View Full Version : Do looks count?

i want to ask the honest opinion of hr practitioners...do looks really count when finding an ideal candidate? May advantage pa talaga kung cute ka? or could it also be a disadvantage? Kasi may mga kakilala ako na madaling napro-promote at madaling nakakahanap ng trabaho kasi may "looks" sila. Paano na lang ang mga katulad kong may "inner beauty"?

i depends of what you look like, if u are presentable and ready to take challenge why be scared. Kahit ba ikaw pa ang pinakapangit na babae dyan pero ikaw naman ang pinakamaraming kaibigan at alam ng top management that your working hard to achieve your goal or not, a big possibility is there. Dont count your money outside baka ka manakawan

It helps, but it shouldn't be the basis of the decision. I'm sure there are some people who hire because of the looks, but there's a risk that they will regret their decision. Hiring should really be based on the experience and the skills of the person.

Now that I think about it, there's more "pressure" if you have good looks, because when the interviewer sees you, he/she will be interested one way or another. And so you have to follow through with a great interview. Now if you sucked in the interview, the reaction will be "sayang!" Something like that. Just my opinion. :)

Looks could be a factor specially if the job requires the employee to be with a lot of people (advertising, sales etc.). But for other jobs, the main basis of promotion is still job performance. Even if the person has the looks but don't have the performance required by the position, i guess the promotion would still be on hold :)

Whether we want to admit it or not our looks do affect the way people perceive and consequently react to us. This is true in any situation, be it school, work or in our personal life.

This is true at any age. Babies have a tendency to stare at faces regarded as attractive longer than faces considered plain.
The more attractive a child is the higher the likelihood that teachers and peers perceive him or her as more intelligent, more friendly and more confident. This subconscious reaction in turn has effects, albeit subtle, on the behavior or treatment of those people to the children. The children in turn learn from these reactions.

In the workplace, the CEO of your company is also more likely to be a man of above-average height.

In the realm of politics, all except two US Presidents have been the taller of the two candidates.

This is not to say that our looks are our destiny. These are just statistics. We are not statistics, we are individuals.

May Angels smile upon you,
Joe

Mercury Rising:
Someone posted a similar message in the thread "questionable biodata and interview practices in the Philippines". Sabi niya recruiters throw out resumes without even reading them just on the basis of the picture that comes with it! That's so wrong, it should stop.

Everyone covered the ground here. :) One last point, though:
"first impressions count." It doesn't mean you have to look like a model to make a good impression, but it will increase your chances of getting hired if you project a confident, intelligent demeanor. And, yeah, if you're applying in a corporation (not a dot-com), grooming and the right wardrobe STILL count.

pinkmoon... kaya ako pag nag-send ng resume, hindi ako nagbibigay ng picture kasi additional expense...pag na-interview na ako at hiningan na nila ako ng picture saka pa lang ako nagbibigay ... besides what's the correlation between having a nice pic (w/ full make-up) and work competencies when screening applicants? but in an image obssessed world, this really happens :( and tama ka, may friends akong nasa hr...totoo they admit they make fun of the pics submitted to them. padala ko kaya ang nude pics ko...magkatrabaho na kaya ako?;)

looks probably do count if you'll be working as a front-liner (sales, marketing, reception, etc.) or something or if you'll be working in the airline industry as a Flight Attendant.

but, i do agree that looks should not be a discriminating factor when applying for a job. you guys are right, what's the point of including a picture with your application. initially i thought, it's a form of identification so that when you actually get called for an interview, the interviewer will know that you are the "actual" person who applied for the job. but, it sounds like it is used to filter the "not so" pleasant-looking applicants. that's really unfair.
this kind of recruiting process will most likely filter out the highly skilled and qualified candidates.

i used to work for an IT consulting firm in makati, lahat as in lahat ng babae na nagwowork dun talagang magaganda (sales, programmers, managers).
one time i was tasked to lead a project so we placed an ad sa manila bulletin for the position. i need like 3-4 ppl for the project.
few days after ma fill-up yung slots sa job position, there is this girl na nag walk in para sa position, shes a looker (w/c i later found out na commercial model sya ng johnson & johnson), i told my boss na wala ng opening pero sabi nya interviewhin ko pa din daw. so ayun yung boss ko gumawa ng "job opening" just to accomodate her hehehehe

another incident (same company), may opening na admin assistant, my boss was interviewing 2 assumptionista na fresh grad. after nung interview ng 2, my boss called me sabay tanong, "sinong mas type mo?" then i replied "yung 2nd na girl", sabi ng boss ko "wag yun may bf na daw" hehehehe

anyway, my boss keeps on telling us (guys) na we have to maintain a perfect ABQ (average beauty quotient) sa office.
