tina11: whoa! second baby na?
i'm on my 32nd week.was recently diagnosed with impaired glucose tolerance so I'm taking insulin shots.
Good luck to all mommies to be. Ako, nag no novena kay St. Raymund Nonato.
BTW, how come they say if the baby is born 7th month ok lang pero pag 8th month mas delikado..

megabyte2217: Well by then your OB may induce you. For both her kids ganun.

Ang pagkaalam ko the window is two weeks. In my case, labor was induced 3 days after my due date.

ganun ba, pag induced ba ng OB , is it 100% na CS na agad, or possible pa din mag normal? Thanks sa mga replies nyo ha!

If it's any consolation my results were higher. Kaya nga pinag insulin ako agad, pero not everyday.
Insulin, according to my doctors and my research do not have any effect on the baby. Yun ang unang concern ko. Mas wary ang doctors to prescribe pills (i think Metformin yung the usual pill). Insulin helps us preegy ladies regulate our blood sugar.
As for insulin shots, I was also very scared at until now I do not inject myself. I go to my MIL (15 min drive), a nurse, but I realize the need to learn on my own. Mas sanay ako sa pag check ng blood sugar ko twice a day using a lancet--which is actually more painful than the insulin shot. Kasi using the lancet blood will come out. Sa insulin shot, walang blood. Mababaw kasi yung needle.
Sana sis madaan sa diet..pero if your docs recommend insulin, go for it. It's for your baby and your health.
If you need an endocrinologist-diabetician, go to mine. Dr. Ricardo E. Fernando. He's lolo na (75 years old na yata) but still sharp..bait pa. He's the pillar of Diabetology in The philippines. Ginoogle ko siya kasi I had doubts nung sinabi nya insulin ako. Mag se second opinion sana ako but i learned na sya ang "Father of Phil. Diabetology" so...I guess he's very good. His clinics are in Capitol and St.Luke's. His son, Dr. Elwyn Fernando is also a diabetologist.

uhmm... ako 40 weeks and 3 or 4 days ata when I had my CS. We opted not to get induced na, and not to wait anymore for another week... kasi polydramnios case ako... and sarado ang cervix ko, and hindi naka-position yung baby...
we felt na inducing would just put stress on the baby and wala naman guarantee na i'd give birth vaginally pa din kasi nga my body was not naturally prepared (ok sana kung dilated man ako, eh wala talaga eh! ni braxton hicks, nde ko alam how it felt, first baby din... the odds were against me kumbaga)
and yun nga, may polyhydramnios/possible GD risk ako...

i'd say sit will be still be safe to wait even after the due date. kasi yung due date either plus (+) or minus (-) 2wks ang expected delivery.

hi sis bostsip! thanks for the recommendation.. unfortunately..dito ako sa dubai..so yun ibang lahi talaga ang doctor ko..
i am really happy kasi the results for my ppbs yesterday is ok na..bumaba na daw yung level...so i need to maintain na lang daw yung diet ko na no rice until i gave birth...
ang kaso naman ngayon i need to gain weight naman daw since yung weight ko nung first check up ko until now is still the same..hindi ba nag g gain weight si baby ko nun??hahaha...gulo no..:)

I think that if you and your OB have agreed on C-section, inducing labor is not necessary. As I have posted previously, labor was induced in my case because I was past the due date and the dilation was just a "dimple". We tried for normal delivery 14 hrs after the induction but I had to have emergency C-section. I developed a fever and the dilation didn't go past 9.5 com for over 4 hrs.

hiyee!
ask ko lang sana how important is a congenital anomaly scan? is it really necessary? im wondering kasi why my OB hasn't asked me to undergo it yet. im on my 29th week now. i forgot naman to mention it to her last saturday when i had my consultation.
i i were to choose one only, a congenital anomaly scan or a 3d4d video package at in my womb? medyo pricey kasi pareho kaya mukhang di ko pwedeng iavail kung yung 2 ang ipapagawa ko.

Its up to you sis kung gusto mo ipa Congenital Anomaly Scan yung baby mo o yung ultrasound lang..Yung CAS kasi, check nya lahat kung ok ang measurement ng bones and kung complete ba parts of the body ng baby, malalaman na rin dun ng gender..Ako kasi, ako yung nagsabi sa OB ko na ipapa CAS ko sya for peace of mind ba.. I had UTI kasi nun before ko malaman na pregnant ako and na inuman ko kasi ng anti biotic,CAS ang pinagawa ko nung 30 weeks ako just to make sure na ok talaga yung baby..Just ask your OB sa next check up mo..:)

that's correct. 8th months din ng pinanganak yung BIL ko, he's having difficulty talking and walking and he's banlag, you'll know when you look at him that something is wrong but he was able to finish college. when he's focused, he's really focused. you can't get his attention even when you say his name out loud. and he somehow remembers all the jeepneys that goes in our area.

i gave birth 40-41 weeks gestation. nitong january 14 lang.
quick question: for those who have already been thru the process of giving birth, how do you guys know when you are already in labor? i'm on my 32nd week na. malapit na din kahit pano.
ako, i based it on the number and length of contractions, and gut feeling (?) somehow you'll know na it's time. kung contractions, it should be every 5 minutes, tapos almost 1 minute long yung contractions and it feels like one hell of a dysmenorrhea mixed with a major LBM kind of pain. I'm not sure with other mommies here, but the breathing method that I read that said to be good in labor didn't work on me. it only made me lightheaded and woke up with a sore dry throat. But talking helps, I talked to the patient beside me and somehow helps me distract with the pain. But when she started sleeping, it annoys the hell in me,I couldn't sleep because of my contractions and there she was snoring! :rotflmao:
But the pain is worth it. As I've said, ako lang ang normal delivery sa mga batchmates ko. ;)

mommies,
pasingit lang im not sure kung dito ko dapat itanong but i couldnt find an appropriate thread.
anyway, my EDD is april holyweek, sabi the bill will be almost doubled kasi daw holiday. my EDD is my 39th week.
sana mapaaga na lang ako ng kahit 1 week sayang din kasi ang matitipid e. ang question ko is there a way para mapaaga ng konti ang panganganak? a nurse friend suggested for me to start walking around my 36th weeks para daw bumaba agad is this true? or my other way ba? thanks thanks

kristin29: personally i would rather know that the baby is all right and that everything is normal inside my womb, rather than have the video lang. the detailed scan kasi measures everything, limbs, head, internal organs, amniotic fluid, placenta position, etc. so mas reassuring malaman na normal lahat, and if meron naman deperensya, at least you can take steps if may solution.

