Fact or Fallacy?

1. If you walk barefoot all the time, you'll become flat-footed.

2. When you remove one white hair, two will replace it.

3. To avoid dandruff, you should change shampoo brand every month.

4. Sleeping with a bra or sleeping facedown will cause breast cancer.

5. Eating pumpkin will improve your eyesight.

6. Reading while lying down or while in a moving vehicle is bad.

I'll just post again if I think of others.

Every single one is a fallacy. The last one will cause a headache and might even make you naseous but will not cause long term problems.

hopefully, we can stash all medical myths in this thread, para hindi mahirap hanapin. it's about asking the doctors on board about certain myths that are harmless or should be taken seriously.

===
i heard at the gym that staying too long in a jacuzzi after working out will turn your muscles into mush and you would've lost all you've gained.

Nope. You'll probably just get temporarily dehydrated and look like a prune, but it will come back when you replace the lost fluids.

Ang dami kasing sabi-sabi na ganito, ganyan. I made this thread in order to know what is true and what is not. I'll go first.

Is it bad to cut fingernails or hair when you have a fever?

^ di ako doc pero sa tingin ko hindi bawal. dead cells ang hair at kuko kaya ok lang iyon. pansin mo pag kinucut mo sila wala kang nararamdaman na sakit.

anyway to add
1.) Virgin Coconut Oil branded to be the cure of all cures of most diseases.
2.) Pasma - i heard from a doc that there's no such thing.

I haven't heard of this before. The answer is No.

No it's not, since different diseases have different causes.

2.) Pasma - i heard from a doc that there's no such thing.

There is no scientific study that proves that "pasma" exists, not to my knowledge anyway.

Hindi ba parang puputok ang tagiliran mo pag tumatakbo ng busog. Hindi ba masama yun? But i doubt its the appendix.

How about eating citrus fruits when having a cold? Citrus fruits means vit c. which strengthens your immune system. But if you already have cold, may magagawa pa ba yung oranges?

I've always thought #4 was true. I think most girls do.

It surely hurts if you wear underwire bras and sleep with it. Diba? Try ninyo. If it doesn't give you cancer, it sure is uncomfortable :D

I almost loathed my mother when she found out that I had my first period. She made me:

1) Sit 3 rungs downwards on a ladder so that I'll have only 3 days of menstruation. WTF?! Of course I still get about 5-6 days as most women do.

2) Wipe my face with my washed underwear that I used on the first day of my period because it will lessen your changes of having pimples. WHAT!?!@>?!?!?!? Of course I had to do it since I was a little teenie and my mother was so f***ing insistent that I do it. Guess what, it didn't work.

3) Do not take a bath because "papasukin ng masamang hangin ang genitals mo" / an ill wind will enter your genitals. Seriously, I did NOT heed this. I'm not that crazy.

4) Do not use a napkin lest your period will stop and you'll have tumors. *bangs head on wall* For two rounds of my period, I used "pasador" and it was hell.

The ones I would like some clarification on are the ff:

Pagtutuyo ng pawis

Cold/sweet foods in relation to sore throat/tonsilitis

Are there any scientific bases for these things?

Thanks for all your help :)

Tjmd

pagtutuyo ng pawis is a myth.. if you think about it, the purpose of sweat is to dry up on our skin. Evaporating sweat cools the body which ....happens to be the main purpose of sweat.

Sore throat and tonsillitis are caused by viruses and some bacterias. Cold and sweet foods do not play a role.

One medical phenomenon was however proven. It seems that most people get sick during cold winter months. Apparently breathing cold air somehow alters the protective mechanism of our respiratory system including our lungs. As a result we are more susceptible to colds or respiratory problems caused by viruses and bacterias.

But this probably only works on more northern countries where cold temperature can go as low as 0 celcius. A tropical country like the philippines probably isn't included even when you are staying in an airconditioned room all day.

Doc/s, is taking a bath at night for around forty to sixty minutes detrimental to one's health? I mean are there long term effects of this especially when you reach late adulthood? I feel so chronically fatigued most of the time even though I have enough sleep.

5. Eating pumpkin will improve your eyesight.

6. Reading while lying down or while in a moving vehicle is bad.

5: dito talaga ako napaniwala ng nanay ko kasi daw may vitamin something na pampalinaw ng mata..just like carrots..?

6: I think kaya nasabing masama pag nasa moving vehicle kasi may motion kaya unstable yung binabasa e pag ganun masakit sa mata kasi gumagalaw yung object? pero may nakita ako sa chart na bawal to eh..
