View Full Version : Jobs in Media (TV/Print/Radio/Events)

Hi guys! I'm a Comm Arts Grad, Batch 2000 and I've had 3 jobs already. My first and my present jobs are both related to public relations. My job previous to this one was media-related and I enjoyed it a lot more than my job now. I was writer/producer for one of our cable channels.
I want to go back to that field because I'm BORED out of my mind with my present job. Is there anyone here who's in the field of media (TV, publishing, Radio, Events) who can tell us about their jobs, their work environments, salary range, and maybe help me in my quest for a media-related job? :looking:
Thanks! :beam:

well I work in a magazine. It's great, I love the job. I'm in-charge of fashion wich makes it all the more fun for me coz I love fashion. Creativity is very important in my job. I also write articles and do interviews. sooooo fun :p

Wow! Great job! I actually got wind of a publishing company looking for copywriters. I'm going to give it a try. Btw, I assume it's a women's magazine you work for? So, you're in charge of fashion spreads, shoots etc? How are the hours? How long do you stay in the office and how much time do you spend on field? Do you get freebies? :D

hi Kaoru_Himura
for what magazine? if you're in need of an events photographer please drop me a line :)

My mag is a bi-monthly mag. It's pretty new. Maybe you've heard of YOU mag. I'm in charge of clothes for shoots, which can get pretty tedious, but I have so much fun picking out clothes. It's the returning of clothes and inventory that can get tricky. I get freebies when I go to events, but of course you're there to represent the magazine so you have to be at your best. We meet for editing after we complete all assigned work. Hope that helps! ;)

Being in a media-related job is really a very exciting career….ako I’m in the advertising side naman…done several out of the line activities…events…shootings..etc…etc…quite exciting and fun *** lang I’m planning to find another job…although I’m enjoying what I’m doing, I don’t think it really pays off … I thought its ok to have a good job but I have realized that progress is way tooo far to reach in the company I’m in…well I think its time to look for another job…. :frustrated:

howell... my present job is my third also. :( non-media-related. :~(
my first job was a beat reporter in a private AM radio station, my second was a Customer Care Staff Assistant in a fixed-line Company, and now, ugh, never mind. i ended-up here because of the compensation. If not for practicality, i wouldn't have given up my first job.
 @ KuyaDanny pissed-off pa rin ako sa BM namin... :evil_lol:

I suggest she applies in GMA7. The training is better that ABSCBN and you don't have to pay the P1000 internship fee. Atska di sila gagawing alila sa GMA. MAganda din daw sa ABC5 kse talagang madami daw matutunan. ;)

Bea19, try logging in at jobsdb and jobstreet. There are events company in need of events handlers. Pag nagresign na ako dito sa job ko, apply ka. :) I work at an IT firm, marketing communications department which handles the many events (product launches, parties etc..) of the company. You also have to know how to write too because you'll be taking care of press releases and the company newsletter.

it doesn't confine you to just selling ad spots to prospective clients. you have to maintain the clients that you have by visiting them regularly, so mostly field work yun. you have to go to parties, events, etc. some people might find it fun, however, I just don't find it challenging enough. :)

Try applying, though, I'm not so sure if they're still hiring an ed. assistant. You should have at least 2 years of experience. The job openings were posted from the Classified Ads of PDI. Why don't you try calling them so as to be sure? Unfortunately, I don't know the trunk line. Good luck!

I'm planning of trying-out this certain opening for trainees for a radio station; in fact anytime today I'll be there to pass my resume'. But I just want to raise some queries:
1. How long would it usually last for one to be a trainee for a certain program/station?
2. How good is the pay? Benefits, if any?

 reybelde! whew! don't expect too much, k? being a trainee is hard. mostly, you are not entitled to everything they offer to a regular or even a probationary employee... sometimes they only give you allowance lang not salary talaga. of course, no benefits. and the company has an alternative to terminate you in an eyeblink if they don't like your performance... but the good side is being an excellent trainee, which i know u will be if ever, there's a big possibility that that station will absorb you then voila you will become a part of them. and besides given the fact that it so hard to find a job nowadays, the training you'll get will help you a lot if ever you'll decide to move in a different station that will give you better opportunities and compensations. so, weigh your options. gud luck!
 little_witch! i think abs-cbn publishing is looking for an editorial assistant. i am not sure though what magazine is in need of an EA. is mega the only mag you want to work with? you may also want to send your resume to summit publishing. it's in mandaluyong lang naman, malapit lang din. summit is producing a new magazine so they will need a talented and creative people such as yourself. gud luck sa job hunting.

