Since we're talking about what movies you've seen this year that have blown you away, I was just wondering what your all-time favorite movies are? Name as many as you wish. :)

Batang Uliran,

The only movies I'm familiar with are Star Wars, Godfather 1 and 2, and Bridge on the River Kwai. What year were the others shown? I don't think I've ever heard of them (which probably means I've missed out on some great movies ;))

Ada:

Ran and Seven Samurai are two of the best if not the best works of Japanese director Akira Kurosawa. Ran is a great epic adaptation of King Lear to the samurai environment and Seven Samurai is a take of 7 ronin who defend a small village - the movie on which the Magnificent Seven was based.

Chinatown is an early 1970s film considered the best of the film noir genre. It is gripping tale directed by Roman Polanski and featured great performances by Jack Nicholson - who played Detective Jake Gittes - and Faye Dunaway as the leads.

Au Revoir Les Enfants is a Louis Malle classic that is a heart-wrenching tale about a Catholic boarding school hiding 3 jewish boys in Nazi occupied France.

My list of favorite movies would include --

Opportunity Knocks
Before Sunrise
The Star Wars series
Face Off
My Best Friend's Wedding
Major League

Kaboom!

Here are some of my all time favs:

Drama: ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO'S NEST/DEAD POET'S SOCIETY
I was forced to read the Ken Kessey book in HS and this is one movie that is as good or better than the book.
I think Robin Williams should have won the Oscar not in Goodwill Hunting but in Dead Poets.

Romance: CASABLANCA/WHEN HARRY MET SALLY
I have the Casablanca video and I've watched it about 15 times or so. WHMS was the first to really focus on good witty dialogue and it's a classic in my book.

Comedy: THE NAKED GUN/BEVERLY HILLS COP
Sequels are usually not as good as the originals and these two originals made me laugh the most.

Special mention to "Hoosiers", the best basketball movie every made.

Peace.

best movies for me are godfather 1 and 2, one flew over the cuckoo's nest, the usual suspects.

i have repeatedly watched a few good men however. i really like that movie, especially jack nicholson's scene at the witness stand.

romance : cutting edge and before sunrise.

I love brainless films. (DISCLAIMER, haha) This isn't in order either.
1. A FEW GOOD MEN. Cruise, Nicholson, Moore. Luckily, they were in the movie.
2. MY BEST FRIEND'S WEDDING. Roberts, Everett, Diaz, Mulroney. Hilarious. Downright funny. Soundtrack rocks.
3. ROBIN HOOD: MEN IN TIGHTS. Elwes, Brooks, lotsa cameos. The funniest Brooks film for me (some will prefer "Spaceballs," but it didn't click with me). "I forgot to tell you about my chastity belt. It's an Everlast!"
4. COURAGE UNDER FIRE. Ryan, Washington, Phillips, Jr. Love Meg Ryan, and she can actually do drama.
5. WHILE YOU WERE SLEEPING. Bullock, Pullman. I believe in love at second sight.
6. SPEED. Reeves, Bullock. Whattarush!
7. HEARTS AND SOULS. Downey, Jr., Grodin. Robert Downey Jr is the king. I also believe in the afterlife.
8. ONLY YOU. Downey, Jr., Tomei. I also believe in soulmates.
9. SISTER ACT. Goldberg, Smith. I memorized the movie.
10. THE FIRST WIVES' CLUB. Midler, Hawn, Keaton. Revenge is good.

Mister Dean: Actually I though Meg Ryan's turn in Courage Under Fire proved that she could not do drama!

My personal favorites:

Drama:

Dead Poet's Society (Robin Williams, Ethan Hawke) -- One of those movies that can change your life forever.

With Honors (Brendan Fraser, Joe Pesci, Moira Kelly) -- See reason above.

Heaven and Earth (Tommy Lee Jones) -- The Vietnam war from a different perspective.

Romance:

First Knight (Sean Connery, Richard Gere, Julia Ormond) -- Most romantic movie I've seen in my life. I was torn between King Arthur (Connery) and Lancelot (Gere). Didn't know whose side to take. Beautifully done and great script to boot. Plus I have to admit that chivalry is oh so divine. ;)

My Bestfriend's Wedding -- I only saw it this year and now I know what the fuss is all about. Julia Roberts is so adorable even if she's the "bad" person here. And I liked the ending. It wouldn't have made me feel good if whatshisface ended up with Julia.

Action:

Face Off (John Travolta, Nicholas Cage) -- John Woo's cam shots are super! He sure knows when to use slow-mo to emphasize a scene. Great action flick.

The Rock (Sean Connery, Nicholas Cage, Ed Harris) -- Non-stop action. I was at the edge of my seat from beginning to end. Almost fell too. ;)

The Usual Suspects (Kevin Spacey) -- You don't know anything until the last scene. It just blows you away.

