Are you working there? I will be going there this July... for work

May 29, 2001, 11:33 AM
11# UST_guard'98: i'm currently staying at dover, nj, and our office is located at rockaway, nj.
might have to leave soon because i'll be working in the new york area and i have to find a more convenient place..probably in jersey city.
lukekarol: what company will you be working for and where in new jersey?
btw, anyone knows apts to rent (affordable ones) in the jersey city/ny area? somewhere convenient if you're working in the midtown part of ny.

hi battleangel. welcome to stinky joy-z.
i'm not from jersey city but i have some friends who live there. great filipino community! i was there this weekend for a memorial day cook-out and the filipino community had their annual santa cruzan parade.
anywhere in jersey city is actually just a path train away
from nyc. just be careful--you'll be one of those looney commuters who are always rushing from one platform to another. just an advise when you actually become one of those commuters--don't be too polite or you'll get left!!
as for an apartment, what price range are you looking for? do you want your own apartment or do you want to rent a room or what have you? let me know and i might be able to help you (take note MIGHT). hit me up on the email.
tr|n|ty
Jun 1, 2001, 08:29 PM
battleangel-a good alternative to manhattan is queens and brooklyn..i've chosen to move to queens because it's cheaper and you're just 15 minutes away from midtown :)
battleangel: hey. remember me? i'm here na rin at pennsylvania but i'll be transferring at queens, ny since i'll be working too at midtown manhattan. so where are you working here? find a place in queens, hirap to get an apartment but luckily, i was able to find one here at queens, at woodside pero its a bedroom lang. have to share the house with the owner, mahal kasi eh. let me know if you need help, i can help you out. i think queens is a better place to stay than in jersey city which is quite crowded.
trinity: hey, where you from queens? m here at woodise, u working at manhattan too?
tr|n|ty
Jun 2, 2001, 04:16 AM
wax-I"M IN WOODSIDE!!! :lol: 59th st to be exact...around a block away from queens blvd...i just graduated from college and i'm going to work in manhattan come july 9th :)
battleangel
Jun 2, 2001, 05:56 AM
tr|n|ty: i'm also considering queens. a friend of a friend is renting a two-bedroom apartment and is looking for a housemate. the place costs $1140 and i think it's new. if i live there, we'll be splitting the bill - that's less than $600/month. is that rate ok?
wax: hi! so you're here too :) i'll also be working for a company in midtown manhattan. what a coincidence! :lol:
tr|n|ty
Jun 2, 2001, 02:13 PM
that's a good price :) i'm actually paying cheaper(i'm such a cheapskate when it comes to apartments :lol: ) but that sounds good to me. i was kinda hesitant moving into queens but it's not bad at all. it's terribly close to manhattan..u can always hop on different trains and you'll be where the action is in less than 20 minutes. another good option is brooklyn..i particularly like park slope and brooklyn heights( TONs as in TONS of my college buddies are moving there..it's like a fordham exodus out there :teehee: )
trinity: ey! i'll be moving in next week at 72nd st, a block from queens blvd too. i'm just renting a room for 500. it's owned by a filipino doctor so okay na rin and my roomates are 2 filipinos too though i haven't seen them. eb na tyo! :)
battleangel: i guess ok na yung 600 something na apt but where in queens? find out first if its a good location like if its near the subway and all. when are you moving?
tr|n|ty
Jun 2, 2001, 07:09 PM
wax-sige ba! but i'll be leaving for california for some hang time with my brother and my best friend in stanford. i'll b back by the 27th though....if u want, just email me..i think my email is still up with my profile and don't be fooled by it..that address really works :) have fun moving in!!
battleangel
Jun 4, 2001, 03:57 PM
tr|n|ty: good to hear that it's a good rate :) coz i heard that it's hard to find a place to rent in ny. i'll also look at brooklyn. it's funny, i've always thought that queens was not a good place to stay, but my friends tell me that the place is ok :)
wax: i don't know which part of queens, but my friend says that it's convenient to commute to manhattan from there. not sure yet when i'll be moving but probably by the end of this month.
m'saia: sure! :) i'll email you once i start looking.
tr|n|ty
Jun 5, 2001, 06:37 PM
battleangel-well there are definitely better areas in queens than the others..i particularly like astoria, woodside, sunny side and rego park :)
m'saia
Jun 5, 2001, 08:38 PM
i must say...you're probably better off staying in queens than in jersey city. if you're planning to commute, it's probably lesser transfer.
most of queens is definitely nicer than jersey city. jersey city is mad ghetto --no offense to anyone from chill town. i have been hanging out in jersey city for the past i don't know how long. they supposedly tried to "clean" it up years back but i have yet to see it. i think the only nice part is if you live by the water which is very expensive.

