Spaghetti,

Okey lang yan. That's very normal. :) Having said that, I'd like to advise you not to make the "mistake" I made as a freshgrad. And that is, taking the first job that even shows a REMOTE interest in you.

Although admittedly, jobs are scarce. Especially with Erap out there screwing up the economy. But in a perfect world, you choose the job. The job doesn't choose you. It's like searching for a girlfriend (or a boyfriend) whichever way you want to look at it. You don't choose the first one who looks your way. It takes time to get to know a person, in as much as it takes time to get to know a job. (Yikes that sounds reeeeally cheesy  ! )

Like for example, for my first job, I took the first one that came along. Didn't really care where it was.. oh yeah.. did the usual round.. you know submitting resumes to where I THOUGHT I should submit a resume.. places like San Miguel, PNG, Unilever.. you know... where everyone ELSE was submitting resumes.. never mind if I thought "Ewww.. why would I want to work there..?" (No offense, guys.) Point being really just doing what everyone else was doing, just to avoid being "out of it". That's like pissing blind, and hoping your pee lands in the toilet bowl.. You get what I mean.. :D

If you want your PEE to end up in the TOILET BOWL, then BY GOM, *AIM* for the toilet bowl!*

As it turned out, though, my first job as a Marketing Assistant in a bank, was not such a bad idea. Pay was terrible. P7,000 gross - and that was already Pay Grade 5 of 6..!

Made a lot of friends there. That's more important than money. Money can't buy friends (unless you're Erap - but those don't count.) If I had been a little "wiser" would I have met those people? Probably not.. which sets in motion this whole "What if I... Who would I be today...?" thought. But you don't want to got there. It's nice to speculate once in a while, but then reality kicks in. I like who I am today.

From that first job, I may not have learned what I *wanted* to do in life, but at least I learned what I *didn't want* to do in life. Does this make sense to you?

My second job was being a High School teacher. I miss those days, sometimes. Other times, I wake up in the middle of night, nightmares of being a high school teacher still fresh in my mind. Was it Charles Dickens who said, "It was the best of times, the worst of times" ?

True. Reached out to a lot of students. Got ignored by a majority. Pissed off a few. But who cares. I made some difference, then it was time to move on again.

Oh, by the way, met the *missus* at the high school

Definitely meant to teach at the high school :D

Hooked up with a dot.com for about a month, came and went, but made a lot of friends like Ada, Leigh, Katzmeeow, BrownPau.

I figured I took the low-pay, employee-path in a job I wasn't really interested in (#1), took a job as a teacher, low-pay, high rewards (#2), took a job that would have been high-pay, high-interest but didn't work out (#3), and now am where I am right now.

I've hooked up with a Consulting firm :) Just two of us in the company, but we're making strides. Can work from home, go out talk with people, see what they need, provide them with solutions to their problems, close deals.. It's fun actually. It's definitely not a 9-5 job where you report to work in a square building and work within a square cubicle! It means much-less parking fees, and more telecommuting.

So I think I've come some way since graduating.

From having no plan, to having some plan, to getting a better picture of what you really want to do.

Go ahead. Take a chance, explore. The world is a big place. You don't discover your place right away, but you will in time :D

hello spaghetti =)

I can honestly say i know how you feel. =) i was like that also 8 months ago, and... ;)

lost kung baga =)

the thing is, it's really hard to pinpoint what you want to do...do you have a particular field in mind?

tips from Leigh (if you are thinking of working):
-know what you are good at.
-think of what you want to do 5, 10, 20 years from now.
-think if you would like a long term or a short term job.
-think of what are your priorities...kung good pay, good training, good location, good working environment.

for studying naman:
-think of what will help you...kung computers ba or kung arts...certificate courses.
-think if you can work and study at the same time.
-check also if you can get the degree you want without work experience...

