Hi! I'm working for a current affairs program on television, and am researching for a story about retrenchment in BPOs/call centers due to the economic crisis that has hit the US -- the prime base of call BPO jobs in the Philippines.

Would you happen to know a person who is about to lose his/her call center job due to retrenchment or company downsizing? In behalf of the Filipino audience, we will appreciate your help. Just PM me if you know any such person.

Thank you and good day! :)

there has been a lot of downsizing these past few weeks...especially US based companies or when US projects are concerned.

I hope someone would also care to write an article regarding numerous labor law violations that is caused by downsizing, cost cutting, and others.Since the sudden boom of this industry just started a few years ago, there is no law that would directly protect employees working in call centers. The agents should be educated regarding their rights,as a non-regular employee, regular employee and a highly tenured one. I've personally witnessed and documented abuses caused by superiors to their subordinates which includes numerous unreported sexual harassment cases,non-regularization despite working for several years and forced overtime without pay.many lawyers hired by these companies twist the facts or find a way to use the labor to work in favor of the company. This is a sensitive issue but I believe needs to be investigated.

Hi Gandalf,

I work for the businees dev group of one of the largets BPO in the country. Sad to say this, but your topic is really not an issue in the industry as growth is projected to soar up this year. Although some (US Clients) may have pulled out from other centers, they are just relocating it to a cheaper center, which means that business is within the industry pa rin. In fact, just last year we participated to over 300 bids. In lay man's term, thats abour 300 companies in the US looking for a BPO in the Philippines.

So i personally think, your topic is weak because, again, as US companies look for cost effective solutions, Philippines is their answer.

Hope this helps.

It would have been best if you came up with the story a few months back, like from July to October last year. I knew people who got retrenched. In our company, they used the term Redundancy for legal reasons. Most of them were happy really to be chosen on the redundancy program. They did not worry not finding work after losing one. Call centers are everywhere! I was the unlucky few who gets to stay.hmp!
