what's with Med skul?
why it is that parents push their kids to med skul?
there are other careers to pursue, but why become a doctor?
i've been bothered for years now because my parents still want me to go to MED, but i just don't see any reason why i should really become a doctor...

i'm in Med coz that's the only profession i ever saw myself in & i want to be the 1st doctor in the family :)
maybe your parents want you to pursue med because it's a highly respected profession & they're thinkin of your future coz that's where the big bucks are
kiddin aside, i'm not studyin to become a doctor just for the money. i honestly want to help people  besides, before you earn that much you have to go through hell! well, maybe that's an exaggeration..but it really isn't gonna be easy. that's why your parents should really leave the decision to you. you aren't gonna get anywhere doin somethin you have no interest in. it'll just be a waste of precious time, money, & effort. i'm lucky coz i wasn't forced. i'm proud to say i did everythin out of my own free will! :D hope they listen to you so things will turn out well ;)

Because doctors are first-class citizens wherever they go. Imagine how the NPA or ASG would treat two prisoners: a doctor and a lawyer. Easy to guess who they're gonna tote long as a "useful" prisoner and who they're gonna bury in the jungle at night, right?

:lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol:

Yup. I'd have to say I agree with the statement that doctors are highly respected and valued everywhere- although there really exists some money hungry ones- but that's out of the topic.
I am required to take a science and technology course because of a DOST scholarship contract I took while I'm in HS- since I'm not a whiz in Math, I looked towards the avenue of the Sciences...I surveyed...and surveyed and somehow came to the conclusion that Medicine will be it.
I want to be a doctor because it is one of the most stable jobs one can find around. Although it is admittedly REALLY hard- the process.
I have just realized why grown ups prod children on to become doctors when they notice a certain degree of mental capability in the child, because Med REALLY requires a good memory. Hunched over a dead cat and trying to memorize all its muscles is not an easy task when you already hate memorizing in Basic Biology-- believe me.
Nevertheless, all will be worth it when you finish, I think (I hope). hehe
Still, if you yourself have no interest or inclination towards the Sciences- let alone Med at that, it is not right for your parents to force you. Telling them so in a heart to heart talk would be beneficial, I think. That is, of course if your parents are the ones who really want only the best for you and listen to reason. hehe

an, if you do not want to be a doctor, tell your parents about it. Medicine is not for everybody, and the 'difficulty' of med school becomes more difficult if your heart is not in it.

Good luck! :)

i totally agree. my entire family (from my relatives on both sides) wanted me to take up med, pero i don't see myself becoming a doctor 10 years or so from now (i don't even know if i'll get through med school). somehow, nadala sa pakiusap...so naging theater student tuloy ako. just explain to them...and hopefully they'll get to see your point.

Hey, if you dont want to do it. Tell your parents about it.
Better to stand for yourself now that regret it when you're 30.

Like kahumbu said, medicine is not for everybody. I'm a med student and believe me it can be extremely tough. Well, not very encouraging but what I'm simply pointing at is that entering medicine is a big commitment which entails a lot of sacrifices.

Well, just my 2 cents. Anyway, good luck in your decision! :)

it can be as a form of humanitarian service, a way to fulfill your self(childhood dream etc...) or is financially rewarding. the most important thing is that you must have heart for it. i admire med students very much. goodluck sa inyo! :)

the only thing i hate about doctors is their large egos. i know lots of em and most of them have huge ones ... sayang :(
anyway i think they have bragging rights :/ oh well..