Hi Spaghetti! :) Well, I have 3 jobs and I'm still a college student. I graduated from my Comp. Science course just last year and I'm taking up a second course of Bus. Managment. Well, if you don't plan to persue a second course eh I'd suggest that you find a job as early as possible kasi mahirap ngayon ang panahon... you have a lot of competition now eh papaano pa kaya sa future diba!?:) I was very lucky that I have these 3 great jobs and now I'm just saving for the future.

Assignments, research works, exams, reports, thesis, etc. they are all part of school activities. It's better to experience the pressures in class 'coz you may experience the same thing when your working already. Do your best! At least matutunan din ninyo kung ano rin ang mga ginagawa namin when we were also in school like you guys & girls...
After college what? The best thing to do next is to find a job... God bless to all who will graduate!!!

spag,

actually, yeah mas masarap nga magstudy kaysa magwork. :)

kasi pag student ka pa, allowance, pag working na, you really work your way to spend some money, parang nakakahiya naman to ask for money pa di ba? :)

and with studying, parang happy go lucky pa kayong lahat and when you reach the working stage, you end up thinking of more serious stuff :)

o, jon, sa IT, kung CSB ka, i guess CA ang course mo...goodluck. what are ur strengths ba?

Hey guys - is it ok to take a 2 month break after graduation before i start working? See, i turned down 2 job offers already because I'm going to the States for a one month vacation (Mar to April). Am graduating on Feb. Will this 2 month break affect my chances in landing a job? I'm taking a short course in computer now - don't want to bum around the house kasi eh.

ack!!!!

what a thread...oh well probably because i can relate to the topic.....

ok lang yan, no...lahat naman ata (well, majority) at a loss the moment they graduate...i was at a loss after graduation. after all, i'm a probinsiyano with no "ninongs" from manila to help me with life after graduation. i guess lalo na nung feb na and with all the exams and last minute preparations, hahaluan pa ng panic attacks because of all the uncertainty it was terrible!!!!

sabi nga ni noisy cricket, the first job ususally sucks. it still does for me (i'm still in my first job), and yes, it took me 7 months to get it (minus the 1 month vacation back in the province...)i guess what ususally happens is that especially with all the uncertainty around us, fresh grads tend to grab the first job they are offered....especially for people like me who had a difficult time looking for a job.

take time to reflect on what you really want to do, even if you know that fulfulling what you want is usually a luxury these days...

i actually found it assuring to talk to my parents about whatever plans i have....after all they have experienced so much....

all i can say is this...bum around for a couple of months but look around and feel the water while you're at it. it may be hard to look for a job but you're gonna have to do it anyway so whats the use of procastinating? i bummed out for 5 months after college and i got pretty tired of it na rin.

masterals are cool but its a big commitment too. if you start with it...i advise you to go full throttle for two years and finish it right away. mahirap pag ang ginawa mo eh "aral ng isang sem-trabaho ng konti-aral uli-trabaho"
there's a big danger na lalo kang walang matapos. as much as possible try to be focused on only one thing...

as for now, thesis muna :) pinoproblema mo na trabaho eh wala ka pa nga dun! enjoy every last part of your student life. trust me...youll miss it...BIG TIME.:D

good luck sa inyo ng thesis group mo! :D

jon,

actually with the experience part, there is nothing wrong in trying naman eh. my friends told me before that companies really prefer those with experience but they didn't say naman daw in the ad that they don't want fresh grads or something to that effect, di ba? there is nothing wrong in trying.

hi spag,
you know, i searched for this thread again kasi i want to know what happened to your search na...you done with thesis? post your resume online...post your resume in jobstreet, jobsdb,hanap-buhay,trabaho.com hmmm...what else? (btw, this goes to jon too)

then...ayan dami mo na picture...print a lot of resumes siguro, make sure na no typo error. tapos, if you're planning to send them through snailmail or deliver them personally to the companies, i suggest that you use a special paper...yung may texture pero wag naman yung skanky paper...kasi my friend did that coz feeling niya the HR people just stack them together and malay mo...mas mapansin niya yung paper mo :)

spag: pasingit lang ako, advise lang from an "ate," coz i think i'm older than u guys coz i'm already 26 years old.

