No end in sight to Marcos gold racket

ROXAS CITY--The promise of a better life has lured villages in Capiz to enlist themselves as members of a foundation chaired by Alvin Alvicent Almirante, who claims to be the illegitimate son of the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos.

The foundation, known as East-West Pacific AAA Foundation Inc., has been offering perks like ''grants'' of between P20, 000 to P500, 000 for livelihood, free insurance benefits and scholarship grants to residents of coastal barangays in this city and in remote areas of the province where poverty is widespread.

Some 500 residents of the adjoining barangays of Libas and Barra in Roxas have already enlisted themselves as members of the foundation. They paid P30 each in registration fees and P3 for the cost of the biodata sheet.

Many residents said they did not mind paying P33, which they said, was ''very minimal.''

''What is P33? If the perks come, the better. But if not, it's okay,'' said Violeta Escario, resident of Barangay Libas.

Some residents of Maayon town in Capiz were also reportedly enticed into joining the foundation because of its attractive offers.

The "foundation volunteers" showed the residents a videotape of Almirante, informing them of the advantages of joining the foundation. To join the foundation, an applicant must be 18 years old and a natural-born Filipino citizen.

Grace Fajardo, the foundation chair in Capiz who described herself as a volunteer, said they were not forcing the residents to join the foundation since ''we are a free country.''

Almirante, she added, was coming to Capiz ''maybe within this month'' to launch what she called the foundation's ''people's recovery program.''

Almirante, or Alvin Alvincent Chua, claimed to be the illegitimate son of Marcos. He reportedly had access to the roughly 2,000 metric tons of good bullion of the late dictator.

The late dictator entrusted him with the hidden wealth, now worth $64 billion, that was deposited in an undisclosed bank, according to Fajardo.

She said Almirante felt it was about time he came out in the open as Marcos' other son. She said Almirante hid in London and was rumored to have died there at the height of Marcos' rule.

According to Fajardo, the foundation has already organized their chapters in Cebu and Mandaluyong. Now, they are trying to make their presence felt in Western Visayas, she said.

Almirante and his ''volunteers'' were reported to be recruiting residents of Camarines Sur and Albay to join their foundation with the promise of easy wealth.

In his talk with residents there, it was reported that Almirante did not tell the new foundation members how he supposedly became Marcos' illegitimate son.

He was quoted as saying in media reports that he would rather forget his past and that it was not important who his mother was.

''What is important is the crusade of the foundation,'' he was quoted as saying.

I am willing to pay P33 to cover the costs of one PExer who is willing to enroll in this scheme. I only have one condition. The PExer must report his experience to us in this thread.

Game?
