Okay, fine, the film is like a lengthy cenacle session but is full of Christian values and family drama. It serves as a ‘reminder of love’ for us all this Christmas season. ‘Matriarch’ Gloria Romero deserves an acting award. Ms. D. is so beautiful (sana gf kita hehehe) Congratulations to Direk Laurice!

*sigh*
All I did was cry throughout the movie. Ang babaw ko talaga.
This is a must-see movie...you'll see a glimpse of your own self in the characters portrayed.

It was an above average movie. The movie really worked for me. However, I wish that Guillen held back a little in some parts and that better actors than John Prats and Janette McBride were used.

i thoguht Janette McBride was supposed to be a "revelation"?
anyways, it looks good but don't Filipino dramas tend to be dragging?! was this dragging?

homeBuddy, it wasn't dragging for me. It dealt with a lot of lives so you won't get bored watching it.

watched this one last night......a real tearjerker....but it gives one hope to keep the faith....it gives one an idea of the miracle of forgiveness...and sharing...of real love...
maganda ksi nde pilit yung pagda-drama nila....
ang galing ni Johnny Delgado.....as in!!!
McBride didn't really stand out....in terms of acting....same with John Prats....but i loved McBride's character because despite her Western ways, she values her dad so much.....
of course, Gloria romero was short of perfect for the role...
really........a must-see for people with families (read: all of us)
actually....i like the selection of this year's film fest

Yup! His acting is very natural. He really is good. Underrated talaga si Johnny Delgado! He deserves to be recognized because of this movie.
As usual, magaling din si Edu Manzano. Mukhang mahirap ata labanan sa MMFF. Lalo na with Deathrow's Cogie Domingo and Eddie Garcia.

ok, i'll go with my positive observations first. most of the actors in the movie can act, and there are a couple of scenes which are actually moving (gloria getting wedding dress for daughter; gloria recognizing singing voice despite her alzheimer's disease). the shots are very nice, effective use of foregrounds and the likes.
now on to my criticism. i found the movie to be a long cliche--the rich are miserable, the poor are happy, jericho is miraculously saved. the characters are overly simplistic plus there are scenes that can be taken out (the roles of the ice skater and dominic ochoa).
i would have liked it better if it were less preachy. more than that, i don't know why happy endings always have to be getting what you want or expect. u can have a tragedy, rise above it, gain back hope and faith, and that would be a happy ending too. i don't understand why pinoy films should always be fairy tales.

watched it na...
it was an entertaining film. it's another emotional tug-of-war movie. there are very artistic scenes. some very powerful ones as well --- gloria romero should win best actress... i swear. pero artistically (and i'm a lay man here, sorry to film critics and/or film enthusiasts who know more about film than i do), i don't think it's an artistic movie. a lot of loose ends were still found in the end. if you're leaving a film open-ended, make sure na maiisip pa rin ng audience na ganoon nga talaga. pero here, so much was left for the audience to "figure out" on their own. dominic-mads love team. ano ba talaga yung symbolic meaning ng ice skater-jericho rosales thing? ano na ngayon yung nangyari kay gloria romero? (fine akala ko sa dulo mamamatay na siya dahil nagpasalamat siya at may matinding white light, pero buhay naman pala accdg to johnny delgado) what with the mother-daughter relationship of dina and daugher (na may link naman sa bed iyakan scene with gloria romero)? labo ng character ng younger bro ni jericho rosales. sobrang emotionally disturbed ni jericho sa movie, ganoon ba kadali i-repare yon?
things like that...
and BAHKET SI JOHN PRATTS KINUHA?!?!?!!! walang accent. mas may accent yung nakatatandang kapatid niya na si madz. tama ba yon?! may mga moments na sobrang pilit yung american accent na nakakasuka... sorry talaga...

