If someone would want to make a career shift to buyer/merchandiser from a totally unrelated field like HR, what are some ways to equip yourself with the most basic skills needed? enroll in a certificate course?

i think this topic has been discussed in numerous threads...

according to my friends, it doesn't really matter if you have courses or what-not. as long as you have a strong sense of style and a great feel for what the consumers want. though, it does help to have fashion insider friends...for the philippines, like being tight with the Tantocos or the Coronels..something to that effect. But i'm sure if you can wag an FIT or Parson's diploma, that would help but the world's best stylists and buyers/merchandisers don't really have those diplomas. The youngest and brightest Buyer/Merchandiser who works for Barneys New York(IMHO, the best damn store out there) is, i believe, a philo major from Brown.

You mean Yumi Shin? Yeah, she's pretty young. The prob here in Manila is you really have to kiss *** to get anywhere. I've worked in a magazine but the industry is sooo competitive.
