Hi, I was wondering if there are Pexers here who are currently working in Japan. Is it true that in Japan, foreign workers only receive short contractual work and are not given "regular employee" status? :)

Not true. For permanent employees, the probationary period is three months. Of course there are many jobs that are contractual that are renewed periodically.

naging uso na ang temporary work sa Japan
not only for foreigners but for the Japanese as well
I think that the labor market was deregulated which led to Japanese companies opting for temporary workers
see for example:
Japan: Hakenmura, the Temp Workers Village (http://globalvoicesonline.org/2009/01/12/japan-hakenmura-the-temp-workers-village/)
Stability and change in Japanese employment institutions: the case of temporary work (http://www.asienkunde.de/content/zeitschrift_asien/archiv/pdf/shire84.pdf)
Japan's burgeoning class: Working Poor (http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/n/a/2008/10/26/international/i081406D49.DTL)
A key to the growth of the working poor has been the explosion in temporary employment agencies, which allow corporations to take on labor without having to pay benefits — and then unload workers at will.
As part of market reforms, the government made it easier in 2004 for manufacturers to hire such laborers, whose number has since increased 40 percent, hitting 1.33 million in 2007. About 40 percent of temps are aged 25 to 34. (http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/n/a/2008/10/26/international/i081406D49.DTL)
The world has changed, indeed!
With a lot of people in first world countries such as the US (see for example the increasing number of people living in tent cities in the US) and Japan becoming poor.

Medyo curious lang kasi ako if the "regular employee" rule in Japan also applies to foreigners working there. May nakausap kasi ako dating nag japan sabi niya contractual daw sila lagi, 2 years 2years lang in the end bumalik ulit siya sa Pilipinas to look for a stable job.
Can anyone clear me up on this?