Okay, since a lot of people have been raving about this movie, then I guess it's really good. HOWEVER, what ruins it for me is that it's from ABS-CBN (yes, yes, I know I'm biased), it was publicized too much, and it's SOOOOOO showbiz! They even had merch materials for the movie! And they had that crying session promo material earlier. If you look at that alone, it was really moving since they (Jericho Rosales, Marvin Augustin, Carol Banawa, even Laurice Guillen) were really talking about their real lives. But, if you look at the whole picture - thinking about that crying session makes me sick. Imagine exploiting these people for the promotions of the movie. Grabe, for me that was really low. Also, I think the story is so typical, just like the Ping Lacson story. Features a family who fights blah blah. Very much unlike Markova and Deathrow, which features stories with plots that are not overused.
But before anyone bashes me... this is just my opinion. My opinion will not change the fact that Tanging Yaman is the best picture of this year's MMFF. And it will not change the fact that it was a good movie. At the end of the day, you really look at the movie as it is - with its cinematography, the actors' performances, the story, etc. And at the end of the day, without all the biases, the promotions and hoopla, I guess this is really a good movie (since a lot of people are raving about it, even respectable people who know what they are talking about when it comes to cinema). (Pero teka, panoorin ko muna kung talagang okay siya. :D )

:D i may be the exact opposite of Caramba ;) i watched Tanging Yaman before i watched Death Row, precisely because the latter was from GMA...IMHO, Butch Jimenez may be the biggest hypocrite in showbiz today...he talks about not really wanting to win awards, but when their movie does, he's the first to brag about it with their 2-minute commercial show-offs tainted with exaggerations and BS, numerous TV appearances repeating their pa-humble effect over and over again (which makes me sick to the bones), and daily write-ups in the broadsheets, highlighting on how their movies is the big savior of philippine cinema nad what a big cultural mumbo-jumbo their movie is...and this year, perhaps sensing that they're gonna lose to Tanging Yaman, reiterated that they're not making movies for the awards ek-ek, and that their movie is still the best as far as they're concerned....Jimenez makes me ****
anyway, "Tanging Yaman" was good enough to merit this year's top awards...the performance by some of the actors were great; johhny delgado deserved every inch of that trophy he got, ditto for gloria romero....as for the rest of the group  well, they were mediocre....hilda coronel was good, but the scene where he slapped and then comforted marvin agustin killed any chance of an acting award for her....marvin agustin was his usual OA self, jericho rosales and janet mcbride weren't THAT big of revelations either, while dina bonnevie's and edu manzano's roles were just too one-dimensional to be considered for acting awards....
perhaps the biggest problem of the film were the numerous loopholes in the script....a lot of "weird" stuff, coupled with some side-shows which weren't really needed spoiled the movie....bat bigla na lang nagalit si marvin agustin habang kumakain sila? sa lahat-lahat naman ng puwedeng picture-an, bat naman yung naga-ice skating pa? chaka bat ganun yung mukha ni jericho rosales habang nagpi-picture siya, na para bang model ng playboy yung kinukunan niya? bat biglang nagbago yung character ni janet mcbride, mula sa rocker, napunta sa sweet sixteen character, hindi ba mashadong mabilis? and as pyket observed, ba't ang bilis ng recovery ni jericho rosales, eh ayun na nga't papatayin na niya si edu, tapos ganun-ganun lang, ayus na?!?! to top it all, an overly corny and predictable ending was a given 30 minutes before it was shown...maybe the director didn't want to spoil the viewer's holidays with a tragic ending, pero sobra namang baduy....they should've at least killed rosales' character, to establish a more credible ending na kelangan pa palang mamatay ang isa satin para lang magka-bati-bati tayo....or better yet, they could've shown that gloria romero was just faking her disease para lang ma-fix yung family niya....
overall, "Tanging Yaman" is a must-see for the whole family...it's your typical disfunctional family drama with a joyous ending where we can live happily ever after, but maybe that's what everyone needs--a portrait of ourselves, and not some tough cop or comfort gay or ghost fighter or human rights advocate....it's a good movie, definitely the best among the 6 MMFF entries, but it could have been better...

