Bakit ba napakahirap makahanap ng pure development job ngayon? Both of my jobs (before and present) are development support jobs, meaning nag memaintain ng existing system. So puro bug-fixing, enhancement and all that cr*p ang ginagawa ko. No offense sa yun ang mga ginagawa ngayon ha it's just not my type.

Ang prob kasi some companies don't tell this details so I assumed na pure development talaga ang ginagawa ng software engineer position.

There are only about 10% software companies here in the philippines offer pure development. Lawson (the one located in Mckinley) is one.

It's the reality the Philippines is more of a support type industry where India has more development.

Pure development was done before in late 1990's by SVI, CIS but there is no market in long term, losses lang. So they shifted to BPO type which is the trend today.

Is that true? Now I'm officially depressed. I guess I have to be more thorough in searching for these 10% companies, kung di ko man sila mahanap, sana makita ko din sila overseas... :(

well the main thing about development from scratch or ground zero so to speak is that its hard to pass on the bill to clients. Why? Unless its really a small scale project, mauubos lang budget nila sa kakadevelop ng inhouse system when they can pluck it off the market or industry leaders with proven technology, methodology and implementation skillset and experience.

Thats why consulting services is the way things are shifting in terms of IT, from where im looking at, most of the clients here, they only tend to do "pure" development only for small-scale interfaces and stuff like that and that is considering here in the western world.

Granted that in the philippines, since most of the companies dont have a big budget to burn, they tend to develop their system in house but then again if they have something that works, they probably wouldnt even bother hiring an outside company (e.g. accenture, misys, contractual) to come in and improve their processes but rather do it in house.

Basing off your comments, i suppose ure working for a development house rather than at the end client site. If that is the case, you'll probably have to maintain the existing system that your company is marketing since its a proven solution so if you want to go to a more purer development type of role, my suggestion is you could join a client site or go join an project in its infancy stage, im sure maraming ka-maeexperience na user interface and system development life cycle :D

try looking for a job title na application developer rather than test engineer.

like i said previously its very rare that a firm would put a fresh grad or someone with 2-3 yrs of experience on a project na ikaw ang gagawa from scratch and the entire system development life cycle from project planning to feasibility study to business analysis to technical study/review to erd/code designing and then development and support (at least let say start from the development stage) simply because it requires years of experience in order to attain those skills.

The only time that i can see one doing that would be you join a small software development company say with a team of 4 to 5 people and in that scenario, you're not even guaranteed a role that will do the same.

That is why ang common approach ng software development firms is that they put you on enhancements and bug fixing to know the existing system and say once you get the required exposure and experience, they can move you into a more system analyst type of role (which in this case you can start designing your technical framework/architecture as well as the process flow and all, assuming based on the TS comments, this is the role he is eyeing if im not mistaken)

Just be patient, everything will fall into place unless of course yung existing system that you're supporting doesnt have room for growth or you can put in additional modules into it then it might be of a hassle but generally speaking requirements change and there is no such thing as a system that can adapt to changes, you need to continually upgrade / change the system by adding new functionality into it so you could take lead of those changes and how they will integrate into the business flow yeah?

thanks team_slick, you sound really experienced in this field and I'm going to take your words for it. I will try to be patient for now and hopefully things will eventually fall in its right place. Goodluck to me.

yeah i agree with team_slick. it takes more experience to develop your own software. and companies wont take that risks on a programmer with at least 2 year of experience. just be patient and gain more experience and may suggestion is to get trainings that can help boost your skills as a developer and software developer.

hope this could help

yeah have patient and some luck in your career, all of us naman dumaan sa stage na we get frustrated fixing bugs / doing enhancements so to speak.

Pag medyo hasa kana or you gain sufficient experience and skills in either the system or industry ur working on, im sure naman your employer will put on more of a senior role for you wherein you will be ask to come up now with designing and implementing your design so to speak. Medyo mahirap din kasi makipagusap sa mga business or functional guys because you need to map their requirements whether it is technically feasible or not and i hope that someday you'll be able to attain that
