Yeah... Boys Be... is a pretty good anime. The stories are intruiging and the animation and character designs were great. Too bad it only lasted 13 episodes. :(

I also liked Gate Keepers but even that is now finished... 24 episodes all in all I believe.

Well... let's hope AXN shows em again! Heck, I'm sure they will... they replay even the corniest of their bunch (I've had enough of Dual, Oji, and what have you!) :D

Ey! Boys Be was cute. Nakaka-inlove, nakakakilig...although the character designs suffered a bit in some episodes. Ganda pa ng ending...:) Kyoichi and the other Chiharu should've ended up together in my opinion. Ganda ng rapport nila.

I think that Boys Be... was too short... though it ain't so bad that they left things to the imagination... I guess they wanted to show that it's best to make things happen for ourselves rather than relying upon a happily ever after conclusion.

As for Gate Keepers... the ending was great actually... predictable but well done nonetheless... I just wished that they had answered some questions like who was that dark gate keeper that created the invaders... or what is Yukino really? I still can't quite comprehend her power... is she an immortal... a demi-spirit... a time traveler... oh well... I'm hoping for a second season but I don't think it's gonna happen... at least not anytime soon! :(

Tenchi-itis? I think that the Tenchi Muyo series has been milked bone dry of whatever it's worth but I fail to see the relationship to Boys Be... or Gate Keepers for that matter... :confused:

In fact... I find Dual to be more like Tenchi than anything else on AXN... Dual is good, but I've seen it so many times that I'm just tired of it and want to see some new stuff... Boys Be... and Gate Keepers were winners for me, but Shin Hakkenden feels sorta like been there and done that. Oh well... let's just hope that more good things are on their way... ;)

Well... Dual indeed has some uncanny resemblances to Tenchi and Eva though I'd have to say that the overall impact is rather different.

The mechs are similar to Eva I'd have to say and the usual one guy living with several hot women under one roof idea is present as well... but then again... a lot of animes implement this setup... probably since it's the dream of nearly every guy on the freaking planet to have a horde of females all over him! :D

I agree... Shogo Amakusa was alright but failed to show as much depth as Shishio or Enishi. I really was hoping that they'd animate the Jinchu Saga but apparently it doesn't look like it's happening. :(

I'm just missing the last book now in the whole RK series... dang that bloody final book is a b*tch to find! I want to see how the Jinchu Arc ends na! Waaaaah! :(

Mokkori: Most of the seasons after the Kyoto Arc (i.e. Shishio's season) were, quite obviously cheap, cash-ins on RK's phenomenal popularity in Japan. (Who would've imagined Kenshin caught in a feng-shui scandal?!) They had good ideas but they didn't develop them quite well. Sayang yung kay Shogo eh, I thought of some ways to make the whole story more coherent and how to make Shogo more emphatic...

Haven't you guys wondered why they never show the full movement of the Amakakeru Ryu no Hirameki? Is it supposed to be so bloody hidden a secret that viewers aren't supposed to see it in its overhyped regalia?

Go to Comic Alley in Greenhills. They have VCDs that have the 95th episode in it. And no, it's not about Kenshin and Kaoru's wedding.

I'm not sure if it counts or not, but SPE released something known as the Memorial Edition a few months back. Among the other things included in it was a special recap of the entire series. What's really cool about it was that it was told through the perspective of Kenshin and Kaoru, 5 years after the Jinchuu arc. In the conclusion of the special, we see little Kenshin and Kaoru meeting up with little Kenji, in a direct adaptation [sort of] of the last pages of the Rurouni Kenshin manga. Really something.

My guess is that she's some sort of a high-level snow spirit, existing outside of the mortal plane. Think of a cross between Darkness (from Shadow Skill) and Yukime (from Jigoku Sensei Nube).

The Feng-Shui season ended with the 94th episode.

Nothing much happens in the 95th episode. It's just the Kenshingumi couples hanging out.

You know why there isn't a single Shogo Amakusa website there? Because

1. He experienced one of the most humiliating defeat.
2. What bad-assed thing did he do?

Well... I personally really like RK but me thinks that it's been over-rerun already on AXN. I think that they should wait a good while before showing it again after this run.

Personally though... I really prefer the manga to the anime from post-shishio on out. The Jinchu Arc is great in the manga and would look fantabulous on the screen... thing is that I don't think that such a production has been made. (yet?)