I'm sorry I forgot to check this thread. ANyway, AnGeLJoLi , I thought I've sent you the requirements already, but anyway, you should be a MassCom/Comm Arts/Journ grad. Experience is not really necessary since we just hired 2 new EA and I think they're both fresh grads. You can just drop by at the main office in Pasong Tamo to give your resume. BTW, I'm a she.

Thanks for that tip though. I was just from that station I was talking about, and in fact I'm planning to pass another resume' for Radio 1 for RX 93.1. For now kahit allowance lang Ok lang sa akin, so I'm not expecting too much for the moment -- I'm just after the experience for now.
And another question: Hindi ba dyahe for a 23-yr-old to apply as student trainee for a radio station? (In case you wanna know more about me and why I'm asking this, I'm 23 and an undergrad from UP Manila -- graduating pa lang this April, but for this sem I have lots of free time since residency ako this sem -- no enroled subjects; sa 2nd sem pa ako mageenrol ng subjects) Kaya ko naitanong yan kasi in some instances when one seaks of "student trainees", merong age limit yan like you shouldn't be over 22 years old or something.

Hi! To those interested in a job as an editorial assistant, there's an opening for Working Woman. Kaya lang last day na ng test nila tomorrow (Friday, June 28).
You can just go there tomorrow for the copy test. The office is located at 3/F New Roasario Arcade 42 Ortigas Avenue Extension, Posario, Pasig. Look for Ms. Andrea. If ever, their phone nos. are 900-3504 or 628-4804 loc. 321.
I was supposed to apply kaya lang I can't be late for my work tomorrow. Di din ako pwedeng mag-absent. :)
Preference nila syempre babae ang maging Editorial Asst. and not more than 30 years old.

pikekoks: Address it to Kelly Vergel de Dios
GMA New and Public Affairs
GMA Network, Inc.
EDSA cor. Timog Avenue
Diliman, Quezon City
I gave my resume to her a couple of months ago, right after the ad came out. But I haven't heard from her. Sayang kasi before I took their copy test na and I passed. Kaya lang, nag-ABS na ako kasi ang tagal nila tumawag. Ayon... I'm still hoping to hear from her though.
blue_querubin: I don't think you should be a Masscom Grad to work in the Publishing world. But it is an advantage. I think basically, you have to have really good organizational skills and be good at time management because medyo hectic maging Editorial Asst. You also have to know how to write (depends on what kind of magazine...your writing style should suit their magazine) and you have to have a good grasp on grammar and have an eye for detail because you will be given things to edit as well.
To those who want the contact no/s of MEGA magazine:
The numbers are 6312859/6372701.
Address is 18/F Strata 100 Bldg., Emerald Avenue, Ortigas Center, Pasig City.

I'm sorry but in publishing industry, MassCom/Comm Arts/Journ grads are given more priority because they already have the know-how with the working environment in media than non-comm grad.
if you really want to work in the publishing industry, you should have at least an experience, say, articles published in magazines or newspaper.

Nope, kasi they're (MEGA, that is) gonna give you their standard resume, wherein you have to answer several questions. Parang interview na rin yung questionaire nila, dun nila i-babase if they're gonna grant you an interview or not.

hi little witch! i would suggest that you still try applying at summit. :) it's true that medyo strict sila sa standards but the experience is worth it. if they don't get you as a staff member, they may get you as a potential contributor/freelance writer. Not bad rin di ba? :)

Is it ok if I apply again for a different position in the SAME publishing company? You see, I applied for a certain job 3 wks ago via the net. I received an application acknowledgement telling me that they would contact me if I were shortlisted or to update my application status. Although I'm not sure if it's just an automatic reply that they have for those applying in the internet. Anyway, until now it's been 3 wks and I haven't heard from them if I were qualified for an interview or what. I saw an opening in the same company for a different job naman (this one seems a lot better), and I want to give it a try but I don't know if it's okay to do that. I really want to work in a publishing company.
Actually, events company gusto ko nga rin kaya lang it seems so limited and the competition is really tough. Baka may alam kayo dyan...ehem! ehem! ;)

jappsie: hi! :) I assume you're talking about Summit. Wala lang, i'd say go for it! I heard that they're pretty strict about selecting who will be included in the short list. If I were you, go to their office and submit your resume in person rather than online or look for someone, an insider, who can give it to someone who has the power to hire you. Mahirap talaga when you apply online, lalo na for a coveted publishing company job.
Good Luck!

