It's pretty hard to advice you on exercises which you can do without knowing what your primary goal in exercising is. To build cardiovascular endurance? To strengthen your back? etc.

well, for one thing is to loose weight... yun bang matangal ang mga bilbil at taba sa katawan na dapat naman eh wala... and of course to build cardiovascular thing... =)

If your primary problem is fat and you also want to build up cardiovascular endurance, then weight machines and weight training won't do much for you. Weight training will help strengthen muscles, but between those muscles and the skin still lies the same amount of fat. To reduce it, you have to use up more calories than you consume, and engaging in activities that burn a lot of calories helps.

My suggestion is that maybe you should start with very brisk walking for initially 30 minutes every other day, then gradually increase this to maybe an hour over time. You may also want to try running, but running may cause low back pains and knee pains in the future, so if you decide to run, be sure to invest in good shoes and thick athletic socks so that your spine won't bear the brunt of jogging. You can do these exercises on a treadmill or around your place. Other exercises which burn calories would include biking, aerobics, swimming (my favorite), and skating. Just be sure to warm up and do stretching exercises for 15 minutes prior to your main exercise routine to avoid injuries, bring water so you won't get dehydrated, and set aside a certain fixed hour in your schedule to exercise, that way you'll be more committed to exercising, rather than trying to fit in your exercise routine whenever you can.

Welcome back, pepperish.

The dumbbells will help. You can try doing the exercise in this (http://thriveonline.oxygen.com/fitness/toning/arms/arms.index.html) link to tone your arms. Just click the links on the right for different types of dumbbell exercises.

That's what my ex-boyfriend called me before: dumbbell. That's why he's my ex now.

Dr. Ira, I read a new study somewhere that muscle-building exercises can also promote weight loss. From what I understood of the study, in-between your exercise days while your muscles are resting, the muscles (or was it the heart) continues to burn calories while building up muscle tissues(?). Very much like in a cardiovascular work-out. What do you think?

I enjoy reading your posts in this forum, Dr. Ira, because you answer the questions here so concisely and with precision, like a topnotch surgeon with a scalpel. Are you a surgeon? Do you like Weird Al Yankovich's "Like a Surgeon" song? Isn't he funny? :D

It's not a new study, it's not the heart, and it doesn't promote weight loss, rather, muscle bulk.

Thank you for your kind words. As for Weird Al Yankovich, uhm, different strokes for different folks I guess.
