my ortho told me i need to remove the excess gums in between my two front teeth. so, ill be having the operation this monday. I just want to know exactly what will transpire in the operation. How would they do it? What will be the effects post-operation? She told me it's just like getting a tooth removed. I also know she'll be using a local anesthesia. I wouldve asked her but I had no chance to do so because of the long weekend. THanks!

Is the gingiva too fleshy between your two front teeth that it is connected to the inside upper area of your lip? If so, then what your orthodontist will do is called a labial frenectomy. After the local anesthesia has taken effect, he/she will just use 2 hemostats (they look like scissors, pero clamp-like yung dulo) to grasp the excess tissue. After that, the excess tissue is excised or cut off with a scalpel. After that, isusuture niya yung area closed.
You'll need to get your sutures removed after the wound has closed. Not sure lang ha, pero some dentists put some dressing (parang putty-like material which hardens) over the area para protected yung area.
It's a pretty routine procedure...so kick back and relax. :)

Nope, the excess gums is not attached to my upper lip. THe excess gums that would be removed separates my two front teeth(i have a gap in between them, a la david letterman or madonna hehe). SO, yung gums na nagcause ng pagkaroon ng gap in between these two front teeth ang aalisin. Just wanna know how it would feel post-operation and the things they would do in the operation coz i have a class in the afternoon and i can't miss it because it's the first day of class and the teacher in that class is known to be a terror hehehe...
thanks once again! :)

hi scheme , pa drop in....
so since you discounted the fact that the minor surgical procedure that your orthodontist will perform to your come monday is not a labial frenectomy, are you saying that the overgrowth of gingiva found between your two front teeth (central incisors) will be the ones removed?
if this is so, you might consider asking your orthodontist for a dental certificate right after the procedure since for sure you wouldn't be expected to attend your class.
expect some post operative swelling, numbness and pain. for sure you wouldn't be wanting to attend class after this. believe me!
just a little bit of postop management: make sure to follow all your orthodontist's advise to avoid any untoward complications. remember, your dentist knows best!
good luck for monday's operation, hayaan mo minor lang yan... your braces' adjustment hurt more than this minor surgical procedure....
*okay*

:) wow!:)
ang bilis naman mag-reply ng mga online-dentists! galeng talaga!
yup, yung overgrowth ng gingiva (ummm...is this the medical term for gums?) ang tatanggalin. It's actually small lang. I think I developed it (which caused the gap between my two front teeth) because I thumb-sucked till I was around 8 (hehehe...nahihiya ako!)
So, how would they remove the excess gums? Will they burn it or something? Just curious...
anwyays, so, doc, u mean it will hurt like hell?!? for how long? will the pain subside after 24 hrs? I can't miss my tues classes kasi eh...
so, i guess driving home from the hospital after the operation is out of the question, right doc? another problem yan... wala pa naman kaming driver...tsk tsk..
thanx uli! :)
ps sorry if i keep on asking questions, medyo kabado lang po kasi ako...don't like things being put in my mouth kasi! ehhehe

Ine-excise lang yung excess gingiva....using a scalpel. As in kung ano talaga yung excess, yun ang tatanggalin. Yung burning na sinasabi mo, do you mean "cauterizing?" Ginagamit lang yun pag super laki ng wound na naghehemorrhage. Maliit lang naman yung tatanggalin sa iyo diba. ;) Minor surgical procedure as doc Pollmaster said.
You will feel pain and some soreness for a few days pero your dentist will prescribe some pain relievers naman eh. *okay*
Aaaand... I'm sure you'll be able to drive. Local anesthetesia lang yan. :D

I had the operation nung monday. The first thing my oral surgeon did was siempre, check my gums out. After that, nag-injection siya sa area ng operation thrice (di naman masakit yung paglagay ng anesthesia, it was like parang kagat ng ant lang...) After nun, nag-start na siya with the operation. He used this electric gadget to cut the excess gums. It emitted this smoke while the cutting was done. (panget ng lasa ng smoke...hehe) He, then, stitched something in my mouth. (I don't know the term but I do recall hearing "suture") All in all, the operation lasted for 20-30 minutes. Short lang pala sha.
As for the post-operation 'trauma'.... Wala naman. Hindi naman masakit. Very uncomfortable lang. Nag-swell yung upper lip ko and it was quite difficult to eat. It was hard rin to talk and smile kasi feeling ko mapupunit yung tahi. It has been 5 days after the operation at medyo nawala na yung swelling at 'pain' pero meron pa rin kahit papano. Yung feeling ko ngayon eh parang nangingilo yung gums ko. Pero, okay lang. I won't die naman. hehehe
I'm going back on monday to have the stitches (or suture?) removed.

Hi Doc Poll! Hi Misa! Hi Scheme!
Sorry medyo na late ako sa pag-singit dito sa post na ito.
I've been following the procedures that scheme have surprisingly documented completely and correctly. para ka na ring dentist kung mag-describe.
Electrosurgical techniques or cauterization (just like what u had, scheme) is usually done only on minimally enlarged soft tissues. If it is done on extensive tissue masses, scarring og the mouth lining will occur.
It's good to hear that minimal lang ang post-operative effects na ane-experience mo. i hope this will really lessen the fear that people have on dentists. mas ok pa nga siguro kung pinanood mo yung whole or some parts of the procedure.
It might be a little gross at the start but at least u know what was being done on you and you won't feel so helpless. Wala lang, for me I think na some operations are better for the patients to see. How about you Doc Poll and Misa-soon-to-be-doc?
What other post-ops were given to you scheme?

why hello  mrhufriedy long time, no posts :glee:
scheme it's good to hear that everything went well...
hope the others will realize too that it is not at all that scary to undergo these kinds of dental treatments. minsan kasi we get too scared about some things that are new to us... lalo na pag medyo graphic ang kwentuhan about certain procedures!
good morning, misa