To stay with the topic.. lol. I'm at Cresskill, New Jersey.
11# UST_guard'98 I was just in Saddle Brook last week :bleh:
I'm quite far away from the filipino community here in NJ which sucks majorly because not only am I losing my native language (I cant speak tagalog very well anymore!), but I also havent visited the mother country in ages and I dont really have that many filipino friends here at all. Actually, I prolly only have one. Good grief... I seriously need to get in touch with my native side! And I really miss the food. lol :)

Fort Lee sits at the entrance of George Washington bridge before crossing to New York.
Essex is not that far out (from Ft. Lee) as long as you have a car to get around.
For Filipinos who work in New York but can't stand living there, either due to congestion, noise, or for safety reasons, generally move to NJ or Connecticut as alternative places. I think there are more NJ Pexers out there. Just need to dig 'em out.

I found NJ boring k'se masyadong tahimik. Been to the girlie clubs like Hots22 and Stilletto pero bawal ang alcoholic drinks. Parang weird manood ng girls dancing tapos coke ang iniinom. I like Atlantic City though, sasakay lang ako sa bus doon sa may station sa Lodi sa umaga, tapos balik din sa hapon.
I've driven around a lot from NJ reaching Niagara falls, Woodbury outlet, Point Pleasant Beach, Atlantic City, DC, at siempre pa Manhattan. Namimili rin kami ng Pinoy foods sa Jersey City, sa Clifton at sa Bergenfield. Garden State Park and Bergen Mall ang madalas naming puntahan. Kaya lang masyadong mahal ang rent-a-car diyan compared dito. Like when I rented a Safari van when we went to Niagara Falls, they charged me $110/day. And when we went to Six Flags, I rented an Intrepid at $55/day, tapos sarado naman 'yung park dahil reserve daw 'yung araw na iyon para sa mga pupils ng certain school, hayun sa Point Pleasant tuloy kami nakarating.

i guess, you just got tired of it huh :rolleyes:

Jan 1, 2002, 01:00 PM
it's okay. i mean i don't think i would want to live anywhere else.
as for that hiking stuff? uhmm...i'm not really the hiking/camping type of person. so that's definitely out of the plus!
nyc...i don't know, it's not a big deal to me that's all. i exhausted my excitement a long time ago.
i guess what i need to do is hibernate for like a good 6 months to a year and then go out. maybe i'll have a different perspective. who knows! or maybe i'll go to miami or something. i just love miami! woohoo!!!
so how bout you. i guess you like going to nyc and pa.
eagle_eye
Jan 1, 2002, 05:48 PM
miami? heard there are tons of old people there :lol:
retirement capital, or so they say :teehee:
never been to miami yet, had fun at the theme parks of orlando though
:cool:
just been here for less than a year, still doin lots of exploring on what US has to offer:D
LOVE the outdoors: hiking and camping, will be trying out some winter sports, come this winter. Ever been snowbaording?
would be darn cool to try that out soon.
as for NYC, it just has lots of things to offer, that is for gimmick and stuffs:verycool:
know any cool clubs/bars around our area?
m'saia
Jan 3, 2002, 09:31 AM
okay, orlando is for like family vacations, to lay back, blah blah blah. if you want to party, go to miami. i'm telling you man, miami is like another city that doesn't sleep. go to south beach in particular. i love it! i'm gonna go back again this year. i stayed at this place where they had an open bar for the guests. my friends and i would hit the open bar first and then roll out. cheap date!
nyc--it's not a big deal to me anymore. i guess cos it's right there and i've been hanging out there for as long as i can remember. so going out lately feels like same crap different day.
i tried snowboarding before and i haven't got the patience for it. maybe i'll try it again this year. my friends are all leaving for colorado this weekend for a week to go skiing/snowboarding. they suk big time!!
as for cool bars/clubs around this area? uhmmm...i don't really hang out here. you can try going to hoboken. they have nice bars there. you can also try new brunswick--it's mostly a college town so wherever there are college kids, there's going to be bars. just watch out for guys walking and peeing at the same time. ugh!! wait isn't there one in woodbridge on rt 1 no? it's tejas and they have poor billy's i think? i've never been to poor billy's but i heard they have cheap drinks.