Mokkori: Haven't seen much of the RK manga kasi eh, but I agree with RK having been shown too much. I think it's justifiable that AXN showed RK this time around, though, because they didn't use Sony's dubbing anymore and went for subtitling instead.

If you've listened to the dubbing though, you'll notice that they just wrote down what the dubbed voices said, and used that for the subtitling...in effect there's not much difference in the translation apart from hearing the original voices themselves. In other words, they didn't improve on the dodgy translation. Personally I thought Sony's English translation of RK was not perfect...it's quite noticeable to those who know some Japanese.

Sometimes AXN's subtitling even screws up. Minsan mabilis (because of a previous delay), minsan hindi nagpapakita. :(

Well... I wasn't following RK on AXN this time round since I've already seen the whole thing at least three times over... but when I actually did sit down to watch, this was the most noticeable mistranslation that I've seen on the subs:

On the part after Shishio is defeated and Kenshin goes to visit Tomoe's grave. When he returns to meet up with the rest, there is a scene where Kenshin says "Oro" again and everyone makes a big deal out of it... I can't remember what the subs said, but I was sure as hell that it was nowhere near what it should have been! :eek:

Personally, I think that Sony's job in translating the RK series for english dub was rather well done. The voice acting wasn't bad... the translations did make a good attempt at bridging certain cultural language gaps... though there wasn't really anyway to translate "Oro" or "Gozaru" or what have you! :eek:

Perhaps I was nitpicking a bit over Sony's dubbing...it does its job well naman; it's just that the translation wasn't 100% faithful to Japanese text.

The names were first to be victimized..."Cori" is Kaoru and "Yoshi" is Yahiko. Oh well. Can't have it all I guess. I'm just happy to have seen RK even though it's about the 5th time around already...

Oh, by the way, "Rurouni Kenshin" means "Kenshin the Wanderer." :D

tama ka diyan shun, rurouni=ronin which means wanderer...ako naman galit na galit ako sa english dubbing. i feel na binababoy ng mga amerikano ang pagka-japanese ng anime, i mean yung essence ng anime. the characters are supposed to sound cool pero pagdinub nila ang dorky pakinggan ng mga characters. take for example some of the scenes sa rk (the fight scenes to be specific) instead of dubbing it as it is they have to make for it by dubbing it with, "eat this" or "darn it!". im well aware of their limitations due to viewer discretion. kaya nga ***** axn decided to show the english subtitled versions naman...

I myself have my own gripes with poorly dubbed animes. I feel however that the dub of RK was rather well done if not excellent. ;)

Although I myself prefer sub to dub. I also understand that most of the American audiences don't have the patience or the interest in reading subtitles. And this is a fact that most translators are aware of.

If we want anime/manga to propagate. We must understand that dubs are necessary to give it a chance of competing in a western market. Some dubs I agree, are poorly done to the point of being utterly pathetic. But most dubs of late have been rather palatable and as it seems, translators are finally giving more weight to the quality of voice acting as opposed to the "friends of the producers voice actor" system. :eek:

Most people though, don't tend to notice horrible dubs as much as anime fans do. Unlike most of those new to anime, hardcore fans have been lucky enough to have viewed the original Japanese language versions. Thus those who have seen such, have a good point of reference to judge the dub versions. :D

Try to think back... when we were kids, we pretty much thought that the dubs of Voltes V, Daimos, Grendaizer, and what have you, were pretty good. If you'd look back on it now... you'd pretty much notice that a whole lot of lines and phrases can easily make you cringe. :eek:

Oh well... just my observation...

Yeah, Mokkori's right. Some US companies are now realizing the value of quality voice acting, like AD Vision and Manga Video. Sometimes perfection in the dialogue translation itself doesn't matter (in the case of RK, for example)---just getting the major points across while retaining the appropriate mood/atmosphere is enough for many casual anime viewers (e.g. AMERICANS!). The RK voices accomplished this 85% in my opinion; their characterization is still good.

Looking back, I think only the nitpickers and purists will even care about little details. One such detail would be when Kaoru mumbles something about the "Kuzuryusen" when the translation says "Amakakeru Ryu No Hirameki." Maybe dubbers and translators deserve some slack for their efforts, and maybe we should ease off on little translation niggles like that when we understand the overall idea anyway. :)

Sometimes the translation and dubbing can change how an anime gets to people. A prime example would be "Pokemon." (I don't watch this very often, but it's just an example.) The US producers primed the translation and voices to bring out more of the "comedy" angle, as compared to the original.