you can start walking, start making love, and start eating spicy food at your 36th week pero walang guarantee that the baby will come out a week early (and malay mo naman, it will come out pala at 40 weeks or more)
and ewan ko pero I love body butters... i don't find them greasy at all kasi it gets absorbed naman sa skin agad... even when I was preggy ha and maiinitin :)

You're welcome. Just pray, don't panic and think of your child. I remember asking the nurse to check if my water bag indeed broke because I felt a tug and a sudden whoosh of liquid. When she confirmed it, I asked if I can talk to my hubby first (he's at work when I was admitted in the hospital) and kung hindi ba matutuyuan yung anak ko sa loob kasi wala pa yung OB ko. I can't share any story regarding the actual delivery, tulog na kasi ako nun. I'm not even sure if I was awake during those times basta paggising ko, tapos na agad. Though it's disappointing na hindi ko man lang nakita yung anak ko pagkalabas na pagkalabas but I'm still thankful kasi safe kami pareho. Good luck sa panganganak mo!

re: linea negra. kababasa ko lang niyan sa 'what to expect' book, ang nakalagay after delivery daw, don't know how long after delivery magfade, pero ako di ko tanda that i had linea negra before. so far on my 22nd week na ako, wala pa ako nakikitang dark line sa center ng abdomen ko.

hi mommies, i just gave birth last thursday, 5th feb. @ 4:58am via emergency c-section. bale 38w5d pa lang ako nun, due kasi sya ng feb.14 and he came`10 days earlier.

pero ok naman yung baby.... iyak yung mommy when she was brought out of the recovery room, apologizing kasi na-CS sya... pero love naman sya ni hubby nya and assured her na ang impt is healthy sila, ok sila...

I'm scheduled for a CS on Feb. 10. Lapit na! :)
Finally the 37th week is at hand! At the rate this pregnancy was going (threatened miscarriage, constant bed rests, amniotic leaking and premature labor), I'm really lucky to make it to the 37th week.
Good luck sa delivery mo! Today na pala yun!

No need to worry. I lost that much weight on my first trimester. I only gained weight on my second trimester. Take note, I only gained a total of 20 lbs during my pregnancy and I had a safe and normal delivery and so is my baby. Basta eat regulary and take those vitamins para healthy kayo pareho ng baby mo. Good luck on your pregnancy!

si baby ba ang not gaining weight or ikaw? makikita sa ultrasound, if you've had the detailed screening if okay naman si baby inside. the size of the baby is measured from head to rump, tapos masasabi nila if normal ang growth relative to your gestational stage. if di ka pa pinapa-ultrasound, i guess you better request for one just to keep you from worrying about baby.
on weight gain, iba-iba naman daw bawat female. if slim at payat ka talaga, e, siyempre hindi katulad ang weight gain mo from bigger body types. look at nicole kidman, parang she never gained weight yet normal at healthy ang baby girl niya. BUT to make sure that baby IS okay, get that ultrasound asap!
i am now on my 24th week and just had the gestational diabetes blood test, yuck ang glucose drink! will know by friday at the latest if normal lahat, but from the urine strip test normal naman ang blood sugar, so hopefull all okay.
my next appointment in march, i have an elective ultrasound to measure amniotic fluid levels kasi i have an history of premature rupture of membranes, so sabi ng ob-gyn, check to keep me safe and worry-free.

watzupwidju: dami kinds of ultrasound to check specifics sa womb, depende sa kung ano ang request ng iyong ob-gyn. sana if worried si ob-gyn, pina-ultrasound ka kaagad niya for growth screening, to say pa sinabi nya na "baka may abnormality". sa blood din may check kaso dapat nung 11-14 weeks ka pa dapat ng ob-gyn pinagawa.
1.) viablity/ first trimester dating; 2.) first trimester screening; 3.) ultrasound scan of nuchal translucency with blood test - eto for down syndrome, trisomy 18 & 13; 4.) detailed scan, eto yung 50-minute procedure for fetal anatomy na lahat ng organs ni baby ni-measure, size niya, amniotic fluid, at saka puwede mo alamin ang gender; and 5.) amniotic fluid index screening, kasi nga may history ako sa naubos ang water ko.
i just wish you well! sana puwede mo utusan si ob-gyn na sapilitan ka pa-ultrasound!

FGR/Girlie..
Hello! Although I am not an expert on this topic since I'm also a first time expectant mom (almost due na!)...I have some experience which you might find useful
1. Find a good OB. Magpa recommend kayo sa friends nyo, mommy. Syempre dapat within a budget.
2. FGR-- depende sa situation but when I was in my first few weeks/months, I was so irritable sa aking hubby. Lagi ko syang pinag-iinitan and I was so weepy and emotional. So, patience lang. Cliche but true--pero hormones lang yan. It would be nice if you could be with her sa lahat ng check ups. Great bonding yun.
3.girlie -- I didn't experience pain in the balakang at 13 weeks...mga latter stage na, but iba-iba naman kasi for each individual. I experienced something worse--spotting and I had several slews of infections. Ask your OB-Gyne what you can do to lessen the discomfort. I think it's because your body is adjusting to the physical/hormonal changes

Bostsip, maybe I'll just consult this with my OB. next 2wks pa kasi yung appointment ko with her.
Nagkaroon ako ng UTI nung naging preggy ako which is common to pregnant women. Other than that ok naman ang result ng mga lab tests ko (CBC, Rubella, etc).
Thanks for the advice.