Good day to you! I'm so glad there is a site such as
PEX wherein we can reach fellow countrymen, like
yourself, from other places like the U.S...
My name is Ralph and I am into the distribution
business food nutrition/supplements. I wish to expand
my busines sto the U.S. And it is in this regard that
I would like to inquire from you if you or somebody
you know might be interested to be a dealer of
herbal-based supplements that addresses frigidity,
libido problems, impotence, sexual dysfunction, etc.,
in your area?
Unlike pharmaceuticals (that cater to these
problems/dysfunctions) which redirect nitric oxide in
your body and may have long-term side-effects, our

I have a Michigan license that expired last Feb 2004. I am going to NJ in a month and am planning on renewing/transferring licenses there. Given that my previous license has already expired, do I need to go through the written and road tests again?
p.s. I don't have a Phil license at the moment. LTO tells me I have to take both tests to obtain one.
Ayoko na sana mag-test ulit :D

Moving from Another State
If you have moved to New Jersey from another state where you were a licensed driver, you need to purchase an examination permit within 60 days of becoming a New Jersey resident (or before the expiration of your out-of-state license, whichever comes first).
Procedure to transfer your Basic Automobile License
You must purchase a permit for each class of vehicle you will be operating. U.S citizens, Green Card holders or a passport with an I-551 stamp may go to a MVC Agency to acquire an examination permit. Customers presenting any other foreign or INS identification documents must go to Regional Service Center.
You will need to bring your out-of-state license, acceptable proof of age and identification and address, and proof of Social Security (or exemption).
After purchasing the permit, visit any Driver Testing Center (DTC) to take a vision test, knowledge test*, and possibly a road test**.
After passing the required tests, the DTC will advise you on how to obtain a permanent license. (If under 18 you will be issued a provisional drivers license for 1 year)
The out-of-state license must be surrendered at the agency upon receipt of a valid New Jersey license.
*Effective May 22, 2003 the knowledge test may be waived for any person eighteen (18) years of age or older possessing a valid, non-provisional and non–GDL drivers license issued by any of the fifty (50) United States, and the District of Columbia.
** If the out-of-state license is valid, the road test may be waived.

Young Professionals to hold event highlighting Filipinos in Politics and Public Service
New York - Filipino Americans have twice the opportunity for political excitement this election year. With Philippine and United States Presidential elections in 2004, the role of politics in our lives and community has received unusual attention. To tackle some of the day's issues, Collaborative Opportunities for Raising Empowerment, Inc. (CORE) will be hosting a speaker panel at Lighthouse International (111 East 59th Street, NYC) on October 8th highlighting professionals who have made an impact through public service. CORE will focus attention on harnessing the individual successes of these professionals toward collective empowerment.
Politics affect us, whether we like it, hate it, or are simply apathetic toward it. Historically, political recognition has eluded Asian American groups despite their noteworthy academic, entrepreneurial, and professional achievements. Organizations like the Asian Pacific American Voters Alliance (APAVA) and its member organizations are changing that. These organizations are trying to promote "an informed and active Asian America that is involved in the civic life of this country."
Involvement is important, indeed. "When Filipino Americans are active in politics - learn about issues, become citizens, exercise their right to vote, write and call our policymakers about important issues - we are sending the message that Filipino Americans are an important part of the American society and that our views and concerns deserve to be considered by our policymakers and community," says Irene B. Bueno, Co-founder and Principal of the Nueva Vista Group LLC. "When we are not active in politics, we are sending the message that we are not important and that what we say and what we care about does not matter. We want to have our voices heard particularly on issues of great concern to our community - civil rights, Filipino World War II veterans equity, immigration fairness, and many other issues. Until we are engaged in politics on a larger scale it will be difficult for our voices to be heard by policymakers and American society." Irene is one of the featured panelists at CORE's third Speaker Series event on October 8th. She will be joined by Jean Lobell, and Glenn D. Magpantay. Tristan Loanzon will moderate.
Through the experiences shared by the panel, CORE hopes to emphasize the importance of community involvement and the power that one can have to make a difference, especially during this election year. "This [event] is a great opportunity for the Young Professionals to get inspired and motivated," says Jess Villarina, Chair of CORE. "Sharing success stories by great leaders in the civil and public services will help achieve self-empowerment. CORE is excited to be kicking off these types of high impact events, such as the Speaker Series. This is one of many ways to give back to our community."
For more information regarding this upcoming event, or other CORE programs, please contact Abigail Christine Veneracion at abbycv@yahoo.com or Janette Lechica at lechic1011@aol.com.

