View Full Version : Leno, Letterman, or O'Brien?

Who is the King of talk? Personally, I like Conan O' Brien best... he can have me in stitches just make putting a silly smirk on his face... and you can't get that from Leno or Letterman. But Jay and David, they're great too. So what do you think?

Jay Leno!!! I mean, the guy's face is already funny with or without a smirk! =) Seriously though, I believe Johnny Carson made the right choice. Jay's got a lot of everything...I find Conan O' Brien realllly funny too, as well as David Letterman. But there's just something about Leno that takes away all the day's stress. Must be the chin.
BTW, his autobiography, "Leading with my chin," is pretty good reading. Try and pick it up sometime.

Leno is the most popular and he gets the best guests, but in terms of humor, no one beats Conan. He even jokes about the idea that his show gets more unknown guests then Jay. Letterman's cool but I think abc sucks, so i tend not to watch him. Also, he hits below the belt more than both Leno and Conan combined.
Kaboom!

Well, for me Johnny Carson is still the master of talk shows.
Right now, Jay Leno cracks me up the most. They are very creative in that show. Letterman is on CBS by the way not ABC, and they have a new guy following Letterman now (same slot against Conan) who had his own show in the Comedy Channel and it's actually not bad.
ABC has this "Politically Incorrect" show and a replay of "Oprah" on the same time slots along with Nightline.
I guess it's been a fad in the states as Rosie Odonnel, Howie Mandel and a host of others also have their own take shows.
Too bad we only get Jay/Conan (cable), Oprah (Ch23), and Dave (UHF) in the Phil.
Peace.

My vote definitely goes to Jay Leno. Conan doesn't crack me up so much. And I don't consider myself a stiff (my friends will tell you that). Maybe it's his happy face. I also like the fact that he gets such good guests.

David Letterman gets my vote. His spontaneous reactions on stage is one trick of the trade he has perfected.܃Ü

Oh, yeah! Letterman's on CBS! Sorry nalang, Kaboom! :o . I guess I can watch him now, pero I still think he hits below the belt more than Conan and Jay.

Conan has the funniest talk show I've ever seen. Not only does he crack me up, but the things they do on that show are funny as hell. Have you guys ever seen the dog (...for me to poop on...) or the masturbating bear? C'mon now, that show is the funniest by far...in my opinion. The show is funny because they mock themselves. They always joke about how much the show sucks, but it just adds to the humor of the show, I think. But anyways, the other talk shows are funny, but I think this one takes the cake, by far.

Letterman for me; then Leno. I'm sorry to Conan lovers but I don't find his show funny. Letterman and Leno do.
About Letterman hitting below the belt more than the others. Well, true. But the guy also knows when to show his human side, e.g. Christopher Reeve interview. :)

Leno is the best,
he comes up with the really funny and insulting jokes.
Conan is also cool because he does really morbid jokes.

I like David Letterman's "Stupid Human Tricks," NYC Cab Driver jokes and the two Pakistanis (or Indians).
Jay Leno-- "Beyondo" Did I get the name right? It's that smart guy with the big head.
I dig Conan O'Brien's "In the Year 2000" segment. Also that dog "for me to pooop on!"
My choice? It used to Letterman, then I shifted to Conan. But Leno is consistently funny.

airhare,
beyondo is jay's segment with his head(just his head) answering the questions and flying all over the place. the one with the smart guy with the big hed, that's mr. brain.
but folks, i like jay leno the best, not only does he have the best guests, he also has the best humor. i like letterman, pero its hard to see his show din eh, and i really like jay. i try watching conan from time to time, pero i don't get him e. he's annoying. jay's best segemnts....headlines and jay walking...the segments where you see how dumb the americans can be.
Mister Dean

I'm a Leno fan through and through! Those "Headlines" really make me laugh, and his writers are good. I'm sorry, but I don't find Letterman's Top 10 lists even remotely funny. Conan, on the other hand, is the halfway man between these two. My problem with Conan is that he comes across as too... I dunno... trying hard, is that the word? Plus, Andy Richter annoys me! (Luckily, he's leaving Conan for a solo career in comedy.) One thing going for Conan is that talking dog, what's his name? He's funny!

i remember one thing i like about conan's show, the silly antics he does with the politicians and famous people's faces. you know? the skit wherein he cuts out the mouths and has a stand-in blab nonsense. i like that, pero not always.
mister dean,
i agree, andy richter sucks.
max weinberg sucks too, good thing he's touring with the boss.

i love letterman. his jokes are witty, not crass (like some of leno's). and the bit with mujibur and sirajul? too much!
conan comes in second for me. he's not afraid to look like a total loser sometimes. and andy's hilarious.