^ hi tanyeen!
it was like that for me during my first pregnancy. i had my trans-v but no baby could be found. there was the sac (bahay-bata) but no embryo. i was on my 5th week then.
my ob recommended to repeat the ultrasound 2 weeks after. on the 7th week, we did the trans-v again, and ayun, nakita na si baby, pati na rin heartbeat. the trans-v ultrasound is mandatory kasi it will determine if the pregnancy is viable.. or if naka-kapit ng maigi si baby... or nakapwesto ng tama si baby (not ectopic), etc etc.
it might be too early at this point. what did your OB tell you? did she/he recommend to repeat the u/s?
good luck, sis! it will work out ok. it might be na talagang too early pa at this stage.

breastfeed on demand for however long your baby wants to.
This will ensure that you will have supply.
Depending on the baby, you might feel like you're breastfeeding all day. Ganyan talaga. Tiyagaan lang.

for moonstruck: i breasfed-on-demand my firstborn and i will never do it again this second time. you will feel exhausted, frustrated and drained. i have given it much thought and personal research - based on what i observed at the orphanage i visited, the infants (and all children there as well) had a schedule/routine. they seemed calmer, easier to handle and sleep through the night as well.
my plan is to breastfeed every 2 hours for the first month, then every 3 hours on the second month, and see how from there. BUT never on demand because from experience, like my firstborn, it seemed he breastfed the whole day non-stop! wala na ako nagawa kundi karga, higa at padede.
play it by ear and follow your own instincts and your baby's. if it feels okay for you to feed-on-demand, then do so, but also remember that it is okay to make a schedule and be flexible as your baby grows older.
nga pala ang ininum ko nun ay malunggay capsules/ natalac, 2x a day. it worked for me and i had a lot of breastmilk. i breastfed my firstborn until he was almost 3 years old - from Sept 2000 to May 2003. this second baby will also be breastfed until he goes to preschool.

Scheduled feedings are different from routine feedings. If you follow your baby's cues, you will eventually find that your baby follows a routine.
La Leche League International and all other breastfeeding experts do not endorse scheduled feedings. During the first weeks, it is important to bf on demand because this is where supply is established. Prolactin receptors are made during this time.
Sometimes the baby goes through growth spurts which is why the baby nurses more than they usually do. Minsan naman there are babies that are slow feeders or inefficient feeders.
Are the children at the orphanage breastfed?
Formula takes longer to digest and therefore it is easier to schedule feedings with formula fed babies. Mas matagal naiiwan sa stomach ng babies ang formula so it gives them a feeling of fullness for a much longer period of time than babies who get breastmilk.

sneezy: from experience, i would rather not bf-on-demand, but hey, as i said before, follow your own instincts and personal gut feel. i have a friend who has breastfed (and still is - July 2007 until now) her baby from birth with the 2-hour first month and 3-hour second month and they are doing great. she says she has never felt stressed with this way of bf. i will try her method for a change. she also has not taken any milk suppliments, but still has regular supply of milk. i guess it is really true that one woman is different from the other and all experiences with pregnanacy and breastfeeding are not the same for all. i only hope her method works for me too, as i really need order in my life - with an older child to look after and with no househelp or yaya around. wish me luck!

Moonstruck, here are a few links that you might want to read,
AAP ADDRESSES SCHEDULED FEEDINGS VS. DEMAND FEEDINGS (http://www.ezzo.info/Aney/aapmediaalert.pdf)
Policy statement of the American Academy of Pediatrics on Breastfeeding and Use of Human Milk (http://aappolicy.aappublications.org/cgi/content/full/pediatrics;115/2/496)
During the early weeks of breastfeeding, mothers should be encouraged to have 8 to 12 feedings at the breast every 24 hours, offering the breast whenever the infant shows early signs of hunger such as increased alertness, physical activity, mouthing, or rooting.170
Crying is a late indicator of hunger.171 Appropriate initiation of breastfeeding is facilitated by continuous rooming-in throughout the day and night.172 The mother should offer both breasts at each feeding for as long a period as the infant remains at the breast.173 At each feed the first breast offered should be alternated so that both breasts receive equal stimulation and draining. In the early weeks after birth, nondemanding infants should be aroused to feed if 4 hours have elapsed since the beginning of the last feeding.

nga pala ang ininum ko nun ay malunggay capsules/ natalac, 2x a day. it worked for me and i had a lot of breastmilk. i breastfed my firstborn until he was almost 3 years old - from Sept 2000 to May 2003. this second baby will also be breastfed until he goes to preschool.
natalac is what my OB prescribed as well. i think i'd try breastfeeding on demand at first too. although supposedly it's should be every 2 hours di ba? every 4 hours naman pag formula.

what about breastfeeding and formula feeding at the same time? is that gonna be ok. i hope to go back to work eh. although i can be able pump milk at work and breastfeed once at home, i won't feel so secure that she/he will just get it all from me. i know i'm not so self conscious when it comes to what i eat, drink or do to myself so i will worry that i'm gonna pass on something worse.

There are very few dietary restrictions naman when it comes to breastfeeding (actually, wala akong maisip na restrictions). Unless na lang your baby shows sensitivity to certain foods in your diet then you can take it out and gradually reintroduce it when the baby is older.
I'm not a working mom so I can't relate much to pumping while at work but I have a few working mom friends who have successfully given their baby breastmilk up to a year or older (of course the babies had solids sometime after their 6th month). The common denominator naman sa kanila is that they had a good pump and matiyaga talaga sila to pump at work.

i breastfeed on demand, especially the first two months, but i am now back at work. i pump everyday, every two-three hours (need to up my supply since his appetite is growing din). i use lang a manual pump (just pumped 7oz over lunch). but i am able to provide for all feedings. :D
my baby stays home with his nanny, and is given breastmilk (mine!) on demand. usually every three or four hours depending on how much he finishes. he is two months old and can finish 5oz na in one feeding (sometimes even more, so yes, he is king of spit-ups, hehe). we went to the pedia saturday, and he is now 5.9kgs. grabe.
hindi naman ako napapagod. :D anything for baby, i guess. pumapayat pa ako so yey. hehehehe.

