View Full Version : ARE LOCAL TV SITCOMS REALLY FUNNY?

Do you really think the situation comedies (sitcoms) produced by local tv stations are really funny? If not, what is wrong? When was the last time you really laughed at a good tv comedy made here? If you can't remember when ... then what went wrong? What is going all wrong?

Yep, Pinoy sitcoms have deteriorated. Why? Ratings. Producers of these rubbish sitcoms think that Pinoy viewers are a bunch of imbeciles. As long as they can rack up ratings and earn money, they couldn't care less about the quality. How can one explain the presence of Charlene Gonzales in a sitcom? This lady can't act s$#t. Comedy is much more difficult than tearjerkers and they insert these actors/actresses. Look at those old 70s sitcoms. The reason they are classics is because they do have real comedians there who get the job done. Can you find a pretty face in sitcoms such as 'Tang Tarang Tang', 'John en Marsha', 'Ginang Milyonarya', 'Cafeteria Aroma', 'Iskul Bukol' etc. No. What they have are talented comedians who make ppl cry out of laughter with their genius. Compare that with 'Palibhasa Lalake' who have 'cuties' such as Goma, the Guapings, and all those unfunny retards. Thank god I don't have to put up with those 'nakakabobo' tv shows anymore.

I don't find the current TV sitcoms funny at all. The storylines are bland, and the jokes have already been done a zillion times in the past. I think the last TV sitcom which I really enjoyed was....shucks, I forgot na the title! Basta that one with Leo Martinez, Anjo Yllana, Janno Gibbs, Donita, and Gelli de Belen. Ewan ko kung bakit ako tawang-tawa doon. But I guess the best Pinoy TV sitcom really is John en Marsha. Too bad wala na siya ngayon. :(

Hindi na, Sheilalibs. Hindi na kasi kami nagsusulat ng kumpare kong Joey Reyes, eh. Bwa-ha-ha-ha!
Seriously, I think the problem with a pool of writers is the whole sitcom becomes a string of gags, walang kuwento. The sequences are practically independent of each other, walang build-up, wala ring pay-off, you don't pretty much care. I think it's gotten to the point TV sets are open only out of habit, while the ones supposed to be watching it are sending 'text' messages.

zaphne, "Ober Da Bakod" yata yun sinasabi mo....funny nga yon http://www.pinoyexchange.com/lol.gif
most of the local sitcoms today, corny na....unlike before, "palibhasa, lalake" was kinda funny, pati "abangan ang susunod na kabanata".....even "home along da riles", in its initial years was funny.....pero ngayon, halos wala ng nakakatawa....
"Oki Doki Dok" is pretty funny....kaso isa lang nakakatawa....si Roderick Paulate as Dixon....other then him, wala ng ibang nakakatawa sa "oki doki dok"....

"Are foreign sitcoms really THAT funny?"
Sometimes it amazes me how language can have a great effect on how funny a certain joke is, or in this case, a sitcom. I mean, kung si babalu ba or si redford white ang nag-drop ng mga lines na dina-drop ng mga favorite comedians/comediennes nyo, matatawa pa ba kayo? That's the thing, some jokes are just meant to be "funnier" in english...OR if dropped by a foreign Comedian.

I miss iskul bukol. I was just a kid then but still i laughed my lungs out, also TODAS. NOw, sitcoms just try to be funny but they are just so flat and corny.
What's funny is you cant distinguish one from the other cos they all look alike, they sound alike, and they deliver punch lines alike (especially in Ch 2). If you have a paper in CommII, dont dare choose to analyze Filipino sitcoms in the 90s. you need not analyze, they all have slapstick, green humor, sexist, and racial jokes.
I think plot is very essential. Never mind the delivery of jokes and punchlines, facial expressions can compensate, what i'm more interested is how the characters develop into funny yet witty situations. I think 143 (Vic, Rosanna, and AiAi) is pretty much okay.

I find "Kool ka Lang" funny enough compared with other Pinoy sitcoms. Sometimes, though, the writers of this show (and of other shows as well) still have to resort to slapstick humor and that never-ending "NYEH!" to complete a gag. That I find really corny.

Generally,NO! Most of the new comedy sitcoms nowadays just seem to rely on the "toilet" or "green" type of humor that the likes of Willy Revillame has become famous or infamous for. Not only do most of these shows do not have any plots at all, many of the actors/actresses who star in these shows cannot even act! I guess the TV stations are relying more on the drawing power of these "pretty faces" until such time these so-called stars lose their popular appeal.
Anyway, among the "old" sitcoms I remember watching with enjoyment are "John en Marsha", the earlier seasons of Palibahasa Lalaki (it was Gloria Romero's character of Tita Minerva which was the funniest, followed by Joey Marquez' character)and last but not least, "Abangan ang Susunod na Kabanata".