CONAN FOREVER!!!
I love his jokes (yes, they literally hit below the belt!). I know they're sometimes (always?) disgusting...that's what I love about them!!! He and Andy are so hilarious (they do NOT suck) and I'm sorry to hear that Andy's leaving. Andy and Conan are so straight-faced with monotonous voices (MULDER?!) so it's all the more surprising to see "Clinton" with a fake mouth, summer house (?) Ally McBeal, etc. And their self-deprecating humor adds to their appeal.
The Rock
Sep 15, 1999, 11:42 PM
The Rock says that Leno and Conan are the best. Leno has Iron Jay, Beyondo and Mr. Brain as well as his Jaywalking segments. While conan has In The Year 2000, Triumph The Insult Comic Dog, and the pictures with moving mouths. These guys are naturally funny. Jay is considered as one of the nicest guys in Showbiz, that's why everybody hugs him when they guest on his show. Conan used to date Lisa Kudrow and used to co-produce and write for The Simpsons. How's that for funny?

Conan O' Brien is better than the 2. Why? Because he's the only one who has balls to let Metal acts perform on his show. Unlike the other late night hosts who hire the Fagstreet Boys to come on over and shake their asses to the crowd and make tennieboppers swoon.

You have to understand the situation.
When Letterman was still in NBC he had a job similar to Conan. This timeslot appeals mostly to the college crowd or 20 somethings. When he moved to CBS, he had an earlier timeslot which is a totally different crowd.
Being versatile, Letterman changed his style a little to suit better suit the audience. He was much wilder than Conan then. Now Conan is a hit.
I like Leno but he cant make you laugh during interviews. Nada. corny hirit nya.
Unlike Letterman and now also Conan, isang tingin lang nila sa audience matatawa na yung crowd. Ibang klase.
Leno is Ok but Letterman is King.
The prince? Oh that's Conan.

funny talaga yung headlines!
anyway conan o'brien is more well liked because his style suits us and also he is very youthful...
Sa monologue masyado akong nahahabaan sa monologue ni Jay Leno...20 minutes halos.
The good thing about Conan is that he has a lot of help from his back up crew like Andy Richter and Max Weinberg.
I like Kevin Eubanks though.

Woooo! Hands down, Conan O'Brien is the best!
At first I thought his voice was really annoying, but when I got past that and actually watched the show, I found myself laughing out loud. And I did, without fail, each and every time from then on. When the show was still on NBC, Conan was my quick fix for when I was feeling down. There's nothing like mindless boobery to life your spirits! :D (Sadly, can't do that anymore... since it's only on during weekends at CNBC. :( )
I like watching Jay Leno because his guests are much bigger stars. He's also very encouraging towards his guests (except maybe Richard Simmons) but his sense of humor is, yeah, corny. And he repeats himself too much.
As for David Letterman, I thought he was annoying the first time I watched his show (this was BEFORE Conan!). I never got over that annoyance. *shrug*
Just my 2 cents. :)
P.S. My favorite Conan character gag is Stacy, Andy's sister. :D

flyderman: Haha! I really look forward to their gags - how about that Gaseous Weenie and Pimpbot 5000, eh? :D (I think the bear is really disgusting, though...)
Yup, Conan mentioned a few times that he wrote some episodes of the Simpsons (like the one with the monorail, and the one where Bart falls in love with his butch babysitter ;)) and that he was a sketch writer for Saturday Night Live. Well, some fans might like to know that he graduated from Harvard magna cum laude. Smart guy - no wonder he comes up with such quick and clever quips! :D
It's not just his witticisms and wisecracks. I really find it funny when he just makes his faces - like when a guest says something disparaging, he suddenly freezes, his face turns expressionless and he casts his eyes downwards (or they become shifty), all in silence while the audience is laughing. Or when he wants to depict sadness, he zigzags his finger in a "single tear rolling down cheek" gesture. LOL!
As for the other people in his show, I like them a lot also. I'm going to miss Andy when he leaves... he DOES make pretty funny side comments. He must feel pretty frustrated just being a late night talk show sidekick though, I hope he finds greener pastures. :( Max is great, when he plays his drums, he's *always* smiling! You get the feeling he's all happy and that he really enjoys what he's doing. He's also such a good sport when Andy and Conan pick on him, hehe. Joel (the announcer) is funny in the running gags they make of him saying very dark and morbid things in his strong, vibrant voice... and then breaks down and goes insane.
I just love the whole Late Night with Conan O'Brien shindig! Thanks for switching networks, Letterman! ;)

Intelligent humor. Okay not that intelligent, but really gosh-darn hilarious!