Madami palang malapit na ang D-day... good luck to everyone, post kayo uli dito about your experiences after the delivery ha :)
Medyo late na ako to the demand/scheduled feeding discussion but here is my two centavos :D
I completely understand the convenience that scheduled feeding offers since I don't have a nanny or helper either and for most of the day I'm alone with an active, clingy 3-year-old and a 3-week-old with a voracious appetite. Some parenting books such as Baby Whisperer insist that babies do not need to eat more frequently than every 2.5 or 3 hours, depending on their birth weight, and only every 4 hours by the time they are 4 months old. But in the end I chose to feed on demand because of two reasons:
1 - I'm an adult and my appetite fluctuates from day to day. Paano pa kaya ang baby. Babies go through growth spurts, so they may be hungrier on some days than others. It's highly possible that a 5-week-old does well on a 3-hour schedule, but goes through a growth spurt at 6 weeks and needs to feed more frequently. I want to feed my child based on her hunger, not based on the clock.
2 - this may sound very crunchy but I truly believe that nursing is so much more than providing nutrition. For a nursing baby, the breast is the ultimate comfort and expression of love. Of course when a baby is crying and has just fed, the mom should check the diaper or other possible sources of discomfort first before offering the breast.
Of course I started working at home when my first child was 3 months old, and was too lazy to pump so my daughter got formula when I wasn't available to feed her. I do believe that a baby needs a happy, fulfilled mom more than a mom who exclusively breastfeeds on demand but is resentful and short-tempered, so the mom should do what feels right for her.

Li'l Sistah how do you do manual pump? i don't even know how to handle the breasts. a bit ignorant and it's gonna be my first time eh. i've read a lot about it but it's still different when you will have to do it already. :)
tina11 i believe you are right in saying so. if that's the case, i'd just go where my convictions are. i think breast together with formula feeding will work for me. thanks.

MoonStruck just make sure to delay bottle feeding as long as possible to establish your milk supply and avoid nipple confusion. I'd recommend introducing the bottle at 6-7 weeks if you're going back to work at 2 months :)

MoonStruck... breastfeeding, and breastfeeding exclusively, is a commitment you make... it's not always going to be easy (although the right information and attitude and support system helps) but it is a very worthwhile thing to do, not just for the baby, but also for you...
aside from mas mabilis ang weight loss mo if you breastfeed (lalo na sa first 6 months), iwas cancer din sya... for you and the baby...
so do think about it... and arm yourself with the correct information :)

hmm..., that sounds good DELISYUS . What about the idea that smarter and tougher babies come from formula feed ones? Is that even true? I just noticed that most of the people amongst the intelligentsia crowd are formula fed? I dunno. Just wondering.
Additional question, will the baby still become breeched if she/ he was already seen in normal position at about 20wks? I did not do another ultrasound but I have the paranoia that my baby seemed to have moved to a breeched position. I'm at 38 weeks now, my OB always says it seems like the head is down below but there are moments when I would think that I felt the baby's head below the breasts? Weird or maybe I'm just crazy. ;)

Feb 25, 2009, 11:51 AM
^maybe it's because they come from families who can actually afford to buy formula and chances are, they are able to afford to send them to good private schools too?
Personally, I think there are way too many factors other than milk that dictate how smart a child is going to be.
DELISYUS
Feb 25, 2009, 01:25 PM
Moonstruck... actually, what I hear is that breastfed babies are the smarter ones :) but just like what sneezy said, there are far too many factors affecting IQ points :) even a baby who is breastfed but is exposed to the bad things will end up sickly... but then again, that's all the more reason for say, slum dwellers and poor people to breastfeed, so they can pass their antibodies to their kids...
anyway, drsears.com or kellymom.com should provide you all the breastfeeding info you need... :)
and with regards to breech... a lot of surprises happen even at the last minute so worrying won't really help you :) 'normally-position' babies can suddenly go breech or transverse (?) during labor and vice versa... you and your OB will just have to do the best you can with the things you CAN control, and deal with the surprises accordingly :)

Feb 25, 2009, 04:31 PM
By intelligentsia crowd do you mean people our age (late 20s - early 30s)? We were born at a time when formula use was promoted heavily so women could go to work, and research on the benefits of breastfeeding wasn't as complete yet. So most 70s and 80s kids grew up on formula and there are a lot of smart people who were never breastfed. But I don't really think about the "smartness" benefit when I breastfeed - like the previous posters say there are a lot of factors that determine a person's intelligence and success in life. I breastfeed because it feels natural and is better for the baby's health, and after the first few difficult weeks, it's a breeze :)

hello nishi,
when i was pregnant with my baby yanna, kumakain naman ako ng tilapia and steamed lapu-lapu, though not often as i want too,
kasi sabi ng OB ko wag daw masyado, mas ok daw blue marlin put a little kalamansi juice and a butter kasi mas ok daw sya, wag lang fried, grilled mas ok...*okay*

According to the americanpregnancy.org,
marlin has a very high mercury content and should be avoided when pregnant.

