Dude,
I've been in the IT business for almos 13 years now.
Canada has always been my first choice. Have prepared all the papers, but am hindered by the expensive cost.
Any chance for a sponsorship?:D

I wish I could sponsor all of you. I only have a small place...
But, if you have a job lined up and all you need is the working visa, the process is a lot faster if you are IT than if you are in another field.

HI...
I am already here in Toronto, Canada for two months now, still I dont have a job. I am a mainframe programmer with 3+ experience. Maybe you can help me finding a job here, I am very desperate in working now, I dont care if its a entry level position as long as the secuiry and the pay is good. I know COBOL, CICS, DB2, VSAM, IDMS, JCL, and a little of ACCESS.
Thanks for your help.

Hi Traviz...
I didnt applied for a working visa, but an independent immigrant visa....
well, ok din ang Psych dito, pero ang alam ko mag-aaral ka pa ng additional course or more on certification sa field mo... pero if I were you, not now, siguro next year, of kung me kamag-anak ka naman dito, eh di go for it... but dont expect the best... well, its not the land of milk and dollar (as we all perceived)...
Am not sure why Canada is not answering, maybe he's busy... shucks, I need his help...

OLD:
3) NBI, Diploma etc.
4) Proof of relationship (kung meron ka kamag-anak dito)
5) show money of CAD10000 or its Php or other currency equivalent
NEW
Same 1,2,3,4
5) show money of CAD25000 or its Php or other currency equivalent
in this NEW rule, dapat meron kang kamag-anak dito OR meron ka ng job offer dito (kaya it will be best kung mag-apply ka muna dito as WORKING VISA, tapos kung nandito ka na, apply ka ng immigrant visa (so wala ka ng problem sa show money)
ayun lang po muna... ingat...

travis:
mahirap ngayon maghanap ng work dito dahil sa recession lalo pang nag-down ang market nung nagkalat si asal-aso na Bin Laden na iyan (Sept 11), bakit kasi ayaw pang mamatay ang baboy na iyon eh... ;(... para magsama na sila ng diyos nya... (sorry huh, medyo hindi ko lang maubos maisip na meron palang relihiyon or grupo na ganon, "war not peace" ang motto)
anyway, mabalik tayo sa usapan, recession ngayyon so nag-la-lay off ang mga company dito, saka mahirap din umasa sa nga agency since hindi rin sila nagkakaroon ng mga job opening... kaya hanggang ngayon wa a pa rin akong work... pero hopefullu next year gumanda na ang economy dito...
regarding naman sa immigration, yeah medyo mahigpit na nga sila kasi gusto lang daw nila ang "the best and brightest" ang kukunin nila... weird no... kasi mostly ang mga the best and brightest nasa US, ang mga iba naman ginagawa lang nilang stepping stone ang Canada para makapasok sa US (ewan ko kung naisip nila iyon)... pero OOK naman dito (wag nga lang winter kasi sobrang lamig eh)

thanks for the info knotty boy! i think the solution to that is not to be very chossy w/ the kind of job u take at this time...while there's not much oppurtunity. kahit simple job lang muna as long na meron, diba? next year pag ok na, e di you look for somehitng you really want. anyway, you have your show money naman siguro w/ you...hehehe..
yep, i've heard alot of stories of people just using canada as a gateway to US. it's not a real country anyway, hahaha!! :D :D
knoty-boy
Jan 5, 2002, 12:58 AM
am not very choosy right now, pero syempre as much as possible kukuha naman ako ng job na medyo related sa work ko... kahit data entry lang or clerical... am planning to penetrate the company first then I'll move from there...
Hey, Canada is a country... iyon nga lang, medyo nawawalan sila ng tao kasi pumupuntsa sa US, kaya nga flat liner ang population growth ng Canada eh... kung meron man, minimal lang... come to think of it... 30 M lang ang population dito... saka ang laki ng place for a 30 M...
iyon lang po muna... ingat

hi knoty!
perhaps u can help me out w/ my lil confusion here. im not sure either to take yp psychology or an IT course in college. my goal is to be able to work abroad and canada is one of the best options. w/c would give me a better chance of being empliyed there, psych or an IT course? i equally like the two fields but the main 'holdback' for me to an IT course is that i think theyre more on math and trigonometry and calculus stuff etc and im really weak on that side. any opinion on this?

musta na ang mga nagaaply sa canada? knoty boy, in ur observation there? how does the IT opportunities behave right now ? kasi balita ko may recession dyan? how badly affected ang IT industry? or depende sa province ang effect? do u know any sites of companies or job db's in canada that u can refer to us. nag apply kasi ko for immigrant dyan. its been a year na pero wala pa rin. bumagal ata ang tanggapan. so yung may work lang daw ang mas mabilis mapaalis. what can u say about this?