*SPOILER ALERT*
IMO, a tragic ending (i.e. Jericho Rosales' character dying instead of the miraculous rescue) belongs to a much longer movie if Edu Manzano's character transformation would come across as credible at all.
Other than the comment about the ending, neth_row's reaction is very close to mine.

i agree with neth_row, nakakainis yung kayabangan ni butch jimenez, i read once in an article, he said in an interview ir response to the question, do you see a three-peat for GMA?, "ayoko sanang isipin, pero yun at yun yung sinasabi sa akin, makaka-three in a row kami." Hahaha! Too bad Jimenes did not play his own prophet. Good thing, TY was there to spoil and to make JImenez learn his lesson.
But Jimenez' attitude should not reflect on the film. I still believe in the product, but not the producer.
Anyway, i did not really rave about Tanging Yaman. But, it is a well-done film with great performances from its actors, very natural acting. But I agree with what others are saying regarding the loopholes in the story, like the ending. I like McBride's character, and for a newcomer, I think her acting is not that bad at all. Although, it leaves something to desire pa. JOhn Pratts is so OA. But Johnny delGado and Gloria Romero were really spectacular in the film.
But in terms of "crying", I cried in Anak more than I did with this movie.

Tanging Yaman had no dull moments. Ganda ng umpisa. Great cast. Great cinematography, too. Throughout the movie, my cousins were either laughing ( thanks to John Prats...) or in a serious mood. Galing nung scene na nalunod si Jericho, at may guardian angel (?) na sumagip sa kanya. Galing ng post-prod. hehe.
Kaya lang, parang nabitin sa ending. Whatever happened to the lot they were selling? Whatever happened to Gloria Romero? Whatever happened to Dominic Ochoa? Oops... am I giving away too much of the movie? Anyway, you guys should watch this film. It's one of those films na di dapat palampasin.
btw, ganda rin ng boses ni Carol Banawa. Very clear, very pure. Does anyone know if that was recorded in live?

i watched tanging yaman and deathrow wednesday even before i learned who won the night before, so there was no pre-judgment on my part whether dis and dat deserve their respective awards.
tanging yaman is a good movie. as rightfully pointed out by those who have seen it, ang ganda ng umpisa (promising, i said to myself); competent cast (ensemble acting nga); and beautiful cinematography and musical score. what i didn't like though was the ending. para talagang bitin! hinintay lang magkabati-bati ang lahat, tapos na! it reminds me of The Prince of Egypt. pagkatapos tumawid ng dagat, ending na.
i guess what made matters worse is the long gap between the "gloria against strong light" scene and edu's last sequence that you'll ask yourself: ending na ba 'yon?; the extended shot of dina and joel walking towards the golden gate bridge that nearly drove me to shout from my seat: don't tell me that that's your ending?; and that when it finally ended the way it did, you'll say: 'yun na 'yon? kainis!
let's talk about the sub-plots. marvin agustin's suppressed feelings towards his dad. the sudden outburst was uncalled for. OA ang dating! the ice-skating scene was included kasi anak ni direk 'yung ice-skater. not 100% sure though but i think she really is, if i'm not mistaken. in fairness though to direk, pinakita lang that even the "simplest" thing (like ice-skating) is a sight to behold to one who has an eye for beauty and whose taste is simple (which is essential to jericho's character). dominic ochoa's character, on the other hand was inserted to provide, not the proverbial kilig factor, but the film's local color. having asked dominic to show the balikbayan around, direk was able to show the lahar landscape (which is important if direk has her sights fixed in film festivals abroad). ironically, who would buy substantial landholdings at ONE MILLION PESOS per hectare in laharlandia?
acting-wise, i could not disagree with the judges' choice of johnny delgado as best actor. he was consistent from start to finish that he had his audience all mesmerized. gloria romero was equally good. she deserved her award, for sentimental reasons or otherwise. dina bonnevie? i was never a fan of her acting but in my opinion she provided the best performance among the supporting players. ang galeng pala n'ya! hilda koronel. it was a small role, really! edu manzano. i've seen that before. nothing new, really! jericho rosales. bakit nga ba napaka-itim eh rich boy ang role n'ya? dominic ochoa. too good looking to be a tri-cicle driver bagama't mukhang promdi talaga! carol banawa. great voice. janet mcbride. she's good, ha! john pratts. no fireworks (i'm not referring to the fireworks he missed in pier 39, it's his performance, stupid)! LOL!