Ang pagkakaalam ko din, lapu-lapu is a grouper fish and is categorized in the same level as marlin so avoid din during pregnancy.

iyah... how often do you eat shrimp? actually, even if you're not allergic to them before, you should consider not eating a lot of them, or not eating them all the time, while preggy... just in case you eat something not so fresh and get an allergic reaction from them
same thing w/ squid and the like...
generally...just eat healthy foods in the right doses... unless you have dietary concerns...wala naman talagang bawal na sobrang makakasama... pero iwasan yung pwedeng maka-irritate sayo (like sweets) or mag-trigger ng kung anong reaction (like kilawin)
iyah_82

DELISYUS: thrice a month ako kumakain ng shrimp so far wala naman allergic reaction. I usually eat sweets like cake, ice cream and chocolate. I dont eat veggies ever since i was a child siguro kalabasa, potato and carrots only.
Though i am worried about my baby baka mag mana sa akin yung pagka maselan sa food even milk ngayon hindi ako umiinom compared before di pa ako buntis lagi ako may fresh milk.

hi mommies,
what do you think about a pregnant lady living with 3 smokers?
you see, i just came home from abroad and currently living with my dad and 2 older brothers. i pretty much lived in a smoke-free house until my 30th week. that was when i moved back in my old house.
they don't smoke around me or i stay away from them whenever they do. but of course, i sometimes get a whiff of their second hand smoke. i usually hang out in my brother's room too because he has internet there. he's not around when im there but his room smells like smoke. and sometimes when i go to the loo after they do, i smell smoke too.
is this okay...well, i know it's not but how bad is it?
i want to move out of the house because i have my own family now but my dad insists that i stay here since im still pregnant and he wants me not to be alone whenever my hubby goes to work.
what do you guys think? should i move out because of this? nakakapanghinayang din ang rent money =/

Yes, if it were me, I'd move out.
Re: rent money. I don't think you can put a dollar value to the overall health of your child.
Household Dust, Surfaces Trap Cigarette Smoke
Hidden Sources of Secondhand Smoke May Put Children at Risk (http://www.webmd.com/smoking-cessation/news/20040223/household-dust-surfaces-trap-cigarette-smoke?z=1728_00000_1000_nb_04)
Smokers who attempt to reduce the risks that cigarette smoke poses to their children by smoking in a different room, when others aren't home, or outdoors may not be fully protecting their family.
A new study shows household dust and surfaces can trap cigarette smoke and its toxic byproducts and serve as major sources of secondhand smoke exposure for infants and children.
New Study: Children Exposed to Harmful Smoking Residue Even When Smoking Outside (http://www.no-smoking.org/march04/03-09-04-2.html)
Nicotine, Secondhand Smoke and Infants (http://faculty.washington.edu/chudler/shs.html)
A New Cigarette Hazard: ‘Third-Hand Smoke’ (http://www.nytimes.com/2009/01/03/health/research/03smoke.html?em)
Parents who smoke often open a window or turn on a fan to clear the air for their children, but experts now have identified a related threat to children’s health that isn’t as easy to get rid of: third-hand smoke.
That’s the term being used to describe the invisible yet toxic brew of gases and particles clinging to smokers’ hair and clothing, not to mention cushions and carpeting, that lingers long after second-hand smoke has cleared from a room. The residue includes heavy metals, carcinogens and even radioactive materials that young children can get on their hands and ingest, especially if they’re crawling or playing on the floor.
My mom was a smoker for over 40 years and when my son was born I really had to make a choice. She did not get to see my son until she quit smoking (a year later after my son was born).
Even if she were to smoke outside, the chemicals will remain in her hair, clothes, skin, nails. It is just not a risk that I would subject my son to.

Any one dealt with a Subchorionic Hemorrhage at 7 weeks pregnant with *NO* bleeding???

nung first trimester ko, Folart (folic acid) and Natalwiz (vitamins and minerals) yung pinatake sa akin. Ngayong 4 mths na, Natalwiz, Caltrate Plus (calcium) and Hemarate (iron) ang pinapatake sa akin. btw, bananas help me against constipation. sabi nakakapagpatigas daw ng jebs ang saging pero for me i get constipated pag wala ako intake ng bananas... :)
this is my first pregnancy so i have close to zero knowledge about the whole thing. thank goodness there's pex and the internet :D

According to my OB, bawal sa preggies ang me caffeine content like softdrinks and iced tea.

i stopped drinking teas and coffees before got pregnant up to early second trimester. then at 24 weeks got diagnosed with gestational diabetes, so met up with a dietician. the dietician said that tea and coffee is okay, as long as maximum of 2 cups a day lang daw...tapos no added sugar and creams of any kind, diluted din daw. equal lang daw puwede sweetener, maximum of 1 sachet for the entire day. the store-bought and bottled iced teas and coffees are no-nos. softdrinks/ colas are also not allowed, kaso ang coke zero puwede daw once in a while...alam ko din sa first trimester nakaka-affect sa calcium absorption ang caffeine. i am not drinking coffee and colas, ang tea, mga once a week pa lang, kaso di enjoy walang lasa...

Q: Any of you guys know any practical ways to induce labor? I may be paranoid but I definitely don't wanna go thru the ceasarian section. You see, there is this nasty rumor about certain doctors who would encourage pregnant women for CS even if it is not necessary to do so because they get paid more by the employees health care. Sadly, that has been the plight of most of my co workers.
Although there is a plus or minus two weeks rule to the supposed due date (mine will be by the end of this week), my OB had already advised that I should be admitted after 7 days from the ultrasound's due date possibly for CS. Ofcourse, I will never want my baby to get sick for being inside the womb too long but there should atleast be a check up or so prior to deciding the possibility of CS birth right? In fact, my baby is just quite fine (as per the ultrasound) and is not that big as compared to other pregnant women's babies. I even heard of some ladies stretching pregnancy to 10 months with the baby still ok.
Help please.

hi mommies...
ano tine-take niyo na pre-natal vitamins? (brand)
*** prinescribe kasi sakin iron, folic acid, b complex and vit. c. e masama ang tama sakin nung iron. kahit before pa ako ma-preggy, kaya nag-stop ako mag-take nun. masakit sa tiyan and tumindi *** nausea ko...
Hi! When I was pregnant, my first ob (from Makati Med, first and second trimes) prescribed Trev-Iron coz you'll need all the iron when you give birth and Natalwiz but when I changed my ob (from Borough in Eastwood, during the last trime) she just said that Natalwiz is fine. I tried drinking Anmum but I didn't consume the first box I bought because I had palpitations after drinking so I was advised by my ob to take regular milk (fresh milk and yogurt) instead. :)