On the flipside...I give credit to some GMA-dubbed anime because they manage to keep the atmoshpere intact. Bubblegum Crisis: Tokyo 2040 was dubbed fine in my opinion...although they should've left Priss' songs to the subtitlers. One of their worst dubs was Gundam Wing. Wala akong naintindihan. Oh well...I would rather watch Z-Gundam anyway.

Shojou me thinks means "young girls" literally... while Shonen means "young men." ;)

Likewise... Shojou manga/anime are geared towards a female readership/audience. They're mostly comprised of love stories, drama, childrens/cute/kawaii, and the like. Shonen on the other hand, is geared towards a male market as most of the stories circle around genres like sci-fi, action, fighting, mystery, horror, and so on. ;)

If Boys Be... would just be classified as a love story, then I'd say it was Shojou, but the presentation isn't entirely Shojou and it has Shonen elements in it... one being that the whole story is seen from the view point of a main male character. (Most Shojou stories have the female character as the lead and views things from her perspective... though not only Shojou stories have females as the lead.) :eek:

Thing is that there are other Shonen stories with the same ambience as Boys Be... the best example I could think of right now would probably be "I's" by Katsura from Jump Comics... I dunno if that has an anime yet. :confused:

now that i know what those 2 words mean. well, i think that its both coz if youve been watching ALL of the BOYS BE.. episodes you'd notice that they try to keep a balance between the story of the guys and the girls. every other show focuses on the guys and vice versa. but eventhough they had that kind of pattern they stilled maintained the essence of the show which is focused on Kyoichi and Chiharu...

Regarding the animation of RK's Jinchuu arc: I'm still hopeful that it'll come. IIRC the RK fillers, i.e. Shogo Amakusa and Feng Shui series, were put there for a reason: to give time for the completion of the Jinchuu arc animation. I think this Arc is the meat of the whole RK, and it's even where they got the RK OVA's (from the Remembrances Chapters). It'd be a huge disappointment should they opt not to animate it.

And on a related note, since they would be showing the Jinchuu arc after episode 95 *crosses fingers* certainly episode 95 wouldn't show any Kenshin and Kaoru nuptials since they still haven't been married throughout the Jinchuu arc -_-" makes sense, doesn't it? ;)

for some apparent reason late nako nagising kanina, i turned on the tv and was able to watch an episode of BOYS BE.

Today's repeat telecast episode was probably the 6th or 7th episode... there are 13 in all so I'd say that you caught it somewhere in the middle. :|

The schedule for Boys Be on AXN is M-F 6:00 pm with a repeat telecast at 6:30 am and 10:30 am the next day. The friday shows are repeated on Monday instead of Saturday though. :)

I really liked Boys Be... so much. Yumi and Makoto are so cute together. Who would have ever thought that a computer geek-pervert and a simple girl would take to like each other so much. Kenjo and Horikawa are so good together. Both of them like baseball.

That's a major draw to BOYS BE: The characters are so clear and endearing and they're not static. Take Makoto for instance (undoubtedly my favorite because he changed so much). Who woulda thunk he'd end up with Yumi...? :)

Uh, Mouse, I think Kyoichi's other girl was Sayama...Shoko Sayama. Ewan ko lang, pero Shoko and Chiharu look a little alike if you look at them carefully...note their bangs...

As for how the 13-episode first season ended...I just think the relationship between Kyoichi and Chiharu came around full circle. Kyoichi had to wait for Chiharu in the first half of the series because I think she felt she hadn't seen the world---in short she didn't want to limit herself to Kyoichi; she wanted to meet other men. "Collect and select" kumbaga.

By the time the season ended, it was Chiharu's turn to wait for Kyoichi as he met Shoko in school and the blond Chiharu in Hokkaido. I think by the time the 12th episode ended she was sure she wanted Kyoichi as her BF. I don't think Kyoichi really hates Chiharu Nitta---he doesn't really show it, if ever.

