EEE Faculty Garner Best Paper Awards
Roel Ocampo, former Chairman of the EEE Department and Director of the UP Computer Center, received the Best Paper prize at the International Conference on Autonomic and Autonomous Systems (ICAS 2006) held last July 19-21, 2006 in Santa Clara, CA. Roel's paper is entitled, "Towards Context-Based Flow Classification", which was co-authored with A. Galis, C. Todd of University College, London and H. de Meer of University of Passau. Roel is currently on study leave from the Department while pursuing his PhD in Electrical Engineering at University College, London under a grant from the UP Doctoral Studies Fund. He has recently passed his PhD oral defense and will rejoin the Department in December 2006.

Gilbert Ching (BSEE 1996, MSEE 2003) won the Best Student Paper Prize at the recently concluded IEEE Personal, Indoor, Mobile Radio Conference (PIMRC) held last Sept. 11-14, 2006 in Helsinki, Finland. Gilbert's paper was awarded Best from Asia-Pacific Region, which is one of three awards (Best from Asia-Pacific, Best from Americas, Best from Europe) given to Student Papers. Gilbert is formerly an Assistant Professor at the Department and previously headed the Communications Engineering Laboratory. He is currently undertaking his doctoral study at the Tokyo Institute of Technology in Japan.
Gilbert's paper is entitled, "WIDEBAND DIRECTIONAL RADIO PROPAGATION CHANNEL ANALYSIS INSIDE AN ARCHED TUNNEL" and is co-authored with Mir Ghoraishi, Navarat Lertsirisopon, Jun-ichi Takada (Department of International Development Engineering, Tokyo Institute of Technology, Japan), Tetsuro Imai (R&D Center, NTT DoCoMo Inc., Japan), Itoji Sameda (Japan Highway Public Corporation) and Hironori Sakamoto (Highway Telecom Engineering Co., Ltd). The IEEE PIMRC is a highly-specialized and reputable conference in the area of wireless and radio frequency communication systems.