you can eat papaya, prunes, oats, raisins and camote.... and avoid starchy foods like potato naman... or you can text your OB and ask if you can take Senokot (OTC na safe for preggos and bfeeding moms) to help with the constipation...
roemar8
occasional iced teas are ok, but know that probably has less tea and more sugar in it... and generally, pregnant women are discouraged from drinking softdrinks and instant juices and juice concentrates because of the sugar content... pregnant women are at high risk of developing diabetes (referred to as gestational diabetes)... and yun nga, caffeine in teas and coffee aren't really GOOD for pregnant women
Moonstruck
sis, the usual things that you can do that won't exactly harm your baby is to walk a lot... to make love... and to eat spicy foods (in the US, they also get preggos to take some castor oil I think)... but no guarantees.... and feel empowered to insist on an ultrasound/check up before making any CS decisions... based from what you said, your OB (like mine) is actually willing to wait for the 41st week, and by then she can probably induce your labor (but if your body isn't primed nga for it, the chances ARE high that it will result in a CS)... I guess you also have to understand where they're coming from, they want to err on the side of caution and ensure that both you and the baby are ok, rather than tempt fate and hope for the best... and 40 weeks of normal gestation IS 10 months (4 weeks to a month, it just so happened that we have months with extra 2-3 days) kaya anything exceeding that IS a cause for concern :)

My mom was a smoker for over 40 years and when my son was born I really had to make a choice. She did not get to see my son until she quit smoking (a year later after my son was born).
Even if she were to smoke outside, the chemicals will remain in her hair, clothes, skin, nails. It is just not a risk that I would subject my son to.
thanks for the reply sneezy! i read kase in "What to Expect On the First Year" na it doesn't matter if the smoker steps outside the house to smoke. The amount of exposure to smoke daw kase of the baby depends on the number of smokers in the house so na alarm ako. Imagine, 3 smokers.
Anyway, I know what you mean about not putting a price to the baby's heealth. I'm jobless and since my husband and I just relocated here in Manila, kakastart lang din nya sa work. And the rent money will probably be half of his income. What about the other expenses?
My savings will also be spent on buying a car and hospital bills. So you see why i'm hesitant din to live out. Kahit kaya naman, sayang din yung savings.

Feeling ko nga i wasn't taking enough kase my sister-in-law had 5 kinds of pills tapos ako, isa lang tinetake.

constipation!!!! eto ang biggest problem ko. i already had bowel problems before pregnancy and it got worse pa! anyway, try Agiolax. It's a laxative pero hindi siya drug. It's natural. Made from psyllium husks at kung anu-ano pa kaya pwede to for pregnant women and bedridden patients.
roemar08:
pwede naman mag coffee at iced tea basta huwag lang lagi. ang alam ko kase, too much caffeine will increase the heartrate of the baby. well personally, i drink coffee siguro once a week. my midwife said na yung mga bawal kainin, pwede naman talaga basta wag madalas.(minsan i eat sushi pa..i know...im bad) nabasa ko somewhere na a pregnant woman should drink no more than 3 cups of coffee a day.

I think it is quite strange for your OB to suggest a c-section agad if you go past 40 weeks. Did she not even suggest an induction?
Most doctors here in the US will induce between the 41st and 42nd week assuming everything is fine.
I have a couple of friends who delivered very close to their 42nd week.
Natural methods of induction would include sex, nipple stimulation and castor oil.
How far along are you? How's your cervix and which station na ang head ng baby?

I think it's fine if you're not drinking anmum. I think they want to market it nga as an alternative to prenatal vitamins kase I was reading their mother's book and it said there... "should I take other vitamins together with Anmum?" Their answer is, go and check with your doctor kase Anmum pretty much has the same vitamins and minerals that prenatal vitamins have. I don't agree though kase I always check the label. Meron silang mga minerals na kulang or medyo mababa. If your concern naman is getting fat, depende rin siguro yan sa metabolism mo. Ako kase lamon ng lamon. As in 4 krispy kreme donuts in one sitting, pero I weigh 169lbs and am 33-34 weeks preggy. =)

milk alternative: for those who are not milk drinkers like me, why not try soy milk? ofcourse dapat may calcium supplement din. para lang liquid taho ang soy milk, kaso dapat reduce the sugar content, so read the label din if tetrapack, and if fresh soymilk naman don't add too much syrup.

Just want to share that I gave birth last March 4, 2009. I was on my 38th week. I didn't expect that I'd give birth then. Akala ko aabot pa ako ng 40 weeks. Anyway, what happened was I had my check up, and my OB scheduled me for a non stress test and Biophysical Ultrasound since I'm considered High-risk (I was diagnosed with GDM)
My BPS was ok pero my non stress test showed that I was having regular contractions (every 5 mins). So, the residents called my OB to ask if i'd be admitted...and after a few hours my OB gave the go signal since medyo nag increase yung cervix ko from 1cm to 1.5 cm.
I thought papauwiin din ako the next day, but that night my contractions were getting more intense and super painful. Then, i had a bloody show and my water broke. Pero di pa ako nagpatawag ng doctor..akala ko wala lang..and I wanted to see how much pain I can endure..hehe
Nung di ko na kaya yung pain, I called the doctor (around 6AM na yun) and pag IE sa akin 5cm na pala ako! So, I was taken to the Labor room, and in a span of a few hours I was given epidural, tapos 9cm na ako...then delivery...and bilis
And to think out patient lang dapat ako
So...I'm now a happy mom to a beautiful baby girl :)

My OB is Dra. Marinette Sto. Domingo. Sa Makati Med ako nagpapacheck-up but she has a clinic both in Makati Med and Asian Hospital. I asked her the rate, for normal - 90k while 120k for CS (all-in). Depende rin kasi yun sa OB mo. According to her, almost the same lang daw ang rates ng Mkt Med and ASian Hospital.

