well, some people see it as a fun thing, like gambling. for others, it's a serious business. i've been investing since i was 14, under my dad's name though. before you put money in to it, why don't you try those fantasy stock trading games online first (I think yahoo still has it. check at http://finance.yahoo.com)? there's a lot of work that goes into it but if you're an average day trader, you just buy and sell when you feel the time is right.

I don't know where you guys are but here in North America, you just sign up at companies like E-trade (discount web broker). I think you need a chequing account to do that and I'm not sure if it has an age requirement. If you're not trading within your country's exchange, you should be aware of the taxation rules for your gains/losses.

ashleyddr, at first, stocks are very complicated. But it’s okay, because you won’t learn everything in one month. My advice to you is to read first as much as you can. Anyway, this is how I started:

I started to check the stock listings in the papers everyday. I picked a couple of stocks, and try to observe how it’s price change everyday. Then I made my own database on Microsoft Excel. I record the prices, and made out some graphs. Then I discovered some internet sites where I can check out its history through charts or graphs See its most recent high and low and see how much you could have earned if you bought on the recent low and sold it on its recent high. Then, I discovered more sites that thought me almost everything about the stock market.

To know more about the stock market, check out this thread:

first of all, ashleyddr, because you're only 17, you'll only be allowed to open an stockbrokerage account under your name with the consent of your guardian; your guardian will sign the account opening forms with you. The SEC requires that you be of legal age (18) before you're allowed to trade.

it's really good that you want to learn about investing at an early age. i suggest that you start reading on the subject, and check out the public galleries of the philippine stock exchange at ortigas or at ayala. there are people who hang out there regularly, and, if you ask them nicely, they can show you the basics. :)

it will seem very confusing at first, but eventually you'll get the hang of it ... have fun. :D

quarklion, nasa gitna. the pse offices are located in between the east and west towers of the pse centre. there are two entrances, on each side of the theatre. i think the entrance to the public gallery and the library is the one on the west tower side. kung mali, you can always ask the guard. :D

quarklion, I used to hang-out there in the Viewing Gallery of the PSE Center - Tektite. I just moved this week to our off-site office in Greenhills, but I do plan to go back there from time-to-time. know all the people there, and you can send me a PM if you plan to go.