Hello, knotty boy! We have a cousin in Edmonton, so we might temporarily stay there and check the working scenario there. We might start out looking for jobs in West Edmonton mall. We are also checking out on Toronto or Vancouver (the usual!), However, the apartment rates in both places are bloody expensive. By the way, is it really advisable that we get the services of an immigration firm? Man, it is damn expensive. Ciao!;) ;)

medyo affected ang Toronto sa recession, but sabi nila (and am not sure if this is true) na umaangat na ang economy sa US and Canada... Like albeta and Winnipeg, medyo ok sila kasi medyo walang tao kasi doon kaya maraming opening... regarding sa IT, yup, very affected sila, kasi maraming lay-off dito, so sa mga bagong dating dito, mahihirapan sila kasi hindi sila papansinin ng mga recruiter since nag-aapply ulit ang mga na-lay-off which they think na me canadian experience na...
ayun lamang po... ingat kayo

Well, if you're looking for jobs in IT, a lot of the IT companies are in Ottawa, Ontario. Honestly though, sometimes Canada isn't very fair. Oftentimes, they'll ask you for experience, that is, Canadian experience. Minsan naman, overqualified. That's the reality of it. However, if u r young and have had considerable experience in the Philippines and know the trends in the marketplace, u have a pretty good chance of landing a good IT job. If u land in Canada and you dont seem to get anywhere jobwise, the best thing to do is do volunteer work and study. There are tons of jobs in IT but there are also tons of layoffs, so be on your toes and equip yourselves with extra skills u think will benefit u when u get the interview. Also, there is no such thing as company loyalty in Canada cuz oftentimes you will switch from one company and one job to another, so the whole year is the season for job hunting. Just be persistent. If choices are limited, start small-time and work your way up. The government policy in Canada encourages imigration, but when u get here don't ever be surprised that u can't get the high-end job you got back in the Philippines. There is a lot of bullsh*t that happens in Canada, but there is never a lack of opportunities and jobs. So many jobs, yet a marginal amount of quality jobs. Remember the reason they're shipping in immigrants is because there is a shortage of labour in the country and they need the labour to support the huge elderly demographic who expect regular monthly pension payments and benefits that your income tax provides. But of course, after my lengthy rant (which holds true), don't be discouraged because the chances and opportunities are provided, but they will never ever spoonfeed anyone. Just try and try and try again until you get THE job.

hello.:) gusto ko lang sana magtanong kung ano yung sinasabi nilang selection decision regarding dun sa new policy ng canada for independent immigrant. Alam kong 80 points ang kailangan this time. Actually di ko nga alam kung papasa ako dahil wala pa akong masyadong experience in IT. im a graduate of Com Eng. but bec of some personal reasons di ako kumuha ng experience in IT instead i worked in a bank for 4 years....ang labo no? Yung mom ko and brother are already in canada, immigrant sila dun. I also have relatives na canadian citizen na, kaya lang dun sa bagong proposed selection grids ng canada parang wala ka ng additional points kahit pa may kamaganak sa canada:(

hello...
just read your email...

Well, boss ko puti, pero mabait naman... iyon nga lang nasa dugo na nila ang pagiging pranka, so kung ayaw nila sa iyo, talagang ayaw nila... and they can be very brutally frank about it... well... kanya kanya lang naman

no problem tol...