i graduated from DLSU Main and after a few months i took up a masteral degree and graduated last 1997. grabe! ang hirap pala humanap ng job especially kung may masteral kaya payong kapatid...

look for a job first after your graduation kasi medyo mahirap maghanap ng job kung sobra na yung qualification mo. pag may stable job ka na, then u can go ahead with your plans on having a masteral degree. i was lucky lang kasi aside from passing the exam (where i am working now), my Tita is also working here so alam mo na...

kasi when i was looking for a job, nobody would take me in, after my masteral ha, kasi nga naman hindi na qualified yung educational attainment ko doon sa position that i applied for . pero after graduating from college (1994) wala naman akong naging problema looking for a job, actually i got so many offers that i did not choose any coz i chose to study further and hindi rin pala advisable... unless you prefer working overseas....

sa mga nag post dito na graduating, good luck to all of you! at sa mga naghahanap pa rin... sige lang...pasasaan ba at makakahanap din kayo ng trabaho. :girl: :)

well, i just graduated from college last march and right now, i'm enjoying my being a bum. i'm still trying to get some rest from all the hard work i've gone though for the past 17 years of my academic life. nevertheless, u can't blame me if i get anxious about grabbing a decent, nice-paying job every once in a while. i have a degree in psychology and i'm choosing to work in the industry. i can't imagine myself teaching in the academe, nor being a counselor or a clinical psychologist. being aware of the stiff competition happening in our gradually deteriorating industry, who is fast becoming reliable to machines instead of the "conventional" manpower, i'm keeping my fingers crossed that one of these days, i can have that very elusive position in an established company. luckily, 3 companies whom i applied for in our job fair have already given me a call, well, giving me a shot if i can fit in their world. wish me luck!

I went for an interview this afternoon and I just got a job offer, finally! I told them I would think about it for a week. The salary's fine. But we have to remain for 3 yrs or we pay a bond money of 200000 php. I'm still actually waiting for a final interview from another bigger company which pays more and has a two year contract with 100000 bond money. I'm just totally psyched.

And for those who are not yet looking for a job, i suggest you look for one now. The competition is just too stiff. I actually applied in 8 diff companies. I took a test and an interview on almost all of them but they still haven't call me until now. I actually become disinterested when I heard that they pay minimal. So goodluck to all you jobseekers!

to adequately prepare you for job interviews and conquer your fear of *thinking/speaking* on your seat, it's best to network or join a toastmasters club near your home or target place of work...it can also help you in your career once you got a job...

Uyyyy scarrrryyyy!! I just got back from the States after a month long vacation and I'm starting to hunt for jobs now. Actually, CONTINUE my jobhunting's the more appropriate phrase. After i graduated last Feb., I started applying at different companies. I actually got 2 offers from 2 reputable companies but after telling them that I had to go to the U.S., ayaw na nila - immediate hiring daw. Lintek. Now that I'm home, I want to start working na but the competition's too stiff now after the mass graduation last March. Hay nako, do I have reason to really really worry? It's been more than 2 months since I graduated! Feel ko lang super bum na ako!

thanks, novalee but my time off between school and work is actually standard procedure. most financial analyst jobs (and even engineering-type ones) here in the U.S. are usually taken by "batch" or "class". like for financial firm A, the first-year-analyst batch from all schools across the country train together for several weeks, and all these schools have different graduation dates. so to accomodate such constraints, firms start the training of the new batch a few months into summer. it's hard to explain because i don't think there is such a training program in most firms in manila. most jobs for fresh grads in manila are for immediate hire. here top firms have 1 to 3 year programs where they train the analysts and every year they get fresh recruits for their programs from the new college graduates. it goes on like a cycle.

anyways, good luck on your job interviews :)

Hi Dana8! So you accepted na the job at SVI. :) Congrats and Good luck!

