View Full Version : Which is better, being practical or academic credentials?

Hi! Just wana ask, what if your grades are kinda average, like a gpa of 3 or a just a little above that, some sort of extra-curriculars but not that impressive, but you are really practical and analytical in the way you think and approach problems (which is relevant to the field that you want to enter to), would that do for companies to notice you?
Do companies check out what grades you got for major subjects or they just look at the gpa?

Reverse the question. If you were to hire a person that you didn't know -- would you consider a person with a 3 gpa, few extra-curricular activities (so they don't really distract him from his grades)?
He says he's analytical and practical. How about the other applicants? Aren't they analytical too? Are they're grades better? He says he's practical and analytical, but how do you know that he really is analytical and practical in approaching his problems? And what is his definition of "analytical" and "practical"?
That would depend on the level of competition for the job right?
BTW, your grades only matter in the first 5 years of employment. Its your job performance that counts later on. My grades were never stellar, but I'd like to think I'm doin alright.

I agree with Adroth. An employer doesn't have any clue who the applicant is or what he has been doing or has done (except for referrals or "under the table" arrangements).
An applicant can be a sweet talker, decent and professional-looking, etc., but that's just the cover of a book .
Employers need some sort of a "proof" of your abilities and capabilities, and our grades in school provide that especially if you recently graduated.
Ang tip ko lang, ace their entrance exam, and the company will notice you right away.
And once you get hired, that's the time to show them how analytical and practical you are. :)