hi peepz!
I came across this thread by chance. I don't want to burst anyone's bubble about going abroad for greener pastures. I'm gonna give you the lowdown on what companies usually look for in prospective employees. Sa Canada na ako lumaki and graduated with a degree in Human Resources Management and Marketing. I worked for a large company in the HR Dept. doing the recruiting and such. Having had experience with a lot of hirings I can tell you now that companies here do not really recognize a college degree from the Philippines. Usually a college degree from there is only equivalent to 1st or 2nd year of college here. An example of this is people with engineering degrees from the Philippines apply for an engineering position here are not even remotely considered for an entry-level position. Sad to say, but that's the reality of it. That's why it is hard for graduates from the Phils. to actually obtain a job here similar to that of the one they held previously. In order to get to the position you would like to be in, you would have to go back to school and meet the requirements. And you would have to start from the very bottom and work your way up in order to be successful here.
As a filipina myself, pakiusap lang po na huwag kayong magpaloko sa mga tao like "Canada" (thread starter) kasi usually pag posting na ganyan chances are yung services nila hindi free.
Just take knoty-boy's situation as an example of how difficult it is to land a job here when your diploma is not from a recognized Canadian university. I'm not discouraging anyone from applying here, but if you do apply here make sure you have relatives or friends that can help you out while you look for a job cause chances are you are not going to land the same job you have now if you come here. And PLEASE lang po kung mag-a-apply kayo do it through immigration canada and not with these so-called "immmigration consultants" kase halos pera lang hinahanap ng mga yaan.
knoty-boy
Apr 21, 2002, 08:45 AM
hello again
Tama si Stunna... the "Canadian" really dont recognized our universities... kesehadong graduate ka ng UP, Ateneo, LaSalle, PSBA, parepareho lang ang tingin sa atin, kahit magna cum laude ka or magna nakaw ng grade, pareho lang din dito iyan. Tignan nyo ako, graduate sa Pinas, nagwork na ako ng 5 years dyan, pero dito, para akong bagong graduate, at nagmakaawa ako para lang makuha ang trabaho ko ngayon - as in ayaw akong kunin kasi overqualified ako, pero hindi din ako makuha sa IT, kasi wala daw akong "CANADIAN EXPERIENCE"... geez...
I am very sorry to say this, Stunna, but sometimes I feel na very discriminatory ang mga tao dito... lalo na ang mga ibang puti... saka napapansin ko, hirap umangat ang mga Pinoy dito, kaya mangilan-ngilan lang ang alam ko na me managerial position or higher... kasi iyong mga pinoy na pumunta dito na engineer or teacher or programmer sa Pinas...nagiging caregiver, janitor, or counter clerk sa Tim Horton or Starbucks... mga iba naman, bumabalik sa Pinas dahil walang wala dito
Siguro nga ***** ako at nagpadala ako sa promises ng Canada, nakita ko kasi na "Equal opportunity" ang bansang ito... pero come on, knoty-boy, smell the estero in binondo... there's no such thing as "Equal opportunity", thats a crap... well, in fairness to other, hindi lahat ng puti ganon, kaibigan ko sa office ngayon puti, saka mabait silang 2... paminsan minsan nga mas discriminatory pa ang mga kapwa Pinoy dito eh... yes my friends, dala ng ibang mga pinoy dito ang "hilaan system"
Kaya, If I were you, pag-isipan nyong mabuti ang pagpunta dito... hindi madaling pumunta dito... kung maganda na ang position nyo dyan, dyan na lang kayo... wag kayong tutulad sa iba (isa na ako) na nagpadala sa pangakong hangin nila... kung talagang gusto nyo dito... better prepare yourself, financially (as in madaming pera), physically (very exhausting ang trabaho dito for a pay of CAD 10 per hour), spiritually (ma****st talaga ang faith nyo ke God), mentally (hirap mag-english huh) and psychologically (mede-depress lang kayo dito)
Stunna: anong "Canada" thread ang sinasabi mo? Was it "Pinoy in Canada Unite" sa Filipino Everywhere?
ayun lang...

fossil7: we're glad that we can help... we just want to be realistic... ang mahirap kasi sa bansang ito, they're promoting their country as "equal oppotunity country", actually, it's "equal opportunistic country" :D... in the safer side, ok naman dito... malamig, malinis, mura pagkain, iyon lang ang masasabi ko... kaya ang payo ko, kung maganda na ang lagay mo dyan, dyan ka muna... kung me chance kang pumunta dito, mas maganda kung working visa muna ang i-apply mo, para ma-feel mo itong bansang ito at the same time assess kung gusto mo dito o hindi...
ayun lang

hi there!
its been a while since i posted....(who cares btw heheh)
... i must say i've really grown up since my last postings... from having job security, dealing with b^tches in the corporate rat race, and dealing with reality that i didn't aspire to become a capitalist, but rather (kahit mataas ang position) an employee.
...been here in canada since i resigned from my job. i made the decision to become a fob (fresh on board :)) since na kung magiging employee rin naman ako...why not work here...
...frankly speaking, hindi rin ganun kaganda dto. while the comfort of living here is way beyond that of the phil., ayoko namn maging isang store clerk lamang. ( *iskul* pride kicking in)
given the situation with all things being equal. wlang sinabi 'tong mga 'to sa banatan ng talento. pero alam ng mga puti ito, at hindi sila papayag na mataasan sila.
one thing i've found out is that may herierchy nga. (don't take me wrong napansin ko lang...)
1. whites
2. asians (singkits, malays)
3. asians (middle eastern)
4. blacks
5. tsikanos
but still, being from a good college still widens the opportunities. it can be quite easy to shut a smart-mouthed red**** hehehe
-> don't get me wrong. i'm not racial or anything.... and its not about the race BUT the culture. A german (meaning physical attributes) born and raised in the timbuktu will act the way he was taught.....blah blah...forgive me i'm babling again...
anyway, hav 2 go. thanks 2 anyone who shared his/her tym reading this. kalingan na ulit mag bakasyon, eche soul searching pala :)
....