Comedy:

Naked Gun 2 1/2 (Leslie Nielsen) -- Brainless but still funny.

Musical:

Sound of Music (Julie Andrews): I'll bet that there isn't anyone here who hasn't seen this one -- and a million times at that.

Anime:

Ninja Scroll -- Got me partially hooked into Jap cartoons. Great animation, ultra-cool storyline.

For me, a great movie should have the following ingredients: a good script and excellent cinematography. My favorites include...not in order...

Before Sunrise (for the great script)
Gone with the Wind
Dial M for Murder (for the wit and originality)
Good Will Hunting and As Good As It Gets (for the psychological contents)
Psycho (the classic, for the sheer originality of it)
Casablanca
El Cid (for the heroic end)
First Wives Club (this movie is just plain energizing specially for women who had been dumped)
Scent of a woman (that Pacino integrity speech is the best!)
Face Off and The Rock (the only two action movies I really appreciated)
Dead Poets Society (for the script...carpe diem! seize the day!)
Great Expectations (for the cinematography)

Just to name a few...

Aragorn:

From your member name in this forum, I bet you can't wait for the new movie version of the Fellowship of the Ring which is due to start filming next month and is slated for release sometime next year. Casted already are Ian McKellan as Gandalf and Elijah Wood as Frodo. The Two Towers and Return of the King are scheduled for beyond 2000 release. No info though yet as to who will play your namesake in the movie!

Some other comments on your post - Kurosawa's move that was based on Macbeth is entitled Throne of Blood. I'm not sure also why you didn't mention Godfather 2 in addition to Godfather 1. I consider both movies to be a continuum and a strong argument could be made for the second movie as being the better one. I'm not sure if you've seen the original Sabrina but I thought the Harrison Ford version paled in comparison to the original. Julia Ormond does not even come close to Audrey Hepburn! Yeah, maybe Bogie may have been too old but I thought the original one was a classic and the newer version ok.

Thanks for the title of Kurosawa's work! It slipped my mind...

I've heard rumors that there was work going on for a movie version of the Tolkien trilogy, but it's the first time I've had it confirmed (yours is a reliable source, isn't it?). I previously read it from a gaming magazine. Personally, I'd love to see Alec Baldwin (his eyes and beard would fit Aragorn nicely) play the part of my tokayo...
Thanks for the info!

batang uliran

Aragorn:

Yup, it is definitely confirmed. In fact there is already a considerable buzz over it since it is supposed to be a "definitive" version of the books. The latest book reprints of the Lord of the Rings trilogy already feature an ad for the movie on the back page!

Jacob
Aug 9, 1999, 09:55 PM
And if I may add info on the Lord Of The Rings movie...

The film will be directed by Peter Jackson (tama ba? Yung director ng Heavenly Creatures at Frighteners) and will be shot on location in New Zealand. I, too, am excited about this TRILOGY!

How about the next episodes of the SW prequels? Boba Fett anyone?

Do any of you know where i can rent any of Kurosawa's samurai films? Preferably in BF Paranaque or Alabang. Oh yeah, aside from 7 samurai, what were his other samurai films?

Mavi
Aug 9, 1999, 11:45 PM
I'm not so sure as to where you can get a hold of Kurosawa's film but as you sound like an anime enthusiast, you might like to check out a shop called Anime. It's along President's avenue in BF Homes. If you're going in the direction of BF (from Sucat), it should be on the right side.

Kurosawa produced many films and those of the samurai genre that I can remember offhand include:

Seven Samurai
Ran
Rashomon
Hidden Fortress
Throne of Blood
Yojimbo
Kagemusha
Sanjuro

Of interest, the plot of Hidden Fortress was the basis for the story of Star Wars as acknowledged by George Lucas himself. Yojimbo was the basis for the Bruce Willis flick Last Man Standing and Seven Samurai was of course the basis for the Magnificent Seven.

If you are into samurai movies, then you should try to watch the Samurai trilogy starring the great Toshiro Mifune and directed by Hiroshi Inagaki. This is a trilogy that is based on the life of the legendary samurai Miyamoto Musashi. Another great samurai film is Kihachi Okamoto's The Sword of Doom also starring Mifune as a great samurai warrior.

I have these movies on either LD or DVD and sadly don't know where they can be rented in the Philippines. I am still in the US so am out of touch with regard to where these films can be located.

Video TakeOut in Makati Cinema Square has a somewhat adequate collection of Kurosawa and samurai films (along with European art films, Hong Kong flicks, etc.).
Among the titles I saw there were Ran, The Seven Samurai, Throne Of Blood, Yojimbo, and some samurai films not directed by Kurosawa. I can't remember the title pero it's about the 47 ronins and it was made in the 60s. Hope I was of help.