OK, I think the thread is quite clear here.
Pero why do they say that sitcoms like PUWEDENG-PUWEDE ... or all those really barf-bag hour tortures RATE?
Sa tingin nyo, talaga kayang nagre-rate ang sitcoms na yan kung talaga namang hindi natatawa?
If so ... SINO ANG NATATAWA?

The old ones were funny, especially Ober Da Bakod, Palibhasa Lalake and Abangan ang Susunod na Kabanata. Oh yeah, John and Marsha and UFO! (Sitcom ba UFO?)
The current sitcoms are really lame - most of them are just banking on the stars, not on the script. Although at times I find 143 and Kool Ka Lang funny. :) My 2 cents...

Shielalibs, the reason why Pwedeng Pwede rates high is because filipinos are very loyal. channel two as a whole demands loyalty from its audience and i think they pretty much succeeded 'cos who would ever watch Pwedeng Pwede? they thought kicking Kris Aquino out would make it more bearable :D ! HAH!
Besides, if you dont have cable and you are a tv freak, you have less shows to choose. when does it air ba? Thursday?

The original "Palibhasa Lalake" starring (the late) Miguel Rodriguez, Joey Marquez and Richard Gomez was kinda funny, but then later on they added so many characters na walang ginawa kundi magpa-cute and mag-endorse ng T-shirts, it became pretty lame that I stopped watching it.
"Buddy and Sol" was quite ok too.
And of course the classic sitcoms from the 70's were good.
Now, paramihan na lang yata ng pa-cute stars ang labanan. I don't watch any sitcom on local television anymore.

I think local sitcoms are not funny ... because they are so immoral.
I am just too glad that a show like PALIBHASA LALAKE went off the air because the jokes there were so vulgar and polluting the minds of viewers.
Even that show with Rossanna Roces is not funny. How can they allow a woman like her in television? Is this the sort of role model we want for women in our culture?
I don't know ... These are just my humble observations.

I agree. They shouldn't have just TERMINATED Ms. Aquino's character ... they should have just put her to sleep.
Naman, dumaldal na lang siya, ano? Hindi pa ba siya nagkaroon ng epiphany after the reverberating success of her attempt at comedy ... that old time classic TASYA PANTASYA ... with no less than Alvin "He Hurt Me Patrimonio" as her leading man?!

Is Angelic Light from a convent or something?
Anyway, TV sitcoms are not funny anymore. Gone are the days when you want to laugh and watch a sitcom...
One more thing i hate about tv sitcoms is their sets! makeshifts are not very convinceable. Even painted walls of a neighborhood is lame.
Imagine, in Home Along Da Riles, your house doesnt have any walls and is very open to all elements and you wonder why they still have furniture? Even squatters have knobs and padlocks to secure their houses.
I like 143's set though. it looks natural. all it needs is proper lighting and larger set so one can have a car pass by. :)
why cant we have like a coffee shop like central perk or an apartment like in FRIENDS.

i liked the original palibhasa lalake, okay ka fairy ko, abangan ang susunod na kabanata, ober da bakod, john and marsha. ang lahat ng iyan hindi ko pinalalagpas, every week i always made it a point to watch them.
i've been out of the country for the past 6 years, so during vacations to the philippines lang ako may chance to watch pinoy comedy. ang pinaka-gusto ko is 143. kakatuwa si rosanna, ai ai, and of course si vic sotto. iyong ibang bagong comedy shows could not really be called comedy kasi hindi naman nakakatawa. :(

not!
problem is, local tv is run by network executives who mostly focus on the business and not the creative aspects of the program ...
take "tropang trumpo" for example ... it was good ... so much so that my former officemates & i (including our boss) waited for the show every week & watched it together especially the "battle of the brainless" part ... then the advertisers multiplied & they had to s-t-r-e-t-c-h the show & the jokes got stale ...
same with bubble gang & brod pete's "dating doon" ...
pity that no one's brave enough these days to revive "sic o'clock news" :(
u have to admit though, dolphy rules ... in that trailer of "daddy o, baby o" where he had to refuse the nun's offer to look at his injured member, the joke's old-old-old but the way he delivered "never mind" was in such perfect timing i couldn't help chuckling (no, i didn't roll on the floor laughing ... oa na 'yun) :)

O sige let's say they're guwapo but I don't think they're better known as the country's comedians. Parang when you think of 'em, hindi as comedian ang magreregister sa utak mo. I'm talking about true blue comedians...wala ako talagang maisip na may face value...unlike sa hollywood, there are tons of hottie comedians like ashton kutcher, sean william scott, brendan fraser, etc.