top 10 reasons the late show rules in my book
10. uma.. oprah! oprah.. uma! (ah, priceless geekiness)
9. nobody has a penchant for self-depreciation like letterman does
8. stupid human tricks
7. two words: dave's mom
6. "it was dave letterman who made the world a sarcastic place"
5. mujibur and sirajul
4. the riot that is when richard simmons, bill cosby, bob dole, alec baldwin etc are on
3. any man who can call the president of the united states 'tubby' and have his wife come on IS cool!
2. any man who can get drew barrymore to flash him and julia roberts to hit on him on national tv is sexy!
1. just gotta love the irreverent smart-alek with the gap-toothed smile and the bad toupee!
yup, he's the king alright. the next johnny carson. conan's hecka funny too! not a lot of big-time guests, but he sure IS a comic genius. the next david letterman. kilborn's a massive sleeping-pill next to him. and jay leno is, well.. jay leno. he has his moments, but they aren't enough to keep me tuned in.

When it comes to the popularity of the guests, though...Jay Leno's got it. They seem to have great guests every night (of course, hindi na ngayon every night...I hate Sky Cable).

moonberry: I have this feeling that you don't like Craig Kilborn too much. He ain't bad really. I think he's the almost perfect (he has to work on his comedic timing I think) guy to come after Dave. He's the, dare I say, "anti-Dave". You know, none of the biting remarks to guests, no self deprecation whatsoever, little "silly segments", no big band to back him up... I think that's a refreshing change since almost every single comedian (Conan, Norm McDonald, Drew Carey, etc) started imitating Dave's "ironic act". Craig's great with guests too. I hated him at first too since I always figured Jon Stewart would be perfect for The Late Late Show... but his (Craig's) recent shows really ain't half bad.
I really can't figure out why Jay Leno is considered funny. The funniest thing about his show is the Headlines... and he didn't have anything to do with that. People just send newspaper bloopers to the show (tee-hee)... I could hardly call that comedic genius. Aside from that, when I get to watch The Tonight Show... I can't help but say, "Hey! I've seen that before in some other show!" to some of the segments. Check out the recent episodes where he gets kids to cook on his show or the time when bikers performed stunts on his studio's backlots- I've see this stuff before on the Dave show eons ago. I also sorta noticed that some of his guests tend to ignore him while they're on- he's a terrible interviewer. Pity since he's in LA and therefore gets more "interesting" guests.
I agree with the guy who said Letterman is a softy. Most people see him as this rude guy... but all he is is someone who won't take crap from anybody. He won't say on air that a certain movie is nice just coz the actor came to the show to promote it (Jay described Battlefield Earth as "great work"... sheesh!) Dave is at his best when guests are there not to promote anything... they're just there to talk... like with Bill Cosby, Charles Grodin, Al Roker. His heart shows when people like Christopher Reeves and Lance Armstrong (the guy who won the Tour de France after beating testicular cancer) show up... Dave will never serve up bull to the audience. Same with his comedy segments. The really funny stuff comes when Dave starts interacting with ordinary people on the streets or the audience. I do admit that his Top 10's can get to be a drag most of the time (he'll be the first to admit that)... but once in a while they come up with a total gem- and it will make it all worth it. Dave's still the king of late night TV.

Jay is pretty funny, even just from his looks. Ever wonder why Dave never got acquired by NBC to do the "Tonight Show." Most people there who also lined up to see the show came from every corner of the US and all they'd say is that Letterman is too low class ... but then, Jay got jerked off by Angelina Jolie last week when she was a guest. Anyways, I was fortunate enough to finally get in as one of the studio audience on last Friday's taping. It was cool experience ... I'll book another ticket on the next 3 months! LOL!

If "low class" means "won't kiss up to anybody" then it's all good. Besides, I can't imagine lowlifes finding Dave's cerebral and subtle humor funny. Jay Leno got The Tonight Show 'coz he had media savvy. The guy's a hack job... Dennis Miller and Dana Carvey were pretty vocal about Leno getting ideas from other people's (particularly theirs) material. Oh... did you know that Leno got his start by appearing regularly in Dave's old NBC show (the one Conan has now)? Everything worked out fine anyway... Dave gets a whole theater for himself in Broadway (wow... "low class", man) no less and Leno still considers Letterman as a friend.

I don't think you can really compare these two. Jay Leno has a more wholesome, made-for-Hollywood kind of humor, while Conan's humor is a younger, more edgy, New York-ish, sarcastic type of humor. I think it just depends on what kind of humor you find funnier. They cater to different types of audience.

agree with ira. but personally, conan.

I also agree with Ira, but I'll have to go for Jay Leno. I think the blame is on O'Brien's writers, I mean, no matter how great he is at delivering his jokes, they are sometimes so lame.

Jay Leno... mas nakaka-relate ako sa kanya kahit Amerikano siya.
Si Conan naman nagbo-border na sa green ang kanyang humor.