I forgot the title of this movie... It stars Sharone Stone and I also forgot the other guy. In this movie, stone sentenced for death and this guy, a fresh lawyer, tried to lower her sentence, if not to free her. Stone really killed a son of a distinguished political person for a reason not intentional. However, the real intention is to steal something and I believe that she was under the influence of drugs. I like the story. Do you know the title?

The top 10 movies that I would watch over and over again...(In random order) :p

*Never Been Kissed--I mean, wow, Josie risked further humiliation by standing in the pitcher's mound, not sure whether Sam would come. That's true love and that takes a lotta guts.
*The Princess Bride--who wouldn't love this storybook story, and who wouldn't fall for the man in black, who answers to his love's every whim with "As you Wish?"
*Beauty and the Beast
*Glory
*Cry Freedom
*While You Were Sleeping
*Casper (Christina Ricci, Devon Sawa)--gotta love Jordan Hill's song "Remember Me This Way" and Casper telling Kat, "Can I Keep You?" EEEEE!
*Never Ending Story I-- this movie, although done in the 80's, I believe had very stunning visual effects, superb characters.
Parts 2 and 3 sucked.
*Last of the Mohicans
*Legends of the Fall
*Titanic
and more...
*Disney's Tarzan
*Disney's Hercules (obvious ba na mahilig ako sa cartoons?)
*Casablanca
*Gone With the Wind
*Wizard of Oz :p

I'm not very hard to please, actually. Here's my list:

Notting Hill (finest romantic comedy ever made)
Titanic (the grand production itself, IMO makes up for its quite cheesy script)
The Sixth Sense (talk about suspense! this got me jumping)
True Lies (my favorite action comedy)
Forrest Gump (Tom Hanks' best)
American Beauty (hands down Best Picture of 1999, although The Sixth Sense just had more commercial appeal, I guess)
Beauty and the Beast (best cartoon)
The Matrix (coolest action flick)
My Best Friend's Wedding (I have this thing for Julia Roberts...)
Good Will Hunting (great script)

I have always been a Tagalog film lover, no matter what. These are my personal favorites, in no particular order:

Kung Mangarap Ka't Magising (1977 Mike de Leon) - Christopher de leon and Hilda Koronel. This is a simple love story with great and immortal Theme song "Joey's Theme". I have loved Baguio because of this movie.

Burlesk Queen (1977 Celso Ad Castillo )- Vilma Santos and Rolly Quizon. Beautifully acted and superb direction. I love the last dance of Vilma.

KisapMata (1983 Mike de Leon) -this is a truly classic example of simple and yet intriguing story of lust!

High School Circa '65 (1978 -Mrayo J. de los Reyes) Oh how fun it is to be in high School. this film introduced Roderick Paulate into the gay roles, he was great though!

Himala (1982 Ismael Bernal) A very silent yet memorable film on faith. Superb acting by Nora Aunor

Ina Ka ng Anak Mo (1981 Lino Brocka) Showed how great actresses Lolita Rdriguez and Nora Aunor are.

Relasyon (1982 Ishmael Bernal) Great acting by Christopher de leon and a grandslam acting award for Vilma Santos.

Kakabakaba Ka Ba (Mike de Leon) talk about satrirical film with great music sung by Boyet de Leon (Tuloy-Tuloy pa rin) and Bigyan Mo po Kami (spoof of ama Namin and sung by Nanette Inventor)

Nagalit ang Buwan sa Haba ng Gabi -Danny Zialcita's best film and known for kilometric lines with no script at all.

Patayin Mo Sa Sindak si Barbara (Celso Ad Castillo) Susan Roces, Rosanna Ortiz and Beth Manlongat. Well as a child, we were fascinated by the exorcist syndrome and this remains to be my best horror film.

American Movies:

Chariots of Fire
Gandhi
Out of Africa
Schindler's List
The Deer Hunter
Passage to India

Others;

Rashomon (Japan)
Cinema Paradiso (Italy)
The Horse Thief (china)

SuperGirl

starring Pinky Montilla, Walter Navarro(SLN), Odette Kahn, Barbra Perez, Mildred Ortega and Racquel Montesa. Kakatuwa itong panoorin kasi ginawa ito nung kasikatan nang Wonder Woman around mid 70's. Ilang Ulit ko nang pinanood ito mula nung akoy bata and this film never lost the touch of being funny, kind of a trivia. I taped this film when it was shown on televeision sometime late 70's and had the BETAMAX copy, though transferred now to VHS format, since then. My friends love borrowing this tape, a classic PINOY SUPERHERO. WE remember how Supergirl fought against the GIANT PALAKA, Zombies and the reyna ng Kadiliman. HAHAHAHAHA up to this time.
