Open Young Minds
A Message from Sharon Davis, First Lady of California:
"Experts have been telling us that the early years of a child's life are vitally important to his or her future development and success. One of the ways we can help prepare our children for success in school and in life is to read aloud to them starting from the time they are infants.
Children become readers when their parents read to them. It really is as simple as that. And here's the good news: It's easy to do and it's great fun.
Reading together provides many benefits to you and your child. It not only helps improve children's language skills and vocabulary, but it expands their world and opens their minds to endless possibilities. Reading together also creates a warm and wonderful bond between parents and their children. There are many ways for you to help children learn to read and to reach their full potential. It's never too late to get started.
Take the challenge now and read to children - you'll find that you will enjoy the experience just as much as they do!"

Parents: A Child's First Teacher
"Your child's early relationships and experiences significantly affect his or her brain development. Everyone who interacts with young children influences their growth and learning.
Reading and talking to babies from birth can help stimulate brain development."
How to Read to Children of All Ages
"Children learn through repetition. Telling the same stories and singing the same songs over and over may seem boring to you, but not to children. When you repeat a story, children are learning about the meaning of words and how words tell a story. The way you read to children makes a difference. Read stories in a way that encourages children to participate. Follow these tips to make reading enjoyable:
Select books that reflect a child's own experiences, such as books about daily life, family members, or animals.
Expose children to books they can touch.
Encourage children to choose the book(s) you read.
Read books that have rhyme, rhythm, or repetition, because the sound of language is especially important to infants who cannot yet focus on pictures.
Use different voices for different characters or emotions.
Ask questions about pictures or characters in the book. Have children describe what they see.
Have children tell you what they think will happen next in the story.

>Discuss each book that you read together.
>Talk with children during mealtimes and throughout the day.
>Tell children stories.
>Let children draw or print.
>Limit television viewing and monitor what your child watches.

What Community Members and Concerned Citizens Can Do
*Support efforts to get more books in the hands and homes of children.
**Volunteer to read with a child for twenty to thirty minutes once each week.
***Help children to get involved with community youth groups, organizations, mentors, libraries, and school clubs.
****Encourage community businesses and nonprofit organizations to support community reading programs.
*****Develop a monthly program at your library, school, or community and invite senior citizens to share their oral histories with children.
Children need YOU to get involved. Reading aloud is just one important activity. Whether you're a parent, a grandparent, an employer, a teacher, a neighbor, or a concerned citizen, you can help to improve a child's reading skills."

this is a nice post.. i totally agree and this is also what i practice with my 2yr old daughter. na-adapt nya na nga yung love for books because i noticed even when i'm doing something else (cooking, cleaning, etc) when she gets tired of playing, i see her inside the bedroom, or somewhere, "reading" her books out loud :D

I read to my 8 month old son everyday, ever since he was a couple of weeks old. These days though he's more interested in chewing the book.

Here's a good school for learning to read.
BEST Child International School in San Juan. Try it.
(02)7247980 / (0917)6109712
My son learned to read simple words in 2 weeks.
Teacher-student ratio is almost 1-2.

Seriously, he prefers musical commercials and his favorite is that Makulay ang buhay kapag may ginisang gulay commercial. It hypnotizes him.

--I was only 5 months preggy when I start reading to my son,and it became our nightly routine and now he's already in first grade and in a first few days in school, his teacher already told me that he's such a good reader,he's also fluent in tagalog and english.
Mahilig kasi ako magbasa eh,kaya na adopt din nila agad, lalo na pagnakikita nilang nagbabasa ako.