Well, I just wld like to gather some info regarding your application at SVI. I received an invitation through email to take their test. But I haven't scheduled it yet (probably next week nalang) coz I'm not really sure if I could take it to be a mainframe programmer at SVI for 3 years (and with that bond of 200K...ooohhh...).

Anyways, there's no harm in trying naman so maybe I would take the test...If I fail, then it's not meant for me...:)

Just like to know:

1. How was the test? What is it like? Do they provide scratch papers or calcu, etc.?

2. How long would one wait for the results?

3. How many interviews before job offer and how long did it take? What type of interview? How long did it ake from date of test to job offer? (Quite curious coz I am also considering Accenture...but I've heard that their recruitment process is quite slow)

4. My course is not really connected to Comp.sci...would that be a disadvantage?

5. Any other details or info wld be highly appreciated. THANKS DANA8!

1. The test was ok, not really hard. They provided scratch papers but no need for a calcu. All the test are timed.

2. They told us to call for the results after three days I think. Then, they would call back to schedule you for an interview.

3. One interview and they offered me the job on the spot. It probably took 30 to 45 mins. It was a panel interview and was composed of three panelist. I've also taken the test in Accenture. I also had my first interview last year. They're hiring process though is quite slow. I didn't had time to wait for my next interview coz SVI gave me one week to decide on accepting the job.

4. It would be an advantage if your course is computer-related but anything's possible if you're willing to learn.

noir, God bless sa interviews! hope you get the job you're looking for! :D

human_vibe, well, at this point i think i'll work hard for myself muna. layo pa ang family :D
i'll satisfy my luho muna... selfish ba?

DaNa8, well i think what's wrong with me is that i haven't made up my mind yet with what i wanted with my life.
i guess i have to know first what i want before i go look for jobs ryt?

leigh, enjoying one's work, that's exactly what i want..who doesn't? everybody's saying you have to enjoy what you're doing, otherwise your life would be a hell 5 days a week.
dont want that to happen with me.......

tigrillo, toastmasters...that's cool...ill check it out

JW55, pba?? ok ah! ako rin kaya :D

novalee, sabi sa kin, accdg. to a survey fresh grads get a job in an average of nine months daw...scary noh??
imagine ourselves being bum for almost a year! balik school na lang kaya ako? :D kunyari college ulit. in that case, uno ko na lahat *****... :D good luck with your interviews!

tr|n|ty, wow! you're very lucky huh! good luck!!

guys, do we, bums, have the right to choose sa jobs ba? or accept ka lang?

btw, i took an exam sa inquirer...gosh ang haba! i was sitting there for 5 hours...i dunno...
actually im not looking forward with it, kse i dont like structured jobs. i mean, with a newspaper, everything will be by the rules... i hate rules. that's why im kind of looking for a job in an advertising agency..sana...
kasi in an ad agency, break all the rules especially in the creatives dept....that's what i want.

there i think i just made up my mind.
creatives in an ad agency.
sana :D

sis spaghetti: I do agree on what you said. Pero I think na everyone has the right to choose whatever job they like. Mahirap kung tanggap ka lang ng tanggap tas saka mo malaman na ayaw mo pala nung job or nung salary.

Anyone here heard of The Associate in Makati. My ate said they're offering huge starting salary. Pls post any info about it and the webpage address. Tnx!

well....
natamad na ako... hehe...
my first 3 days sa job ko was...kind of boring. kasama ko puro arkitekto... wala pang gwapo... :D
anyways, i just kind of feel out of place. ganun pala yun noh? i can't relate to their stories... well siguro i have yet to get acquainted with them...pero ang hirap.
kasi di ba i got used to years of being "popular" (kapal) :D and then here i am in a very strange world... hay naku, i can't even laugh.. i find it hard to be myself in front of these strangers! is that bad???

well, anyway, im on the marketing side... talking to clients. etc. etc.
and honestly, i don't know how to really talk to clients, or future clients for that matter!... pano ba maging pursuasive?
*sigh* miss ko na yung late magising... ganito pala yung feeling noh?

