :hiya: ), this doesn't mean you could be mediocre on that part.

5. pray, pray.

6. lastly, please don't think this is the UPCAT. it's so much more than that! don't be uber confident. get enough preparation, enough sleep. be mentally sound. remember only 200 gets in out of 2000-3000 takers.

P.S. the interview portion is the hardest interview you'll ever encounter that you'll be proud you went through it and passed. *okay*

thanks Precious84. ill be taking the LAE and Ateneo Law Entrance Exam, can you suggest any reviewer available in the market? i really intend to study at UP

sambotido pano yan im not from UP, do you know any other good resources for review materials?

Precious84
Oct 18, 2006, 12:58 AM
^try the LSAT reviewers in the market ;) it'll really, really help. good luck! hope to see you in UP Law's malcolm hall next year!

i underwent kasi a one-day review class and it really helped, of course, along with the LSAT reviewers.

study hard! ;)

An LSAT reviewer will suffice. Just practice answering under time pressure.

The LAE's easy, don't worry too much about it. I suggest you worry more about getting good college grades.

Oct 18, 2006, 02:08 AM
i was thinking of some of my friends who are worried that their college grades would not suffice. bawi bawi sa exam.

precious84, from what block are you?

For the essay part, the grammar and handwriting are also important. Note that the checkers have to read 2000-3000 essays. If they find your handwriting unreadable or notice an error in grammar, they might not have the patience of reading the subsequent pages. Yes, in this case, your essay will be scrapped and you will fail the essay portion of the exam. So remember: fine content + legible handwriting + correct grammar = an "A" essay

IMO, the LAE and UPCAT seem similar in many aspects (except for the fact that it is harder to pass the former due to tighter competition). The subjects in both exams are similar (math, logic, grammar, reading comprehension) but a distinct quality of LAE is its focus on logic. It might help if you familiarize yourself with truth statements (valid, invalid, sound) and word usage (e.g. proper use of the words "may" and "shall").

In my opinion, LAE is a notch higher than UPCAT in terms of difficulty. It is neither hard nor easy. Nonetheless, because of the sheer number of applicants, competition is tight and a single error in an item delivers a big blow on the possibility of you entering the college. So adopt strict scrutiny in answering each question.

I do not know the corresponding weight for LAE and undergrad grades. From hearsay, LAE has more weight than the grades you get in undergrad. If you have high grades for both (we call them halimaw), you are exempted from taking the dreaded interview. If you are a mere mortal (such as I) who have an average of C+/B in undergrad but made it in the LAE cut-off, you are required to have a nice friendly chat with the devil himself.

Although it was not stipulated in the criteria, I think the college where you graduated matters a lot. In our batch, 3/10 are Ateneo graduates, 6/10 are UP graduates, and the remaining tenth are from the other schools. In my class alone, 13 are from ADMU, 17 from UP, 2 from San Beda, 1 from DLSU and Siliman each.
*Note:this is my personal observation... there are probably less applicants from the minority schools, which may be the primary reason for the low student ratio. However, I do hope that this serves as a challenge to those who are not from UP and other top-tier schools. Pakitaan ninyo na kaya niyo rin. From my experience, students not from the top schools are more diligent and patient in law school - 2 attributes which are vital in the study of law.

Good luck to all takers. I'll post interview tips if someone asks for it. But for now, takers should focus on the exam first. For those interested, PM me your numbers so I can forward them to frats/orgs which sponsor LAE reviews this sembreak.

grabe, thanks for the tips. i will really buy an LSAT reviewer later. saang bookstore ako makakabili? any LSAT reviewer author you guys recommend?

by the way, i am a deans lister in school, and awardee naman of a certain coveted award. however, i know it's not enough. i'll condition my mind as if LAE has a 90% bearing on my chance to enter UP Law.

sa mga mageexam naman sa Ateneo Law, may 2nd batch ba of entrance exams? kasi parang napakabilis naman ng sa Ateneo, October 25/27 agad deadline ng submission tapos November 11 exam.

Precious84 where did you undergo one-day LSAT review session?

atenean_blooded
Oct 18, 2006, 09:58 AM
bluethehero:

The Kaplan LSAT reviewer's fine. You don't need to spend a whole lot on reviewers. I think there are also online reviewers.

