On the IT Side not their Call Centers, they are both competitive in benefits synonymous to their Competition in IT.

HP. IBM is a dying dinosaur.

I'd go for IBM, if this were on the international scale. (not locally) IBM's portfolio is way more comprehensive than HP. :-P I know that in the past year HP beat IBM in terms of revenue, but that's because of huge cost-cutting measures.

IBM if you want to go for the long term. HP here in the Philippines has no long term potential, especially considering the fact that their clients are very very limited.

Since HP is still new in the Philippines, it's still expanding and establishing its place here. AFAIK more and more clients and jobs are being brought here.

Err.. you didn't get me. I said that if we're looking on the international scale, it still has to be IBM. (Reading comprehension goes a long way...)
IBM can compete with both Oracle and HP, in the software and hardware side. HP cannot compete with IBM in terms of software. I believe the landmark application of HP in software is HP Openview, which is used more for service management (for supporting IT infrastructure, think service desk/call center). They don't have the vertical stack that both IBM and Oracle have, spanning from backend databases (DB2 and Oracle) to business applications and platforms. IBM also merged with Rational so that it can better compete in the J2EE platform space. (where Oracle's App server and IBM Websphere are the larger vendors) I don't think HP has those.
In terms of hardware, IBM also has laptops (Thinkpad) and the high-end servers competing with both Sun Microsystems and HP. I believe HP's hardware portfolio is more comprehensive than IBM, since they also sell printers and cameras (cameras which sold badly, I think they were already phased out), and personal computers, handhelds. But if you're going to consider the whole vertical stack - from databases and servers to middleware then to business applications, IBM still wins. We can't just dismiss IBM as a dying dinosaur without basis.
Locally, I think HP Technology Solutions Group here is bigger than IBM Solutions Delivery. That's why I'm looking at it on the international scale.

IBM, the once mighty PC company, already sold its PC business to Lenovo
Looking at it in the local scale, just like any BPO IT company, pareho lang yan nanganganib sa CHINA! :rotflmao:

What do you mean by this? When it comes to IBM, this is a very broad term.
IBM competes with almost every single IT Company in the World, Microsoft, Oracle, Sun, HP, etc are both partners and competitors to IBM. Even Consulting Firms such as Accenture, Bearingpoint, Capgemini, etc.

From Wikipedia
IBM's PC division was bought by Chinese company Lenovo on May 1, 2005 for $655 million in cash and $600 million in Lenovo stock. On January 25, 2007, Ricoh announced purchase of IBM Printing Systems Division for $725 million and investment in 3-year joint venture to form a new Ricoh subsidiary, InfoPrint Solutions Company; Ricoh will own a 51% share, and IBM will own a 49% share in InfoPrint.
For Printers
IBM (Lexmark) vs HP (Deskjet and Laserjets)
For Printers Enterprise High Impact Printing
InfoPrint Solutions (IBM and RICOH) vs HP(none)
Remember HP brought Compaq years ago to compete at par with IBM on Enterprise Solutions and Servers, Compaq was competitive with IBM on both Enterprise and Servers solution during that time. HP was No.1 in imaging industry only. Today HP still carried the "Proliant" brand for servers and "Compaq" on some notebooks. HP made it close with IBM after the merger but not long due to business politics by thi er CEO
I will not elaborate how HP CEO was kicked-out on 2005 from HP I will leave it up for you to know.
IBM has a very rich history as far as WWII. Check it out.
Some of the competitors here in the Phils even hired or pirated IBM specialists to carry their products in market competition.

Since this thread belongs to a forum called "The Working Filipino" and I assume the question "HP or IBM" refers to your choice of a company to work for, my vote definitely goes to HP.
Having a good portfolio of products does not necessarily equate to being a good employer.

work and career wise,i'd go with HP. The work and technology that you would be handling for HP has more value in the long run(SAP,J2EE,ORACLE,BA skills). They also tailor your skill to your actual work.
IBM on the other hand has a lot of IBM propriatary stuff going on which has little value outside IBM (LOTUS NOTES,BRIO,PL1,RATIONAL) they are just starting to ride the SAP and J2EE bandwagon which has peaked years ago. So be ready to move around the tech and be a jack of all trades and master of none.

IBM has embraced the Open Source Community, so if you are fond of JAVA and Linux they have it.
HP is a good employer but it takes a lot of effort to be an IBM employee. Dadaan ka sa butas ng karayum.
Experience in IBM products have the edge on market value. Eventhough they are proprietary
Example in a fair market, whom do you think has the edge on market value IBM AIX or HP-UX? And of course no competition for HP on RPG, HP is more on Microsoft.

if i got my stats right, when it comes to IT service, IBM is still the top company. #4 pa lang ang HP. HP is still young when it comes to IT. But they are growing really really fast. However, when it comes to revenue, #1 IT company ang HP ($104Billion) while #2 ang IBM ($98Billion).
I guess if you want a stable company with a really good pay, go for HP. If you want to work for a good IT company that delivers good service even if the pay is much lower, go for IBM.

i believe #1 na ang HP (or atleast almost tie with IBM) in IT services dahil kaka-acquire lang nila ang EDS.
It simply shows that HP is putting investments and focusing in the IT services and are planning on expanding and topping on this category. Kaya I put my vote on HP :)

What's EDS?
EDS is the latest acquisitioned company of HP. It means 'Electronic Data System.' It is a global business and technology services company headquartered in Plano, Texas. Just like what i posted earlier, HP is growing really really fast. And one of its best moves was to buy EDS. And next year, magiging ISO 20000 certified na ang HP so magiging ka-level niya na ang top IT companies like IBM, DELL and Accenture. So, there's no doubt na in a couple of years, magiging #1 IT company ang HP in terms of both service delivery and revenue. But as far as I know, at this point in time, IBM remains the top IT company when it comes to service delivery, but HP is really the biggest threat to IBM. According to Fortune 500, the #1 IT company in the world in terms of revenue is HP, beating IBM. Soon, magiging #1 IT company na din ang HP beating IBM, DELL and Accenture. This is not just a random prediction. Based from the current situation, HP has the edge talaga, hindi nga ito masyadong apektado ng US Economic Crisis unlike other MNC's. Walang freeze-hiring or cost-cutting and other stuff unlike these other companies.

Hmmm... hindi na naman secret ito eh. So, i'll say it na. It's Unilever. Nagsign na ng 7-year contract extension ang HP with Unilever early this year if you've read the news. Hindi naman siya confidential. (Unlike Accenture na sobrang confidential ang mga accounts na hinahawakan nila, bakit kaya?) Kaya nga expanding talaga ang HP to death. Constant ang hiring nila... Come to think of it, competitors ang P&G and Unilever. Pero, wala namang nagiging problema.
Clarify lang pala, yung Unilever, hindi lahat ng outsourcing nila ay inaaward nila sa HP, a huge part of its outsourcing (like HR outsourcing) ay nasa Accenture pa rin hanggang ngayon. It would work well for HP talaga if yung buong Unilever maging HP account na...

I never worked for IBM, but I did for HP. Siguro if you're considering HP, ang advice ko lang is... research the department you are applying to. (What will your work be? Will you learn anything? Will you work on shifts?) Meron kasing magagandang departments sa HP where you'll learn a lot of things, at meron ding departments na magiging alila ka lang at mabobobo. <-- Pag napansin mong ganito na ang worklife mo, resign na agad before it's too late. Otherwise, mahihirapan kang makahanap ng ibang trabaho.