Wala lang, that's just how I think. Feel free to disagree with me.

meron na nga rin boys be.. for PS1 tsaka isang musical sa japan! pero compare mo sa series wala connection yun. dun sa game eh date as much girls as possible - part of growing up theme... lalo na yung musical nila, i dont know the story pero there are 4 girls - isa lang ang maganda :p and syempre and setting sa high school pa rin...

Unofficially the rumors say that Chiharu (The Barbarian, not the artist) and her friend with the glasses (still forgets her name) are not gonna be part of the 2nd season.

loved this anime, para shang typical teen flick, but way way better, i have a friend who actually compared it to the likes of g-mik and click, which totally scandalized me... pero siguro in terms of puro teenagers din sila, japan setting nga lang... ok fine, in fairness....


i loved the BG music lagi, it's so sentimental and so nostalgic... pati yung effects nu'ng falling cherry blossoms petals *duh! sobrang hopeless romantic ko talaga!* along with the music... it's so innocently cute... :)

i agree ...medyo deformed nga ang faces nila. but anyway, i think the aesthtic quality of the story beats their physical ugliness (or baka naman their ugliness shows the reality that not all in the tv are beautiful) :uhhuh:

Simple lang siya...di nakakapagod panoorin. At tama si crescent, maganda na nagre-revolve sa mga characters yung series. My favorite episode is the one about Aki and Ueno. :)

Ah yes Mina ga iine... one of my favorite anime songs... My brother and I used to argue which is better Mina ga iine or Kyou Kara Asu e... hehehe I always win 'cause more people like Mina ga iine. Heck Rururu is a hell lot better than Kyou Kara Asu e. Shame that I lost all three of 'em 'cause our eldest brother deliberately deleted my desktop. I should really kick his *** for that since his desktop is hell lot smaller than mine(I also deleted his desktop :D).

Anyway Boys Be IMO is an above average anime... not that great but not shabby. The stories are great since many people can relate to it and the anime's soundtrack is spectacular. Only downfall is the inconsistent animation.

My fav female btw is Sayama and Aki. :D

I like the opening music on the final episode. Anyways, I really like the series. Good animation quality except for the episodes where the animators seem to be on crack. All in all, good anime.

AXN doesn't tire on recycling it's animes.

Well, IMO, it was stupid of Chiharu to go smooching with the other guy in the first place. It was but a normal reaction from Kyoichi. Kahit naman ako siguro. Mawala lang ako sandali para mag-babewatching, este, magtrabaho sa beach eh, pagbalik ko, may iba nang pinapansin yung special someone ko. Anyway, the episode last night cleared things between the two of them. What a way to end a series...a mushy scene with only I'm back and Glad you're back. No crying, no hugging, just a simple, yet meaningful, exchange of an otherwise mechanical conversation (everyone says "Tadaima" (sp?) when coming home and someone replies with "Okairi" (sp?).

And yeah, stupid girl for turning down that guy. Well, we don't know the other side of the coin...baka may iba na pala siya...

Kyoichi can't forgive Nitta which is obvious. thehitman is right. Anyone would react negatively if you see your girl/boyfriend kissing someone else. To prove this, it can be supported by the rapid flashbacks during that time. After that ordeal, Nitta said that she'll wait for him, probably to forgive her.
The ending didn't really say if they're still together. But if the "I'm Back" and "Welcome Back" thing is symbollic, he probably forgave her already. Then again, maybe they'll stay just as friends, which is more probable in real life.

yung interpretation ko nung "i'm back" and "welcome back" thingie eh ready na i-face ni kyoichi yung realities in his life. feeling ko din na ready na nya i-face si chiharu. his trip to hokkaido served as a soul searching kind of thing. noon nya na-realize na dahil sa pagiging heartbroken nya nawala yung spirit nya. it was reflected sa kanyang sketch na although maganda nga, wala namang depth at buhay.

anyway, the blonde chiharu looked really cool. di hamak na mas maganda sya kaysa kay nitta.

hayy... di ko napanuod yung episode kanina. grabe traffic! :disgust:

I love Boys Be. Ever since its debut on WOWOW in 1997. I even have the OST! And I learned how to play Early Summer II, yung isang soundtrack, on the piano, pati na rin yung Winter II. I even used some of the instrumental BGMs during our school's nursing capping and candlelighting ceremonies! Lalo na yung Autumn I.

From the looks of things in this thread, looks like my thoughts are the same: Boys Be is a classic.