and if may TRUE emergency, you should head to the ER first and consult (or the hospital's nurses/doctors will) with your main doctor there...
i mean... i think it's why a lot of doctors don't like giving away their cell numbers din... kasi some people naman, lalo na paranoid preggos, keep on texting and calling... syempre nga naman, if you have so many concerns, go for a consultation, diba? :)
and I know you don't have plans naman on just texting a doctor pag madaling araw... but I felt I had to say something lang din lest others are reading this too... plus, it's always good courtesy to text, to ask if it's a good time to call.... and a doctor's competency shouldn't be dictated at all by his being ok with texting in the wee hours of the morn...
I know most patients also feel that their doctor MUST know their history etc... but the things is, unless it's a unique case, chances are, they'd need their charts to best advice us... so when we do contact them, we have to be as specific as possible :)

try to have the crackers beside your bed... a trick that works for some daw is... when she wakes up, she'd just lie in bed for a while and then eat a small amount of crackers and then lie in bed for a while... tsaka pa lang sya babangon...
tapos... maybe you can give her a lot of broths (kahit broth from boiled veggies) like tinola... wag sopas kasi creamy yun...
and then maybe you can also let her sniff some mint (like aromatherapy ng eucalyptus or just some Vicks on her nose) to help with the nausea :) good luck!!!
sabi nung staunch breastfeeding advocate I met... we don't really need to drink milk if we're eating right :) for example, there are a lot of veggies that are RICH in calcium (and of course, vitamins and minerals) that we can take and would be a lot healthier actually than powdered milk...
but if you're not into eating fruits and veggies... then drink milk... unless you have special requirements, even Nido or fresh cow's milk will do...

^^^ I'm 7 months pregnant too and I find it more convenient to drive than walk and commute. Just adjust your seat, make sure relaxed yung back mo and syempre drive with extra extra care.
my cousin din, she drove while pregnant. If im not mistaken til 9th month :)

Ganoon din sa Sweden. The midwife (women only see an OB kung may problema sa pregnancy) told me I can take a multi-vitamin if I want to, but if I eat well it shouldn't be necessary daw. I still took one for my peace of mind.

ganon din ang sabi sa akin dito. Pero I took one anyway.
When I was seeing a doctor I just asked her to prescribe a prenatal vitamin for me and I just got it monthly from the pharmacy.
Ngayon naman, I just get it from the health foods section of the local grocery. Marami namang brands ng prenatal vitamins so I just got one that I felt I liked.
jerry's girl, congrats! :)

Hello Mommies! Pasali din ako, i used to read replies here nakakatuwa it helps a lot especially wala naman akong kausapin dito sa house bukod sa husband ko.
Im 25 weeks pregnant, our first baby and im here in Saudi right now.
Anyone here in saudi ba? Compared sa atin, mas mahirap dito kasi almost lahat ng gusto kong kainin nasa atin and solo flight kaming magasawa pero its worth it naman.
To ayaka, dito wala ding vitamins prescribed, its given daw kung necessary lang unlike sa atin na ang dami pinapainom. BUt i took vitamins for a month nung magbakasyon ako sa atin last christmas. I eat more fruits each day nalang, i dont feel anything wrong naman the baby is healthy.
im just wondering kung anyone experience yung everytime na tutulog me on my left side i always felt the baby moving. My baby kicks me, nasasaktan kaya ang baby pag ganun ang position?
Pasensya na po medyo napahaba...Thank you and nice meeting to all mommies here.

congrats to jerry's girl and potchie! =)
hi prettyw!tch,
i feel for you. i spent 7 months of my pregnancy in abu dhabi. it was horrible kase i wasn't able to eat the food i craved for. i also didn't have a nanny kaya my husband cooked most of time. i also worked for a couple months while preggy. pero kaya yan! =) as long as hubby's supportive and maalaga, things will be a lot easier to bear. as for vitamins, i was able to see my company's OB and she recommended Materna by Wyeth.
Now i know why they don't have Anmum in UAE. Kung vitamins nga optional lang sa kanila, malamang milk for pregnant women, di rin ganun ka popular sa ME. napagod na ako sa kakahanap.

Mar 28, 2009, 03:42 PM
I am going on my 8th month na sa april and due to give birth in May.
prettyw!tch
Mar 28, 2009, 06:25 PM
Thanks sis CrazyBoutShady and Larlaanne!
It feels good to know that someone is experiencing the same thing and assures that everything will be okay.Im due on June and will be giving birth here in Saudi. My concern never ends hehehe as to how to handle our baby the first time alone with hubby.
Walang annum nga dito sa ME, i just brought one when we took a vacation last december. When I had my check up sa atin, my OB told me the reason why there's no vitamins prescribed usually on other countries is because on established balance diet. Kaya more fruits and veggies na lang tayo while here in ME.
Goodluck sis Larlaanne, lapit na pala due mo. Hope everything will be okay. Ano ba mas madalas pag nanganak dito normal or CS? Just wondering. Thanks.

hi larlaane! ilang weeks lang pala pagitan naten. buti ka pa nga covered ng insurance. i was an FA kase and we don't have maternity benefits kaya sobrang bigat sa bulsa ang check up. i found this public maternity hospital. maganda naman ang service at facilities nila doon, kaya lang biglang nagtaasan yung prices. yung normal deliver, before 1000AED biglang naging 6000AED... blood tests from 50 naging 150; ultrasound from 80 to 300 kaya yung mga pinay nurses dun nagrerecommend na lumipat nalang sa private hospital. eh timing naman na uuwi na ako ng pinas kase nag resign na ako from work. im due this april naman. =) im on my 35-36th week. it's a good thing that you have another set of helping hands. sobrang hirap pag 3rd trimester. first pregnancy ko pa naman.
prettyw!tch,
sunod sunod pala tayo. april may and june. anyway, i salute you guys for being strong and brave. hirap mag raise ng kids overseas. lalo na sa ME, hirap maghanap ng pork lumpiang shanghai pag nagcrave ka! hehe

hi!im 8mos. preggy and i sleep on my left side coz i heard na it's so much better for our babies pag nasa left side tyo mag-sleep kesa sa right coz it improves the flow of blood and nutrients to the placenta and it helps your kidneys daw to eliminate waste products and fluids from your body which in turn, reduces swelling in your ankles, feet, and hands.
also try din avoiding sleeping on your back 'coz it puts you at risk for backaches and hemorrhoids, inefficient digestion, and impaired breathing and circulation.personally sleeping on my left side is more comfy for me than lying on my back.but then if you feel **** that baby kicks more pag you're on ur left, try to look for a more comfy position.hope this helps!:)

