I think the greatest flaw of the movie is miscasting. Hindi lang sina Anne Curtis at Chubi del Rosario ang miscast, pati sina Zsa Zsa Padilla at Christopher de Leon. Ewan ko pero parang walang magic ang chemistry nila e. Remember their short-lived TV sitcom?

But I must admit interesting yung movie. Pero since si Michael de Mesa and director, na dati ring director ng OKA TOKAT!, hindi kaya magkapareho lang ng story yung dalawa. I don't know if you guys watch OKA TOKAT!, but at present, ganun din ang takbo ng story--na may naanakan ang demonyo.

Sana nga hindi. Pero I might also watch it.

ive seen it, and the only redeeming quality about the movie is cherie gils impressive acting (of course). zsa zsa wasnt that bad, but ann curtis absolutely reeked.

i still do recommend the movie though, just for the heck of it.

this was a really disappointing movie. mahilig rin ako sa horror movies, and i had mistakenly thought that this would be one of the rare Pinoy horror films that would eventually be "classics"---NOT!!! ni hindi siya umabot sa kalingkingan ng paborito kong Pinoy horror: Patayin sa Sindak si Barbara.

1. daming flaws sa storyline--- hindi mo tuloy ma-achieve suspension of disbelief

2. isang style of directing lang alam ni Micheal de Mesa. too bad, kasi first job niya raw ito: what can i say, he did an "average" to "below average job"... puro juxtaposition lang ata ang technique na alam niya.

3. hiniram pa nila sa iba-ibang movie iyong certain scenes: HINDI MAGANDA IYON SAKA NAKAKAINIS HA!

"Ika-13 Kapitulo" (The 13th Chapter) is about the end of the world as brought on by the unholy union between an earthly woman and Satan Himself. "Haven't I heard this one before?" you may ask, and you probably have, several times--"Rosemary's Baby," "The Omen," "End of Days," not to mention huge helpings of "The Devil's Advocate." If you're asking yourself "why should I watch this latest version if I've seen it before?" I have to admit I was still asking the same question myself when I left the theater.

It starts off promisingly enough: beautiful young child (played by Anne Curtis) lives with her beautiful, glamorously wealthy mother and father (played by Christopher De Leon and Zsa Zsa Padilla). De Leon is your everyday, average owner of a powerful television station, while Padilla is a former ballad singer turned stay-at-home housewife--the very picture, in other words, of moral purity and family virtue, Viva Films style. Not a very realistic picture, mind you, but then Viva Films isn't really known for realism but for its comprehensive, tirelessly detailed portrait of the Manila upperclass--from the newest fine-dining restaurants and nightclubs, to the last word in men and women's fashionwear, to the latest issue of "Architectural Digest" in De Leon's hand (giving rise to two stray thoughts in my mind: 1) I never knew TV executives were interested in architecture, and 2) I never knew TV executives can read).

This portrait of perfection, however, is quickly threatened. Curtis possesses not-very-virtuous powers, such as making flower vases fly and doors slam shut (next thing you know, she'll be doing really nasty things, like opening stuck windows or cleaning dirty dishes). Enter the Devil, in the guise of Albert Martinez as a tycoon taking over the station. He brings in a programming executive (played by Cherie Gil in a fright wig), who used to be De Leon's girlfriend (probably had a different hairdo then). Martinez has installed a largish satellite dish, then talks about controlling the world through media (though how this is going to be done with the use of an oversized receiver dish and no sign at all of a transmitter isn't made very clear). He proceeds to try and seduce Padilla, revealing to her that it was HE who came to her on her honeymoon night, not her husband, and that Curtis is HIS child, not De Leon's. Then Gil attempts to seduce De Leon, revealing in her turn that she committed suicide the day De Leon married Padilla, and that she sold her soul to take revenge on De Leon. Confused? Let's just say I had a devil of a time trying to unravel the plot, much less believe in the whole, unwieldy thing.

