Yoshi... ibig sabihin hindi ka natakot dun sa HALIMAW? yung long hair na ang panget ng ngipin na laging umuungol and tumitili.... pati sounds kinikilabutan ako....

tama bang dinadasalan nila si nora aunor dun?

Yoshi

imogen: Hindi ako natakot sa halimaw. The only horror "person" na kinatakutan ko si Freddie Krueger lang. Nakakatakot yung mala-ampalayang face niya. :D

Rumor had it na talagang minulto yung set nila. That I'm sure, but I don't know about the Nora part.

tama bang buhayin ang thread na to... hehehe

yoshi: i think what imogen meant dun sa "dinasalan si nora" dun is kasi si nora kunyari yung mom ni lotlot dun na namatay (although she didn't appear in the movie, picture nya lang) tapos may scene dun na dinadasalan nila yung picture ni nora kasi baka "pa-syam" nya hehehe...

the movie was entitled Halimaw. it had two episodes the first one Komiks was with Ian de Leon directed by his dad Christopher de Leon. the second was Banga with Liza Lorena & Lotlot de Leon directed by Mario O'Hara. It was one of the entries in the 1986 MMFF where Liza Lorena won the Best Actress award for this film.
The movie was produced by Nora Aunor's newly revived NCV Films. it was in the films' trailer where they showed Matet looking inside the banga and said "takot ako, eh!" which eventually became the catch pharase for the movie.

Yes, to this day Matet says that people go to her and say "Takot ako," remember Sweet was making her say it when she was being interviewed after her wedding?

Hi Luha :)

This movie won 3rd Best Picture last 1986 from Metro
manila film festival (there was no 1st best picture
and no 2nd best picture).

The other winners were:
Mario O'Hara for Best Director (Halimaw)
Mario O'hara for Best Actor (Halimaw)
Liza Lorena for Best Actress (Halimaw)
Chris Ad Castillo for Best Supporting Actor (Bagets Gang)
Maritess Gutierrez for Best Supporting Actress (Halimaw)

twas pretty scary, not bec. of the plot but more bec of the film's texture & color (kasi nga luma na) w/c made the film creepier & scarier. other good horror classics are :

itim- i like the scene of tommy abuel being approached by alive saints during his dream...

tiyanak- yung habulan ni lotlot & yung tiyanak tapos sinabunutan sya sa kisame

shake rattle & roll 1
ano pa ba...

That's utter bull. Halimaw sa Banga isn't all that frightening, but it's a very well made short film. The acting, the cinematography is excellent, especially for a horror film--it has plenty of atmosphere, and a creeping sense of dread. The gigantic statues of saints are eerie.

There's a subtext of tension between Lotlot de Leon and her stepmother, played by Liza Lorena; Mario O'Hara played her father (he won best actor for that).

Scriptwriter Frank Rivera based it on lower Filipino mythology. Tingting Cojuangco doesn't know what she's talking about (the first segment, however, was inspired by an "A-ha!" music video).

The ending SPOILERS is memorable: a voiceover tells us that this is the opening battle between the forces of Hell and of Heaven. It struck an ominous note, and suggested that there was more behind all this than meets the eye.

Noel Vera
Nov 14, 2004, 12:27 PM
Clarification: I don't mean what Amazing said was bull, it's true Halimaw only got 3rd Best Picture because Tingting & her fellow idiots didn't think anyone deserved better. What's bull is their reasoning--that the films were copycats of Western films.

Ignoramuses.

Actually, yes. It scared the hell out of me. Uso pa naman nung little kid ako yung these huge ceramic bangas as home decor, and when my parents would take me to other houses that had them, takot na takot talaga ako. I kept expecting a monster to crawl out.

That jar cost three thousand pesos--almost as much as their monster makeup, which cost 5,000 pesos.

Big jars are always frightening, I think. They look old, and you never know what's in them, exactly. Maybe dead cockroaches, maybe not. :D

^ Oo nga eh! Everytime I complained, my mom would always say, "Ssshh, mahal yan. Baka marinig nung may-ari..." Hehe. Good thing they went out of style. I don't think they're particularly elegant anyhow, but this movie turned me off them completely. :hiya:

I didn't know about the MMFF brouhaha (although I'm not surprised--they're not exactly famous for their credibility). So, which movies won 1st and 2nd Best Pic that year?

Mapanood nga ito ulit, to see for myself if it's well-made, like you said. I just have this vague memory of the cheesy halimaw (5K-worth pala) make-up and Lot-Lot screaming. If it frightens the bejesus out of me, an adult, again, now that would be scary.

Noel Vera
Nov 17, 2004, 02:55 PM
There were no first or second best picture winners that year. They thought the entries were that bad (idiots).

The makeup and special effects were cheesy, but the script is well-written, the cinematography fluid, the lighting eerie, and the acting excellent--more so than is usual for a horror film.

Very cute siya.

(After this film, hindi ko na nakita si Matet kasi wala na ako sa 'Pinas)

Noel Vera

Not all that scary, but the horror sequences are well done and very low-key.

What's interesting is the story behind the horror, the tension between Liza Lorena and Lotlot, and between Lorena and O'Hara, who plays the father.

Mali yatang iyong may 3rd best picture pero walang first at second. Marunong ba silang magbilang? Siyempre, kung mayroong 3rd best, ibig sabihin may 1st at 2nd. Ang i-engot naman ng mga judges.

Kung ayaw nilang maybigay ng iba pa, then declare it as the Best Picture, at sabihing walang qualified na 2nd and 3rd best pictures, tapos.

Eh hindi eh. Hayan tuloy, yung humusga sa festival, sila ang hinusgahang kulang ng talino!

I don't think the halimaw is important, and frankly, it's a disappointment to actually get a clear look at it. But the story between daughter Lotlot, stepmother Liza Lorena and father Mario O'Hara is terrific, and the story beyond that--a war between heaven and hell, of which this was to be the opening battle--is great.

The original Patayin sa Sindak stars Susan Roces and is directed by Celso Ad. Castillo--now that was a scary film.

I was able to watch this when I was in grade school (remember Sari-saring Sine in ch.2) and it really did scare me. Like the others, it gave me nightmares. This worsened my 'talukbong nights,' where I would just cover myself up with my blanket every night when all the lights are turned off. To make it worse, we also had that kind of jar during those times and my blanket was thicker than usual (the Ilokano blanket?) so I always wake up drenched in perspiration.

Anyways, I'm not quite sure if I'll get scared again when I watch this movie now.

I'll admit it: Patayin sa Sindak si Barbara is possibly the most frightening Filipino film I know, and I've seen some--not many, but some. But Halimaw sa Banga I think is more moving, because there's a complicated knot of emotion struggling between Lotlot, Liza, and Mario O.

Plus it's really a glimpse, a quick one of a bigger canvas: a war between the angels in heaven and the angels in hell. That glimpse is scary all by itself.