I'll go for Conan kasi katulad ng sinabi ng isa diyan, mas edgy and it hits the spot. Hindi paligoy ligoy.

well Jay is funny kasi he makes fun of other people...
si Conan naman pinapahiya nya sarili nya to make other ppl laugh...
hay basta ok naman silang dalawa eh... pero pag nakita mo yung MILK ad ni Conan hahahahah shyet matatawa kayo sobra... it just shows kung gaano kababa self-esteem nya! hahaha!!!

well they're both funny, and i agree with dark knight and ira's comments, but i like conan more, siguro kasi odd rin ang humor ko, and that's a standing joke in his show how he's a really big dufus--kawawa na funny! http://www.pinoyexchange.com/lol.gif And it's also interesting to know, Conan's got milk? ads are the most requested or most viewed or most favorite...basta ganun! Fave ko yung schoolboy ad niya, definitely Conan!

Yah i agree!! David Letterman is the funniest of them all!! What I like about Conan is you can sense his anxiety in the show but he makes it funny in a way!! He is able to laugh at himself and indulges the crowd to laugh with him!!

Personally, I prefer Conan... And I prefer Letterman over Leno anyday. Jay Leno was sort of ok before, but I love Conan O'Brien's humor! I guess it's because he ain't ashamed of him being a wuss. And his skits are funny too! Not to mention, mas kewl ang musical guests ni Conan. Leno kasi, caters to the humor of Hollywood/Los Angeles life, which is mababaw and superficial. In my opinion, mas may substance ang humor ni Conan (and Letterman too) na East Coast type.

David Letterman's the best...although marami na siyang pinahiyang tao, ang galing niyang magpatawa. This is a no-contest; Jay and Conan are both dull.

dave shempre... pero maganda yung mga "patawa" segments ni conan like: "in the year 2000", "staring contest", "live" interviews with clinton (BWAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAH!!!), and WHAT IF THE MADE IT!
and late night characters like triumph the insult comic (HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH! PEBORITS KO ITOH!), preperation h raymond (ISA PAH! LOL!), and the masturbating bear (BWHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!)
miss ko na talaga si andy richter.

I disagree that Conan is dull...he is very very funny! galeng niya magdala ng show...he keeps on putting himself down and that makes him funny...galeng din niya mag-adlib during his interviews...has anyone seen him with that young animal guy? sobrang lafftrip siya!
"shouldn't you be home watching MTV? oh wait, you're too young for that, go watch VH1!"
"ok, you put down a poisonous snake on my desk and you give me TONGS?!"
haha! i also miss the Masturbating Bear, Bulletproof Legs, Preparation H, and the staring contest (w/c was brought back by Charlie Sheen 2 weeks ago...it was Conan's first since Andy left)...
i don't like Dave's humor...i don't understand him...pang-oldies siguro...Conan's humor is aimed kasi at younger ppl

I think Conan is totally funnier because he can make anything funny. Even if his guests are boring he can make it humorous. PLUS he's got some really demented characters like the masturbating bear, the bulletproof legs guy, triumph. :teehee:
Jay Leno is a close second because he's really good at making fun of politicians and has lots of funny alter-egos. (Beyondo, Iron Jay, etc) For the record, i think both of them are way funnier than Letterman, who's funny himself but he just doesn't compare. :winknudge:

I am definitely a Conan fan! (So does that mean I'm a weirdo?) I love his self-deprecating humos, his crazy skits, and the comedians who guest on his show. My most memorable episode would be when Rebecca Romaijn-Stamos appeared on the show and kissed Conan. Man, he sure went crazy!
Jay Leno has slow comedy days and it shows. Last night was a good example.

Conan! I love his "Be Happy" skits. And the Talking Heads. And the one where he ad libs a song and pisses somebody off.
But I like Letterman better because of the Campaign 2000 thingy (brought to you by Crystal Clear Party Ice, Liquid Snake, and the Compost Maker).

i just wish NBC Asia would televise them everynight, not only on weekend...
conan is more of the joker type, coz his guest also participate in insulting him (esp. with his big heads, anyone saw the guesting
of arnold schwarzaneggar(sp ?), Triple H)
i love that guy! sayang wala na si andy!

conan.
i could probably last a whole year's worth of jay leno's show, and not laugh. he's not funny at all.
but of course, mr. letterman is still the gauge among the current guys. i understand when some of the guests say they love him, but if jay's guests tell that to him..... ewwww....

I like Conan better. I like his slapstick humor, his skits, his who-the-hell? guests, his former sidekick Andy Richter, his drummer Max Wienberg and how he makes fun of him. heck, everything!
if you guys want to see how Mr. T laughs (T Secrets) or other odd stuff, then Conan is the show to watch.
Letterman ain't that bad, he's like a mainstream Conan. Leno does not make me laugh but he does have famous guests.