May jologs pala na am-boy…?!?hehehe…kidding…pero di talaga kasi bagay kay John Pratts maging am-boy…the accent was just too far off…mas ok nga kung only child na lang! Janette McBride and Dominic Ochoa’s brief love stint, as most of u stated, was an unnecessary part of the film…but in all fairness to them…wouldn’t it be very odd if such a beautiful young lady from the US were to come here and not be hit on at least by one of the locals? If she didn’t get involved at the slightest bit with anyone among the locals in the film then most probably that’s what we would be questioning. I think it that little involvement with one another was just a realistic portrayal on what could have happened…however it was just too unsubstantial that it didn’t contribute much to the whole scenario…they could’ve at least made it blossom into a more fruitful event…
But anyway, go see it. It’s worth more than what u paid for. As the others said there are many loopholes but it shouldn’t be a reason why it should be considered as a bad movie. It’s still a great movie and you’ll learn a thing or two about love and self-giving.

i don't usually watch Tagalog movies but since it's the film fest and there's nothing else to watch...i decided to go see this...
TY is a very good movie! one of the best Filipino films i've seen...a lot of people can identify with it and the actor are so good! napaka-natural nila! Hilda Koronel and Johnny Delgado were really good! Gloria Romero was nakaka-awa in her role...she was good too...Janette McBride!!! wow!! ganda niya! she can act too...konting polishing na lang...the others are really good too...mapipikon ka talaga kay Edu and Dina was pretty good too! the young cast didn't do much except for Marvin, Jericho and Janette...
i agree na maraming loopholes sa plot...other than the ones mentioned na...i just wanna know what was up with Grace slapping Mads? labo noon!!! i think the panira of the movie was when the "angel" saved Jericho...medyo sumobra ata yung pagiging preachy...it made its message clear talaga but i think it ruined the movie...they shouldn't have put "supernatural" stuff na...i agree...they should've let Jericho die na lang.....despite those i think it's a good movie to watch with the family...it was just ruined by being too preachy...
if u want to alugh out loud...go see this and watch John Pratts' interpretation of an Amboy! haha!!! "Mam, Dad's gat samteeng for you" haha!

Syempre, since this movie is very good, hahanapan mo ng butas. May be shallow but in reality, mestiza Amgirls usually fall for exotic looking local blokes. Dominic Ochoa is too mestizo. Pinagpalit sana characters nila ni Jericho Rosales (then again, Jericho is the bigger star so malabo ata yon).
Off topic but since people are mentioning great acting, Pen Medina and Ray Ventura were brilliant in 'Death Row'.

i agree with angelicDAW on the miracle: it didn't belong in the movie. the boy could have been saved some other way, or they didn't need to show it like that. it kind of destroyed the role of religion there by making it cheesy and unbelievable. in that sense, i don't agree that this movie is a must see by Christian families. it's a must-see, definitely; pero nakakainis talaga yung miracle eh!!

KOL!...nakakatawa pala is Dominic Ochoa...hehehe.
I have to say that John Pratts' acting leaves MUCH to be desired. ang pangit pa ng kanyang accent. di nga slang eh. "trying-hard" slang is a better term for it. :p dapat si janette mcbride nalang ang anak nila. hindi naman impt ang role ni john, eh. like, really, what DID he do?!
marvin agustin...ugh. i really don't like him. sobrang OA.
overall, i thought the movie was ok. there should be more movies like it, pero sana bawasan ang cheesy, weird parts. like that ice-skater na pini-picturan ni Jericho. ba't ganun ang mukha niya dun? nalito na ko, ano ba, bading ba siya or did he like the girl?!
sana something tragic happened. it seems like the normal family plot in filipino movies...realistic events, kaso, the ending was nice and happy. nge. the ending in real life is hardly ever nice and happy. sana namatay si jericho sa movie, so they could show how the family changed because of a tragedy. pero teka - hahaba masyado yung film. so ano yun? yun ba yung climax? nge. sa tingin ko sobrang daming minor scenes which made the movie reach the climax in such a long time.
oh well...it was an interesting movie. at least hindi dull. you get your money's worth. :)
