To be more specific..can depression/stress be linked to cancer? This question has something to do with someone very close to me who died a few years ago.
I would appreciate any feedback from Ira, Batang Uliran, Grumpy or others who could shed some light on this subject.

Hi, P.I. Joe, according to psychiatry textbooks, there are many, many potential medical causes of depression (and of course, stress), and cancer (especially pancreatic and other gastrointestinal types) is one of them. Brain (pituitary) tumors (not necessarily malignant) can also cause depression. Other causes include neurological problems, endocrine problems, infections, inflammations, heart and lung problems, vitamin deficiency, and medications like antibiotics, steroids, and antihypertensive drugs.
Of course, depression as an effect of knowing that you have cancer is intimately linked.
Hope this helps.

Try sports or exercise. Or get a hobby? When I get stressed I go either window shopping, swimming, or cooking.

Breathe. The oxygen does wonders to the brain. Choose the place where u'll get it of course! And yes, take time to literally smell the flowers...while ur at it try and see if u can spot a butterfly (when was the last time u've seen one? specially a live one). At night, look up and see the stars!

try getting to a gym, or do an aero. Why not try jogging to a nearby park?

Hi doc! Starting this coming Monday i'll be having 18 1/2 hrs work for 2-3 weeks more! That's why i'm scared because I might get lack of sleep. I haven't done this before and it's a challenge for me.
Here's my question:
1. Is there a medicine for Stress? What brand? I hope it's over the counter only because it's hard/expensive to get prescription.
2. What are the risks of not sleeping well?
This is just for a couple of weeks but the minimum is 2 weeks but maximum is 3 weeks... I hope i'm fine! Help!!!

i am not a doctor but i believe that there are no specific medication for stress. stresstabs specifically are like other multivitamins around. siguro you can take any multivitamin around for added support. but don't sacrifice your food. as much as possible, avoid fastfood --magbaon ka nalang, paluto mo nalang sa mommy mo (lagyan mo ng veggies ang food mo) and of course, fruits.
risks ng di pagtulog? maybe BU can answer this better. pero syempre kapag kulang sa tulog, your body may not function very well--including your mind diba?
try to find some naps nalang siguro...

i've a question, about stress and women. do women stress out easily than men? if so, is it because they are more emotional/attuned with their emotions? .... does that mean that they handle stress well? or cope up with it better than men?
:wondering:
thanks!

Hmmmm....good question.
I believe society gives different stress levels for different people in it. Women are pressured more into being good moms and wives, while men are pressured more in the corporate and working world. Of course, this is changing.

try escaping reality for a while by watching a movie or reading a book. take long walks. or try free writing. get a pen and paper then just feel free to write down your thoughts. write anything that comes into your mind. don't think. just write...

Depends on what's causing the stress.
Coffee and long hours at the coffee shop works well for me.
Spa treatments also.

you just manage it, try deep breathing exercises or other relaxation techniques. If you can, stay away from stressors (eg problematic people, watching negative news, excessive noise ) and always manage your time to avoid cramming and deadlines. Getting a pet ( aquarium's a good idea ) or taking care of your plants can also be effective. Vitamin C and B complex supplements helps too.

create a diversion.
if you're stuck at school/work 5 days in a week, on weekends, plan something. go out. be spontaneous. do things you always wanted to do - like eat in a resto you never tried before, take a walk in a park, etc.

Docs, how would you determine a person is under stress? I'm really curious, because I had this minor disorder and stress is one of its causes..
Losing my confidence...

^Please wait for the reply of the physicians. Please read this entire merged thread.
From personal experience, I can honestly tell you that exercise really works.
If you ever find yourself in a very stressful situation, it usually helps to stop whatever your doing, step back , take a deep breath and relax for while.

I take magnesium supplement 400mg/day. It helps relax your tensed muscles under stress.