Below is the announcement.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Dear Friends,
I am writing to invite you to attend a presentation by ANCOP Foundation (USA) Inc., which is supporting the work of Gawad Kalinga (GK) in the Philippines and other Third World countries. Gawad Kalinga is a multisectoral partnership initiative that is transforming poverty-stricken areas in the Philippines into vibrant, empowered communities. GK has built up an impressive record in the Philippines by employing an integrated, holistic and sustainable approach to poverty alleviation encompassing shelter and site development, health, education, livelihood and community empowerment.
The ANCOP/Gawad Kalinga presentation will take place at the UNIDO Office in New York (1 UN Plaza, DC1-1110) on 30 August 20 04 from 12:15 to 1:15 p.m. to be presented by ANCOP Directors, Sonny Aguiling and Roly Balanza.
Those of you who have long wanted to do something about the poverty in our country now have a chance to learn more about an initiative that has been working well. I can say this without any qualification because I have seen a GK project in Payatas, Quezon City and was quite impressed with what volunteerism, caring and sharing have managed to do for a poverty-stricken community in our country.
If you are attending, it would be appreciated if you could please get in touch with Joy Genio (963-6887; Genio@un.org) so that proper arrangements can be done accordingly.
I look forward to seeing you all there.
FAHSI launches conversational Tagalog course
Young professionals, students reclaim culture via language
NEW YORK --- Beginning on Sept. 14, the Filipino American Human Services, Inc. (FAHSI) will offer a 12-week conversational Tagalog
course at the Philippine Center in Manhattan. The class will meet twice a week on Tuesday and Thursday nights, from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30
p.m.
The course will provide college students, recent graduates, and young professionals lessons on conversational Tagalog, covering the basic rules of grammar, verbs, and common vocabulary. In addition, there will be discussions on the history, culture, and business practices of Filipinos.
Isang magandang proyekto ito ng FAHSI. Matagal nang sabik ang publikong Pilipino, Amerikano at iba pang lahi dito sa New York na
matuto ng Tagalog, stated Consul General Cecilia B. Rebong. Learning our language is a key to better understanding and appreciating Filipino culture, mindset, and way of life. Our
commendations to FAHSI and Mr. Luis Francia. We hope that many will take advantage of this opportunity.
Former Tagalog student, Lara Manjares, said: I still use what I have learned from that class today. We learned a lot about the Filipino language, culture and each other's experiences as a Filipino American.
NYU professor and author, Luis H. Francia, will teach the conversational Tagalog course using both Tagalog textbooks and multimedia presentations.
Luis is author of the semi-autobiographical Eye of the Fish: A Personal Archipelago (Kaya Press, 2001), and co-editor of Vestiges
of War: The Philippine-American War and the Aftermath of an Imperial Dream 1899-1999 (New York University Press, 2002).
His latest poetry collection Museum of Absences is due out this October. Currently, Luis teaches Pilipino Language and Culture at
New York University's Asian Pacific American (APA) Studies Program.
Classes will meet at the Philippine Center located at 556 Fifth Avenue (between 45th and 46th streets). Registration is $400/adults
and $300/students, with valid student ID. Enrollment is limited, and applicants are encouraged to sign up early. Registration will be taken on a first come, first serve basis.
FAHSI is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization established to meet the social service needs of the Filipino American community in New
York. FAHSI currently offers after-school and summer youth programs, seniors programs, basic computer skills training, immigration seminars, weekly discussion groups, and other cultural and educational programs.
