It is always an advantage and never a disadvantage. Being active in school organizations and/or activities usually would result in your effectiveness as a leader. It would also reflect on how much you care or how aware are you on the events and issues that take place around you. Student orgs are like “mini-organizations” in your school. When you graduate and apply for work, the things and activities you did or join back in school would be an extra-advantage with the other applicants.

Meaningful extra-curricular activities are almost always an advantage. Potential employers have little to look at as far as your attitude and work ethic -- grades don't mean much, except for how studious you can be.
Between a A-grade student with nothing else outside of studies, and a B student who's a contributor to the school paper, an officer in an org and a volunteer / part-time social worker -- who do you think has more potential as an employee candidate?
On the other hand, engaging in too much of them can be time-consuming, and may divert your attention away from your actual studies.
Try to strike a balance between the two.

Being active in extracurricular activities is a great advantage for you. But make sure you're actively participating and not just paying your membership dues. You will meet so many interesting people this way (and increase your networking base which is very, very important). Taking on leadership roles will enhance your leadership skills, interpersonal skills, communication skills, management/coordinating experience and lots more. The skills mentioned above are sought after by employers. And remember to have fun! :)