Re the Ateneo Law entrance test: there are several batches. I'm not sure if this will help, but I hope it does: http://ateneolaw.ateneo.edu/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=20&Itemid=1

P.S. the interview portion is the hardest interview you'll ever encounter that you'll be proud you went through it and passed. *okay*

i've asked some friends who underwent the "dreaded" interview and some of them breezed through it. a friend was even worrying that his interview lasted for only ten minutes (though he refused to divulged what was talked about in his interview), tapos pumasa sya.

a former prof of mine, during his interview in the college of law, was asked what his favorite sport was. then they made him explain how the game is played.

my girlfriend was asked who'll she vote for if danding cojuangco and joe de venecia ran for prime minister.

i think the essence of the interview portion is to test the applicant's grasp of the english language and how he/she reacts to pressure. (tama ba?)

:D

sheeeett....blockie naman, pati ba naman ako papatusin mo? :bop: o siya you versus me and majority of our blockmates who underwent the interview namely....

basta i still maintain, sarap ng feeling na nasa hot seat ka noon sa faculty lounge. sobrang "hot" parang a peek/training at what would happen to you for the next coming years as a UP Law stude. *okay*

@ sambotido, the interview questions and length of time vary. kaya be prepared to be asked about almost anything under the sun. one blockmate was only interviewed for five minutes just because malapit nang maglunch break at dadalawa na lang ang panelists. ako...waah...malas..haha..kumpleto sila...and i was in the hot hot seat for 45 freakin' minutes with my would-be profs that time havin' the time of their life givin me psychological questions...

i've heard somebody was asked about fishing (as in catching a fish, literally) and that's it. he passed.

someone naman was criticized from head to foot why he doesn't have a girlfriend.

the main objective of the interview is not to debase you or make fun of you. it is to test your credibility and how you would react to questions as, in law school or in the court, you'd, more often than not, encounter surprising questions/news. how you deal with it is up to you and serves as the yardstick to your being tough. :)

atenean_blooded can i get that Kaplan reviewer from any bookstore? and about the Ateneo, sorry for a semi-irrelevant question, pero being one of the first applicant doesnt necessarily mean having a slightly higher chance of being admitted right? lastly, can you recommend website for online reviewers? ill buy the reviewer that you recommended right after my final exams.

Precious84 halimbawang maging candidate ako [knock on wood] for interview, makikipag eyeball ako sa iyo ha. do you know a certain group of UP law students who conduct review for aspirants like me for free kahit im not from UP?

@bluethehero, just look around bulletin boards in UP and at the UP Shopping Center bulletin board, may nagpopost dun ng review session. MSA i think holds review sessions for LAE too.

Reviewers (even the Kaplan reviewer) are available in most bookstores. Some of them even have CDs with some media tests you can take on your computer, but those are pretty useless.

Re your question about the Ateneo Law School, I think you're right. Applying early doesn't mean you've got a higher chance of getting in (in fact, it might be a good idea to work a bit harder in the first semester, then submit your first sem grades with your other marks once you submit your application).

For online reviewers, try www.lsac.org or just surf the net for tests.

Atenean_blooded is right. I have those Kaplan reviewers and it helped a lot in my review for the LAE. I haven't tried using the CD though so I can't verify its usefulness.

To all peeps taking the LAE, make the most out of your sembreaks. Practice solving math problems (mostly algebra) if you have the extra time. I forgot to mention this earlier, but the vocabulary portion in the LAE is tough (I only got 4 or 5 out of 20 I think). To this, I offer no solution because knowledge of words depends on one's exposure to readings materials (unless you're willing to memorize the dictionary within 1 month...much better!).

To those who are weak in vocab, I suggest you focus on the Math part. Kumbaga, ito na ang inyong pambawi. Unlike vocab, solving math can be honed by constant practice alone.

Precious84: See you next sem ;) welcome back to the madness that is law school

Just ride one of the ikot jeeps and you'll eventually end up at the shopping center. It's near PNB, the Holy Sacrifice parish, and the Church of the Risen Lord. Near the post office.

I'm sure the reviewer's something you can sell after you use it, or pass around to younger friends who might be interested in taking up law eventually. Remember, the questions there aren't like some sections of the LAE. As some posters here have pointed out, the LAE has a math portion.