Thanks again! Goodluck on your baby! Is it your first baby?
HI Jersey Girl, If your not comfortable with it you can cancel your travel plans anyway youll be back sa atin by August :) Konting hintay lang. I was told by my OB to cancel then my vacation till i finished my first trimester, its critical daw especially i had a miscarriage before. Its better to be safe than sorry :) And one thing di na ganun hirap magtravel kasi di na masyado ang morning sickness. HOpe i was of help. Congrats!

hello pregnant pexers!
i just have a few question:
1.) is it ok for a pregnant woman to eat breakfast cereal every morning in her 1 trimester? i saw that it contains a lot of folic acid and iron.
2.) is it true that pregnant women should not eat eggplant and monggo food and tuna? also, is it true that she must eat a lot of grapes and gabi (yung hinahalo sa sinigang), is this urban legend?
3.) is it true that if the mother is blooming, the child is prolly a girl, otherwise its a boy.
4.) is normal when her hemoglobin drops occassionally?

redhakaw,
1.) is it ok for a pregnant woman to eat breakfast cereal every morning in her 1 trimester? -->yes, it's okay
2.) is it true that pregnant women should not eat eggplant and monggo food and tuna? --> according to my OB, i should avoid food na matatamis, maalat, raw food such as sushi. I asked her na me nabasa ako online na articles about some seafood/fish na high in mercury content kasi merong certain types of tuna na high in mercury. Sabi nya na parang wala pa daw evidence sa mga pregnant women pero we can still avoid those food.
fruits are good for preggies and being advised to eat a lot of those so oks yung grapes.
3.) is it true that if the mother is blooming, the child is prolly a girl, otherwise its a boy. --> me mga ilan na nagsasabi na blooming ako and one of my friends predicted na baby girl but when I had my ultrasound to check my baby's gender it's a baby boy so it means di totoo na nalalaman yung gender ng baby kung blooming or not yung mother.

Hi Ms Raina. I Visited the Enfant Store (megamall) last March 25 since we are planning to buy a playpen/crib. When we got there we ask the two sales staff (male and female) everything about the playpen. As a sales staff they should be aware what are the products they are selling for, they should know how also to convince their customer. For a simple question i ask them like: ilang months ba pwde mag stay ang baby sa playpen ang sagot sa akin 3 months lang po sabe sure ka hanggang three months lang. tapos yung girl nag tanong sa guy yung guy hindi rin maka sagot. Wala namang ibang customer nung time na yun kundi kami lang. Sabe ko nga grabeh naman bibili pa kami ng playpen tapos hanggang three months old lang pala pwde si baby dito. Di ba dapat they should know about it, they should convince me like "mam maganda po to kasi matibay talaga maganda din yung kulay at mura lang etc." wala man lang ganun parang wala silang gana mag sales. compared sa mga sales staff ng dept store ng sm kahit dumaan ka lang they will greet you they would even introduce their product.

To answer your question regarding the playpen, you can use it up to 2-4 years old, depends on the baby. However, for the changing table and the upper level of the playpen, it is only up to 6 months to 1 year. Once the baby can start standing up, then you should not be using the upper layer of the playpen.

i'm having a boy.
That's less than AED10! Mas mahal nga lang ang mothercare dito.

hi jerry's girl: kelan ba schedule mo ng first ultrasound? Yung sa akin kasi nag umpisa ako mag lihi when i was 2mos to 5mos. Or baka yung baby mo boy.

hi jerry's girl: kelan ba schedule mo ng first ultrasound? Yung sa akin kasi nag umpisa ako mag lihi when i was 2mos to 5mos. Or baka yung baby mo boy.
Kelan ba due mo iyah ??? are u scared of labor naba? Me, im terrified but at the same time looking forward to have a baby na, im 35 na this year and weve been waiting for this baby for 6 years :)

my wife is 39 weeks pregnant our first angel and im wondering is it true na pag 1 cm kailangan maglakad lakad para lumabas yung angel namin?
our doctor said na mag contact daw kami para lumabas and we did it last week pero nag pacheck kami kanina 1 cm pa rin

hello po..
based on my experience, dapat kung 1cm na yung wife mo, umpisahan nya na maglakad lakad kasi nakakatulong yun para mabilis lumabas si baby..sa case ko, i undergo 1 week labor, I was 39 weeks then..I was 1 cm dilated for 5 days, tapos naging 3cm, then finally 6cm na.. after few hours, lumabas na rin si baby..sa 1 week na yun,may times na naiinip na rin talaga ko kasi ang tagal tagal nya lumabas..wala akong ginawa kundi maglakad umaga at hapon.(as in nag alay lakad talaga!:D)at kinareer ko ang pag akyat baba sa hagdan(pero ingat rin dapat!)Thank God effective naman sya sakin...Goodluck po!!

thanks sa link sa breastmilk storage!
to neilie--i guess true yun kasi nung nasa labor room ako may nakasabay akong mommy na pinapalakad lakad ng mga resident kasi 1 cm na sya.para mas mapabilis labor
in my case, progressive labor ko. di ko na kinailangan maglakad-lakad kasi in a matter of hours bumuka cervix ko :) Naunahan ko pa yung mommy na kasabay ko sa labor room...

hi guys, i dunno if u responded 2 d last message i sent out before goin on maternity leave but i just wanna let u guys know that i already gave birth last march 13. it was a normal delivery but the baby was forced out via forcep and the labor was long and dry in 25 hours. my water bag broke first before contraction eh. i was on epidural during the course of the labor itself so it wasnt so painful but i felt the pain after i woke up hours after giving birth. although she had pneumonia, oxygen, was on antibiotic, and stayed in the hospital for 5 more days after i was discharged; she is now a smiley and agile little angel whom we all love: me, my husband and everyone who sees her.
