If a diplomatic life is what you want, then a career at the DFA is for you.
The DFA holds a yearly exam for prospective Foreign Service Officers or FSOs. FSOs hold managerial positions at the Home Office and the different Philippine missions worldwide. FSOs help protect, defend and consolidate Philippine interests worldwide, through our network of Embassies, Consulates-General and Consulates.
The FSO Exam is usually held at the middle of the year. Questions are typically on the following topics: (a.) Philippine history, politics and government; (b.) World history, politics and government (particular emphasis on Asia); (c.) Economics; (d.) Current Events; (e.)Filipino Overseas Workers.
If you pass the FSO Exam, you will undergo several more exams, i.e. panel interviews and a formal dinner (which simulates a diplomatic gathering).
If you pass these battery of tests, you will then take your oath as FSO IV, and will be required to render service at the Manila Home Office for three years, after which you will be assigned to a foreign posting for six years, then back to Manila for 3 years, then posting again for six years and so on.
Diplomacy is not all cocktails and diplomatic dinners. It involves persistent defense of all Philippine concerns in your area of posting. It also involves assistance to our nationals abroad. It also involves processing of passports and other travel documents. It also involves economic liaisons that will contribute to the economic well-being of the Philippines.
If you are a patriot and possess the desire to serve your country's interests both here and abroad, then a career at the DFA is for you.