the main reason why parents wants their children to take up medicine is two: first is they want someone, a family doctor who shall take care of them and their relatives. what's better than having a family doctor who is a relative and would give full attention and care except for the fact of course that its free?!!! second is the prestige and honor that goes into the profession itself. people have the highest regards to doctors especially in our country and their parents are always regarded as heroes having done their part to support their son's/daughther's studies. it brings so much honor to the immediate family that's why you see female physicians who doesn't even want to let go of their family names even if they are already married (e.g. dr. alma santos-rivera; dr. suzie pineda-mercado etc.). about earnings just to give others an idea, it will take at least 10 years after graduating for one to be established. most of them would go it residency program first or what they call as specialist in training (pediatrics, obstetrics, internal medicine, surgery) for the next 3 to 5 years. in here they are earning minimal. if they however decides to go into private practice they need additional funds to set up a clinic and also you may not even have enough patients to cover up for their expenses in the beginning. in conclusion to be a doctor is a real sacrifice you have to study hard, marry late and not to expect money to pour right away after passing the board exams. that's just the start of the real world where parents usually cut your allowances and here you are a doctor but trying your best just to survive! this is temporary though when you're on the top of your career already then regrets if there is, would simply vanish like magic!

med stude here!

actually, sometimes, i compare med to being a priest or a nun, in the sense that it's a vocation. it's really something that needs your undivided attention and effort. just like yung sinabi sa Keeping the FAith, it is a very hard profession/vocation. if you can see yourself happy doing something else go ahead and do it. true, med is full of prestige, etc., but if you don't like it 100% no amount of prestige and honor can make up for true happiness.

i'm glad i was never forced to become a doctor. in truth, i'll be the 1st in my 1st degree family to become a doctor. in fact, both my parents are bankers! weird no?

in addition to the "i want to help the Filipino people" bit (hey, its cliche but true for me...), i wanted to study med for the intellectual challenge too.

bsta an, you really have to want to be a doctor, a lot of what people are saying here is true, about the sacrifices.

actually, pre med pa lang ako, andami ko nang ginawang sacrifice! imagine, i wansn't even in med yet, there were so many things i had to give up (like a girl i really loved and knew there could be some sort of future between us...etc. but anyway, this is another story =) )

maganda naman tlaga doctor eh. such a noble profession. wala ngang pera, dapat main purpose mo is service tlaga.

ako, gusto ko mag medicine kasi i agree with charlies angel's post. sabi niya kasi its the only profession i see myself into. i never saw myself being in business or communication, or arts, or law or kung ano man. doctor lang tlaga kaya ayun, im pursuing my dream. sana makaraos naman. =)

Saka me pagka-slacker kasi ako sa school kaya hindi ako masyado toxic, although I'm changing that now kasi feeling ko ala ako alam sa clerkship. Pasukan na namin today, kainis.

San ka nagme-med? Year?

EverAfter
Jun 4, 2002, 01:23 AM
Yeah, toxic is a universal Med term. Pati UP meron. :glee: I have friends from UST, kasi UST ako nagpre-med and clerks na sila ngayon.

Anong section mo? Di ba ikaw nagaaya mag med mission dati?

sa up, it's 11,789.50 for the freshmen. for the upper class people, it's slightly lower since the freshmen have an "entrance fee"

you must really want to study in med school to stand the constant pressure.

i find myself looking forward to go to school everyday. ayos.

I have a question. Why is it that graduates of science courses in this country would want to enter med school?

Ba't di na lang sila mag masters or mag PhD?

After you earned an MD kasi, ala ka ring kwenta.

After that mag-specialize na sila.

If they're taking courses like MBB or Biology, they opt not to go to Med School. It's a big insult to a Molecular Biologist who are trained to be a productive scientist to get a medical degree just to become a general practitioner.

sprakendoitz
Jun 25, 2002, 09:31 AM
i dont think most college students studying biology really had it planned to work as a biologist, but they use it as a stepping stone to enter medicine. is there life after bs-bio kahit nag MS ka o maski PhD? i think its either maging prof ka o wala kang mapupuntahan... i'm a bs-chem grad from one of the top 3 universities in the phil, but most of my classmates are earning minimum wage as junior chemists in different companies, and those who took their MS degrees still find it hard to get even decent paying jobs... a good portion (like me) decided to proceed to medicine which has much better long term financial prospects.
and the itarmed program is VERY hard to get into...

This is a sign of the sorry state and backwardness of our S&T sector. If the trend continues, pupulutin na talaga tayo sa kangkungan!

Hindi kaya, wala talaga tayong R&D culture.