Sayang ayaw mo sa MRT kasi ang Summit offices super lapit sa Boni station ng MRT. Pag bumaba ka doon, just cross the street at ayun na ang building!!!

Hi everyone,
Nice thread here! Actually, I've been exploring this possibility, yung having a creative job. I work in an IT company pero I'm thinking of having a sidejob (tipong raket hehehe) because my job is not that great. I wanted to pursue broadcasting --- either TV or radio whatever, so I pass my resume whenever...right now medyo trip ko yung sa voice dubbing. Do any of you guys know kung sino pwede kausapin sa gma7? I'm going to take a leave tomorrow from work and go to all tv stations in qc to talk sana to people. I like to try yung dubbing kasi, whether it's for radio or for tv...it really doesn't matter.
thanks! :p

Sa Probe Productions ako actually nag intern last year kaya lang nagkasakit ako sa sobrang layo e. KSe I dorm in taft tapos ang office nila is in a house in Sikatuna Village. Anyway, it was a great experience madami ka talgang matutunan kaya lang sobrang mapupuyat ka din. Call Yas Mapua sa Probe Annex Blg at 4359743. Ang you can ask for the requirements. Ako pinagawa ng essay kung bakit gusto ko sa Probe and those things tapos you have to pay a fee kse may ibibgay silang materials like ntbks and pens. Anyway sayang kung kelan madaming offers sa akin naka pag enroll na ako sa law skul. Anyway that's life! Goodluck in jobhunting!!!

hi i'm a java programmer but i hate my job and i'm seriously thinking of pursuing a career in media. ewan ko ba, but i really wanted to take up journalism or mass com but since MIS was so attractive then, that's the course i took. anyway, nagsisisi talaga ako kasi sobrang ayaw ko ng trabaho ko. though it pays a lot. ang swerte ko din pero hindi talaga to yung gusto ko.
anyway, i got a writing assignment from preview last july, to be included in this month's issue. sadly, the editor who gave me the assignment is moving to another magazine, i think, that's why she hasn't given me another writing job. well sana yun yung dahilan no! hehe.
i joined tweetums gonzales' writing workshop and it was really fun. it made me realize how much i really want to change my career because i'm so unhappy and i feel so stuck.
i want to be a researcher for one of the shows in channels 2 or 7 though i really don't know how to go about it. la akong contacts and i heard that that's the way people go about applying, i mean through contacts. tapos, i also heard that being a researcher is better than being a PA.
anyway, help lang in these matters. print or TV ok lang sa akin. i just need to get out of my job or i'll be forever stuck. haay.
thanks a lot.

Pero if you really want to be a researcher, tip ko talaga sayo, pumili ka ng papasukan, like PROBE Productions, or Lakbay, or some other show na talagang mag-iisip ka at yung talagang mag-ca-count sa resume. :)

ok sana ABC-5. Hinde pa ba sila lilipat ng location? sobra hirap kasi sa Nova. Sana somewhere in South naman..
try nyo sa website ng ABS-CBN, may nakita hiring dun, nag-pass na ko resume. btw, i'm an ECE grad.

what about ibc 13? or rpn 9?
c adrian aldaran, not sure with the last name basta A din start un. he was a news anchor at ibc every 4:30 pm tpos he moved to abs-cbn. at ***** field reporter na sya dun. mdami pa kaso i 4got their names, meron pa nga galing **** ng ibc tpos she moved to abc5 with same position as field reporter.
just a word of hope...
we could be the best that we could be anywhere we are. it doesn't have to be at a certain place to perform the best of us.
juz got that thought from the movie orange county, kc un guy he wants to study at Stanford University (usually the presidents and famous great persons *** ang nkakapagaral dun), cuz he wants to be a great writer. lahat ginawa nya pro di **** fate makapagenrol dun, until he met this one of the greatest writers and they chat for a moment. nabasa ng greatest writer un story na cnulat ng guy. the writer was impressed and he said, magaling na writer din un guy. so it shows that there's no problem ket san tyo mapunta, as long as we are doing our best and have faith and confidence on what we do.
juz another thought, i know some media practitioners from abs and gma na hndi **** **** ganun kagaling. u know. minsan kc palakasan n rin e. hehe