Dana8...good luck sa yo! kwento ka huh? share tayo ng stories...

leigh..any advice??

hello spaghetti! :) hindi pa rin kita namemeet ah :( didn't get to go to the E.K eb eh. hay skanky.

feeling expert ako ah! hehehe

anyway, i'll try to help you with some stuff that happened to me...when i started working mga 11 months ago (lapit na ako mag one year as a working woman! naks!) anyway...puro apprehensions since most of my officemates came from one school...kung tutuusin ako lang yung "others" but eventually, i got to talk with them na rin, minsan you should ask them, kung saan sila maglulunch and stuff like that, usually kasi sa lunch nag-uumpisa yan eh. first 3 days mo pa lang naman eh. am pretty sure you'll get use to it besides you mentioned that you were popular before, sigurado ako na you will get their attention also, di ba?

kung marketing ka...siguro if you have a boss or anybody who has client calls, sama ka minsan, don't interrupt unless super sure ka sa sasabihin mo. Observe first how they do it then eventually ikaw na yung magmemeeting mag-isa. It's fun to be in marketing, kasi you get to meet a lot of people, and i believe you are the friendly type, kaya am sure you'll do well. :) introduce mo rin sila sa PEX hehe malay mo may mga members na pala ng PEX diyan hehe :)

hello dana, musta naman work mo?

hello cookiemonster,

actually i work in PEX, Inc :) hehehe. i started a couple of months ago only and i started working right after college...( but i started in another dotcom) kaya hindi expert hehehe :) the only thing i can share is that i was "lito" also after graduation

anyway,
besides the jobsites ( my first employers found me through the one jobsite eh ), did you subscribe to the different newsletters of the jobsites? :) maybe you have friends who are working in the different companies who can refer you...sometimes it works also :) go to your school career office :) usually graduates don't look for jobs there pero in reality there are a lot of offerings :)

goodluck to you.

thanks leigh for the advice..
you know ***, we'll be going out of town this weekend. :D
i dont wanna go honestly but i think i have to para i could get to know my officemates...
i really wish na it would at least make me feel better sa office....
know ***, everytime i check out the newspapers for construction articles to find some leads, i can't help but to criticize those ads...*sigh*....
but of course, im trying to give it a chance.. i mean you're ryt, its my 4th day... so i have yet to see the real picture...

dami pa akong kwento...

btw, ang bango ng boss ko...

Ako naman kuwento. I started my work just this Monday. Ok naman siya kasi training muna kami for six months. As of now puro lectures pa, as in classroom atmosphere. Masaya kasi parang estudyante pa rin. Tas yung kasama ko parang classmates lang. 12 nga kami sa batch namin. And we all eat lunch together. Parang barkada. Saya.

sis spaghetti: I'm sure you'll get used to your job. It's just a matter of adgusting. Chaka try making PR to your officemates para you'll get to know them better.

This is my first time posting so please bear with me, my apologies if there is any rule or ethical manner I would have broken after this post. As well as spelling, grammar, etc.

After college, my take on it would be to find a job ASAP! Employers (at least here in Hawaii) take into consideration the time that you bum around. A reasonable duration of job hunting would be around a month or so. Three months at the most.

Pagkatapos ng tatlong buwan, iniisip na ng mga employers na batugan ka lang tagala at ayaw maghanap ng trabaho agad. :revomit: Of course if it ever comes to the fact that you really cannot find a job within 3 months. Symepre kailangan mo ipakita sa employer na nagtratry ka talaga maghanap ng work. Again, let me point out na dito yun sa Estados Unidos.

My point being, experience is VERY VERY VERY important in looking for a career! So much so that if anyone actually finds a part time job during college which is related to their current field. I would STRONGLY recommend getting that job (even if you are not getting paid). Go through the pressure of finding a job. Get those adrenaline running! It's easier for companies to hire you when they know that the person they are about to invest in has good roots!
