I'm a Graphic Design person but none of my projects are with anyone famous.
www.wanghutner.com, that's my old job. Left it in May, but my work is still up, actually my bio too. Freelancing now, more money but more time. As soon as it slows down a bit I'm gonna put my site up.

How's the design industry in Manila?

More money AND more time, that's like the best spot to be in :) Graphic design is slow in manila, except for the sporadic freelance projects here and there. Big companies here still put their trust in the advertising giants. Not much room for the small guys to feature their stuff, unlike in the US where Graphic Design is virtually an industry in itself.

So the question is: would you work for an advertising firm? Most of them do crappy work I know, even here. I refuse to work for the ad firms but if I was in the Philippines I would seriously think about it.

I always complain of how "corporate" design has become in US, but your post certainly puts it into perspective. I'm gonna stop complaining now :)

I would have considered working for an ad firm if the salary cap in the Philippines was higher. 20,000 pesos is not enough to cover expenses :) So what I'm doing now is starting a graphic design company with a friend. He's better at design that I am, I handle the marketing. Since february we were able to get a few clients, yet only 1 of them trusted us enough to create a print ad with us. Things are moving slow but I hope they pick up soon.

slowly but surely with hard work and talent...

Good Luck and God Bless in your business venture.
As your portfolio builds so will your clients. More of them
will trust you when they see all your other work.

Also, I'm guessing, since you guys don't have the
overhead of these large firms, you can charge less than
they do but still manage to make money. Pinoys love
to save money, definetly to your advantage.

The economic downturn in California has really hurt the
design industry. Big Graphic and Ad firms were laying
off and some small firms had to fold. Clients are not
willing to pay like they used to and many firms are not
hiring. Thus my foray into freelancing. For the firms they
can get a work force without committing and for us
freelancers a lot of work. Of course it goes without
saying, the more experience, the better you are, the
better you're chances. I'm new at this freelance thing but
it's coming along. They way it's looking now I don't think
I will go back to full-time anytime soon. If you're good,
reliable and cheaper, people will pay.

Rick430 - Thanks for the info on the job market around there. I'm ruminating on plans to go for my M.A. in interactive design over in the US sometime soon, and I need to know what I'm up against in terms of career options, since I'll need to work through school.

(And however bad it is over there in the US, it's probably worse here.) :bleh:

As for myself, I'm a graphic designer here in Manila, but my work has always been in jobs which are not specifically graphic design, but draw on it as a core skill: digital video editing (http://www.media100.com) and DVD authoring (http://www.newmedia.com.ph). That's always what's worked best for me. (I did work for a time as design exec at a web portal (http://www.myphilippines.com), but I was still too inexperienced, and it didn't work out as I'd hoped.)

Freelance or entrepeneurial graphic design is NOT my forte, and I could not possibly live on it if I tried. I still do web pages as a sideline for interested clients, but as much as possible, I prefer to work in-house under an established structure, offering graphic design or related talent as part of a larger scheme.

hi! i'm a graphic designer/web designer/illustrator/etc. i'm avoiding ad agencies myself. nothing against ad agencies, but it's not my kind of thing.

i used to work for a website firm in Makati. i did designs for some websites, including:

LegManila.com (http://www.legmanila.com/)
ClickTheCity.com (http://www.clickthecity.com/)

i did the design layout and the HTML templates. right now i'm into Flash 5.

i'm just a freelancer right now. not doing much, really, which is why i'm spending far too much time in PEx! :D

Hey ozmen, how much would you charge for a flash site? say, around 10 pages?

Hey rick, thanks for the encouraging words. I hope your career there goes well and flourishes. I saw the wang:hutner site, and let me tell you, it really blew my mind! Did that take long??

brownpauYes definetly, no argument here. The last time I was in Piñas I actually toyed with the idea of working there temporarily (2yrs)— I don't think I could do it. Also it sounds like you would be perfect as part of the graphic design wing of a company or as a designer in a large design firm. Structure is good, a place to network, learn and a stable paycheck. Somewhere down the line I could see myself as part of a good team again or partnering with someone and opening up our own firm.

ozmenLiked those sites. A designer that has knowledge of html and flash is very valuable. Maybe you should build your own site, showcasing all your talents. That's what I've been doing when I'm in between jobs. It's a lot of fun building your own on line portfolio.

jumperThe site took a long time because the two bosses kept arguing about the design. The actual design and programming didn't take any longer than other sites of comparable size. Glad you like it.

im also a graphic designer.... just graduated ....but im getting there... right now im working in an ad firm and its okay (i guess..).. the only thing i dont like about working in this kind of environment is you cant get the chance to highly express yourself.. its all about the client needs and taste.... or about the "something" that your boss always wants? i dont know for others but thats how it goes for me.... just like what i said im just starting so its okay anyway, i need to get my feet wet....

i dont know much about flash which Im planning to take some classes if i have time... but i did attempt to work with it when i was doing some contract job. (www.tripleteamgear.com) it was not fun....... im assuming you guys know about halfproject.com man .. thats awesome.. especially coming from philippines....

im mostly into prints and typography! so i dont know lets see it from there.... i have a site coming up its grapheks.com i was talking to my friends to start a site where all designer can share or show there portfolio. yeah i know a lot of people are doing that.... and of course im not trying to be like aiga.... speaking of aiga.... is there anything like that too in the philippines?

oh man...

it's hard to find a job here. i don't know I guess this is the unyielding reality that you have to have the absolute or approximate degree to be hired. i graduated from a business course however my forte is in the arts - almost all around.

with all the competition going around, it has been very disheartening for me to pursue such career. i don't know...

I guess for us graphic designers to survive, it's all about making contacts. Sometimes we can't really be picky and just have to grab every opportunity we can get because of such tough competition. It really is hard to penetrate in the biz now especially with the rise of number of designers.

I'm also a graphic designer , but I'm more into web design now. Kailangan lang talaga may contacts ka talaga & refferal. After graduation, I was a freelance web designer, the first company website that I did was owned by a well known family in the Philippine business. He had a lot of business associations so I got a lot of refferal local & foreign companies even embassies.

As for now I work as web designer for a European company here in Philippines.

I haven't been able to make an online portfolio because of workload.

I'm also planning to get my Master of Fine Arts in Digital Arts in US, and work there also. Graphic Design is a big industry in the US.

ABOUT THE AD AGENCIES HERE IN THE PHILIPPINES, well in a way related din:

Back in college we had a proffessor who is an art director for an ad agency here in Manila. He was really a good teacher, he was also our thesis adviser, he thought us how they really do it in the ad agency. But the thing is yung mga ideas namin after a year or so....ha! nakikita namin sa TV/print, for the very same products na he made us do our plates. Sabi ng iba fine arts sa ibang university, ganoon din daw sa kanila.

Ok lang sa akin kse super dami naman naming natutunan sa kanya, and our thesis was the one that got me & my classmates a lot of job interviews after we graduated, and a job as well.

Lahat naman yata ng graphic designer may pangarap na magkaroon ng sariling design studio/ad agency.

nakakapagtaka lang no...i was just wondering nakapagbasa me ng THE MANILA BULLETIN and since newly grad ako from UST, hanap ako ng job as graphic artist or graphic designer....but to my dismay, sa kinapal-kapal ng CLASSIFIED ADS section, 3 clippings lang nakuha ko....

naku...

hindi na ba kailangan ang mge graphic designers nowadays??