The climax takes place (for no very clear reason, except that they spent money to build it) at said satellite dish installation. Plenty of pyrotechnics and a few not-very-well-done digital effects are used; Good and Evil grapple, sincerely if not very convincingly, in a titanic struggle. Guess who wins out in the end?

De Leon has been coasting on autopilot for years now, so it was a fine surprise to see him giving a fiercely gritty performance in Joel Lamangan's "Bulaklak ng Maynila" (Flower of Manila). In this film he's back on autopilot except towards the climax, where he uses a trusty shotgun to dispatch Satan-worshippers with John Woo-like aplomb (no mention of where he got the shotgun, how he learned to use it so expertly--or why didn't said worshippers arm themselves with similar weapons). Padilla as De Leon's wife is in her full drama-queen mode, complete with curled-up lips, tremulous chin, and perennially leaky eyes. Curtis as the demonic daughter seemed at first like an interesting casting choice--a way for director Michael De Mesa to make some kind of statement about "the banality of evil;" by film's end, however, she seems more banal than evil, a walking collection of cliches about devil children.

On the opposing team, Albert Martinez as Satan seems to be having the most fun of anyone in the film--but then, how can he not, playing The Prince of Darkness? Lit and shot from certain angles, he shows a truly diabolical demeanor, which is why it's so redundant (not to mention downright silly) when they finally bring out the monster makeup and give him bad skin, horns, huge cheekbones--the works. He's much scarier (not to mention more entertaining) without the prosthetics. Cherie Gil is a beautiful, stunningly talented actress who's been in too few movies--what evil possessed the hairdresser to give her that ridiculous Davy Crockett hairdo, complete with raccoon tail?

I like to boast--and who knows, it might even be true--that I can sit down to any part, beginning, middle, or end, of the film of any director and within two minutes tell whether or not said director knows how to edit or not. Actor-turned-filmmaker De Mesa (who is, incidentally, a tremendous actor, one of our very best) knows how to compose interesting images, but still has to learn how to edit--aside from uneven pacing, he has yet to achieve the kind of smooth cutting that, say, Tikoy Aguiluz, Celso Ad. Castillo, Mike De Leon, or Mario O'Hara demonstrate in their films.

This isn't a minor complaint: editing, as Stanley Kubrick once noted, is the one stage in filmmaking that is unique to the art--Kubrick even goes so far as to say filmmaking might be considered a way of producing film to edit. Editing is one of the easiest ways to create tension or suspense--witness how Ad. Castillo can make you jump out of your seat as often as he feels like it by means of the shock cut in "Patayin sa Sindak si Barbara" (Terrorize Barbara). Or how O'Hara can link military atrocities to supernatural evil, cutting from the image of one to the other with quicksilver ease in "Pangarap ng Puso" (Heart's Hope)--which, despite the title, is a far more disturbing horror film because its monsters are rooted in contemporary reality.

De Mesa is far from being a bad director--I just think he was saddled with a poorly thought-out script, and this being his first feature, he couldn't quite transcend the material. He just needs to learn how to tell a story coherently, with images rather than dialogue; beyond that, he needs to develop a style of his own (as oppose to lifting from--of all people!--Taylor Hackford); beyond that, he might want to think out his vision, what he ultimately wants to express in his films. Tall order for a first-time filmmaker, but it's been done before--here's hoping he does it as well, eventually. I must admit that considering this is De Mesa's debut I intended to write a kinder review--one that tactfully pointed out the flaws, or gently suggested ways of improvement--but something inside me screamed for knives with serrated edges. I couldn't help myself; you might say the result isn't my fault, not really--that the devil made me do it.

well, i just saw this movie the other night sa viva channel. grabe, halatang ginaya lang sa mga movies sa US. walang originality talaga ang mga filipino, pero maganda sana e, kase nakakatakot and pwede ngang mangyari yan, pero diba parang end of days and ano pa ba mga movies sa states na ang story e sa pagdating ng katapusan diba. ginaya lang, pero sayang yung mga magagaling na artista don sa movie, and baket nga ba si anne curtis ang pinaganap nung anak.. ayoko sya, mukha syang simpleng b*tch.:mad:
