1. welcoat - eman (intriguing twin-towers with JayR Reyes)
2. smb - devance (if his papers are in order)

4. coke - intal (with Telan as center, Coach Binky goes for upside)
5. air21 - jonas villanueva (Big J's pick. with Jason Castro foregoing this year's draft, the next prospect to eventually replace boss Wynne Arboleda)

IT’S THAT TIME AGAIN


Last season, rookies lorded the pro ball arena with most of the veterans undergoing a greater mission that would send our country back to the worldwide basketball stage.


This year, we expect more.


For sure these players will have a bit of “summoning sickness” if and when they get cast by their masters (coaches in layman’s terms). But as they learn to figure in the fight, they should become valuable attackers and defenders to help claim the win for their colors.


I miss playing Magic the Gathering.

As it stands, the Welcoat Dragons won 19 percent (7 wins 29 losses) of their games in the whole 2006-07 Season. Claiming second place is the Coca-Cola Tigers with 34 percent (14 wins 27 losses). The Sta. Lucia Realtors had 39 percent (17 wins 27 losses) while the Purefoods Giants carved a 44 percent win clip (18 wins 23 losses). Rounding the Top 10 are Air21 Express (21 wins 20 losses or 51%), Alaska Aces (22 wins 18 losses or 55%), Talk N’ Text Phonepals (26 wins 20 losses or 57%), San Miguel Beermen (31 wins 21 losses or 60%), Red Bull Barako (30 wins 17 losses or 64%), and the Baranggay Ginebra Kings (33 wins 16 losses or 67%).


Assuming that there are no trades (unrealistic actually), this will be the current state of the draft. The Draft will take place this August and as we prepare the coming of the next big stars, here is my mock draft… VERSION 1.


The 2007 PBA Mock Draft


1) Welcoat – Joe Devance: This team desperately needs size with Lao and Sta. Maria proving far from best in the starting center slot. This should be another ordeal for the Dragons that they will lose Alex Compton as his “import” status has expired. Devance, if his papers are authenticated, is PBA ready and he could deliver the goods for the Dragons.


2) Coke – Ken Bono: Here is another team that could seriously use size. The current UAAP MVP has improved a lot and his ability to hit those post shots could very much spell good things in their frontcourt. Ali Peek was their lone big guy in that team and it was a miracle he escaped serious wear and tear.


3) Sta. Lucia – Ryan Reyes: The loss of Alex Cabagnot proved vital in their quest to redeem “greatness” in their ballclub. While their size needs to be addressed, it seems leadership must be fixed in the guard spot. Reyes is a bulky but energetic guard capable of doing damage. The sophomore slump has weakened Dennis Miranda and we might also have a trade involving Paolo Mendoza and Marlou Aquino to some random team with salary space.


4) Purefoods – JR Quinahan: With Kerby Raymundo on loan and most of their frontline damaged, the Giants failed to advance past the Semis. I doubt if Quinahan can continue dominating the paint like in the PBL but Purefoods will definitely welcome him to the roster.


5) Air21 – JC Intal: The crack Ateneo guard will find the Express suitable for his style of play. Now that Sonny Jaworski is pacing their bench, expect his run and gun offense to shape around their high-leaping pouncers. They also missed a scoring presence when Gary David went down because of injury.


6) Alaska – Samigue Eman: If you saw what Tim Cone did to Sonny Thoss, expect the same treatment they’ll give to Eman. His big frame will be of use for the Aces now that they will have no Rosell Ellis to depend in the Philippine Cup. The Aces does not need guards right now but they do need projects that will develop.


7) TNT – Marvin Cruz: If the Philippine Team becomes successful (surely of course), then Jimmy Alapag’s stay with the team will further be missed. Cruz however, had a breakout season in the UAAP and in the PBL. He was also one of the main men that ruled the SEABA tourney.


8) San Miguel – Doug Kramer: His stock can go as high as number three but while there are a lot of talents yet to be taken; Kramer is a cinch if the Beermen finds his name still in the list. He has a PBA-ready body with the intention of scoring and stopping with tremendous magnitude. It’s also prerogative since the Beermen owns most of the Ateneo players in the PBA.


9) Red Bull – Yousif Aljamal: Talented but restrained in terms of recognition, Aljamal needs to move out of the shadows that Sam Ekwe bestowed onto him. This crafty forward can provide the scoring and also the dirty work that Yeng Guiao craves.


10) Ginebra – Ronjay Buenafe: I doubt if Ginebra will likely have this pick with all the trades they’ve undergone last season. Choosing Buenafe simply means that he is arguably the highest rated player aside from the initial 9. He is a Gary David clone from the Emilio Aquinaldo College and he has proven that he can score in loads in a given night.


As for Ginebra, the best thing they can do is find a big guy since they’re already loaded in the guard spots.


Rounding out the Top 25 (although only 20 will be picked), these are the players I think that could even push up in the standings, although most of them play the small spots. In a league overwhelmed with shooting guards, I believe the league can have more. (By the way, they are not in any order.)


11) Jojo Duncil – UST Shooting Guard that opted to turn pro after sparking a controversy.

12) Ryan Arana – Harbour and DLSU forward with intense scoring and defensive prowess.

13) Macky Escalona – Ateneo guard notorious for unloading momentum-killing baskets.

14) Jonas Villanueva – FEU spitfire that could have still play had not for the rebuilding phase.

15) Jeff Chan – FEU shooting sensation licensed to score in the dying moments.

16) Reed Juntilla – A longtime PBL scoring machine capable in scoring inside and outside.

17) Melvin Mamaclay – A former Adamson player and regional league journeyman that had controversy when he chose to play for the PBL rather than stay in the UAAP. (This was Salary versus Allowance issue.)

18) Derrick Hubalde – Older brother of Paolo and a former UST Tiger usually seen playing in the lower commercial and regional leagues.

19) Jeff Bombeo – A PBL and San Beda forward that played during the Ekwe-less years.

20) Kenneth Coyukang – A promising and youthful former JRU stalwart.

21) Khiel Misa – Perpetual and Henkel-Sista’s fireball hurling quarterback.

22) Joel Solis – Hapee-PCU’s scoring threat. Once part of the dreaded PCU squad led by then Rookie MVP Gabby Espinas.

23) Ramil Tagupa – Played and starred at Adamson where they had a string of near-Final Four finishes.

24) Francis Barcellano – Another FEU player that can light up the board with his heads-up plays.

25) Alex Angeles – Former San Beda quarterback responsible for dishing passes on Aljamal, Escobal, Menor, Ekwe, and the rest of the title-grabbing Lions.


Anyway this was at the time I have no idea on what the first round will look like, how many teams will not participate in the draft, and how they will fare in the rookie camp.

All teams appear to be strong, although I think the Yellow team got the upper hand with the presence of Ken Bono, JC Intal and Marvin Cruz in one team. Reed Juntilla also lends additional offensive firepower. Juntilla is one of the draft pool’s best shooters, if not the best.

The success of the Blue team will depend on the health and physical conditioning of Samigue Eman. The 6-10 252-lb hulking center is reportedly in tip-top shape and that could only mean bad news to those who will be tasked to guard him. Eman is an athletic monster who is very active on the defensive end. He will be teaming with Yousif Aljamal, and point guards Macky Escalona and Jonas Villanueva. Escalona is projected to be drafted in the second round but he could push himself on the first round with a strong showing in the camps. Keep also a close tab on Jojo Duncil. Duncil did not plan to apply for the PBA Draft this year but questions arising from his age prompted him to advance his pro aspirations a year earlier. Whether he is ready for the pros will be determined by his performance in the rookie camp.

The White team is deadly with an inside-outside combo of JR Quiñahan and Ryan Reyes. Ryan Reyes is the ultimate point guard - great size, athletic ability, solid perimeter shooting, fearless driving inside, playmaking ability, defensive ability, makes good decisions with the ball, and very confident with his abilities. He is, in my opinion, a top 5 pick. I will not be surprised if Ronjay Buenafe steals the thunder from his highly-profiled teammates. He is a lights-out shooter with defensive ability. He is, I think, the most natural scorer in the draft. The darkhorse for the White team is Filipino-Australian Daryl Pepito. Pepito stands only 5-9 but has courtsmarts and the guile to outpoint much bigger players. If Pepito can generate excitement and impression in the draft camp, he can earn first round consideration.

The Red team is also formidable with the tag-team of Doug Kramer and Joe Devance. Kramer is no-nonsense player who loves the dirty work down low while Devance is an inside-outside threat who can almost do it all. Jeff Chan, Ryan Araña and Khiel Misa have solid scoring and defensive abilities to be a factor on both ends of the court.

Who would be the camp’s next Nelbert Omolon, Marc Pingris or Paolo Hubalde? All three parlayed a strong rookie camp into a spot in the first round.

Ranking the Aspirants by position

Note: Position is based on projected position in the pros and not necessarily their playing positions while in the PBL or in their collegiate career. I have only listed players who are likely to be drafted and stayed away from unknowns and those that are long, long, longshots to be drafted. Here it goes…


CENTERS

1. Samigue Eman 6′10″ C University of Mindanao
In terms of potential, he is on top of the list… Immediately caught the attention of scouts 5 years ago with his size, athleticism and coordination… played varsity ball as the starting center for the University of Mindanao Wildcats… He was a product of the Tryouts ng Bayan, a program by business tycoon Jean Henri Lhuillier to discover talents from all over the cities and provinces … He saw action in various international meets as a member of the Lhuillier-sponsored RP Team… very raw but has potential to be a great shotblocking presence in the pros… He could be the next Marlou Aquino with better agility.

2. Karl Kenneth “Ken” Bono 6′6″ C Adamson University
Tore up the UAAP and the PBL last season… winning the UAAP MVP and was on the PBL Mythical Selection… best shooting big man to come down the pike since Alvin Patrimonio and Jun Limpot… could score 20 points even in his sleep… range extends up to the three-point area… he’s kinda slow and conditioning will be a factor but his play in the UAAP and the PBL last season indicates that he’s ripe for the pros.

3. Jose Ronald “JR” Quiñahan 6′6″ C University of the Visayas
Best center prospect to come out of the Visayas since Ramon Fernandez… carried the Green Lancers to a dynasty trip, leading his school to the CESAFI title in his entire collegiate career… Nicknamed “Baby Shaq” because of his uncanny resemblance to NBA star Shaquille O’Neal and the way he terrorized the Visayan leagues… Very good post-up player with a soft touch from the perimeter… Led the PBL in shotblocks the past season… Looks shorter than his listed height of 6’6” but has a great wingspan to cover up for it… he’s kinda slow but he’s very very wide and can bring down the ball on the break.

4. Francis Barcellano 6′6″ C Far Eastern University
Seldom-used big man who has size and solid fundamentals… played collegiately for the Far Eastern University Tamaraws… projected to be no more than a role player… could get drafted because he has one thing which can’t be taught – height… a willing banger.

5. Kenneth Coyukang 6′5″ C Jose Rizal College
Former PBL first pick overall… other than being tall and big, nothing else is worth saying… he could be the second coming of Mark Kong, which means in PBA lingo, he will be destined as a benchwarmer if he gets drafted which will be quite a longshot.

POWER FORWARDS

1. Joe Devance 6′7″ PF University of Texas-El Paso
Still needs a certificate of DOJ confirmation to be declared eligible in the draft… there’s no question he will be a great catch because he has size, game and versatility… won the PBL MVP two seasons ago and led his team Toyota Otis to the PBL finals… Played varsity ball for the UTEP, a division I school in the US NCAA… can play any of the three frontline positions, although power forward figures to be the position he’s more comfortable at… Go-to move is posting up on the left side of the basket and using great footwork and pump fakes to extricate himself from defenders… can play back-to-the-basket or facing it… has 3-point range… shot selection needs to improve though, as well as passing out of double-teams… Game is on the finesse side and rarely takes the ball strong to the basket.

2. Doug Kramer 6′4″ PF Ateneo de Manila
“The Big Doug”… A Rudy Hatfield starter kit… compensates lack of size with great strength, positioning and tough mindset… Sunk the winning basket off a Macky Escalona inbound pass which lifted the Ateneo Blue Eagles in game 1 of their title showdown with UST last year… Led the PBL in rebounding last conference… has made his mark as a defender in the amateurs and that doesn’t figure to change in the PBA… always tasked to defend the other team’s top big men even if he is terribly undersized… range is limited but he is a very intelligent player who knows what he can and can’t do on the floor… you want some showbiz stuff? Well, Doug’s girlfriend is TV personality Cheska Garcia, which is well, public knowledge.

3. Joel Solis 6′5″ PF Philippine Christian UniversityA very athletic player with great length and leaping ability… game could be best suited in the pros… starred for the title-winning 2005 PCU team in the NCAA… could get drafted based on potential and size… will be a very nice role player.

SMALL FORWARDS

1. John Christopher “JC” Intal 6′4″ SF Ateneo de Manila
Dubbed “The Rocket” because of the way he explodes on the floor… Make way Niño Canaleta, you now have a worthy challenger in the All-Star dunking competitions… Beat Canaleta in one of the dunking cagefest in a PBL all-star event using a Vince Carter dunk using the elbow to finish it off (Canaleta missed his last dunk)… Used the UAAP last season to announce he’s ready to enter big-time basketball… vastly-improved perimeter shooting touch and slashing ability will make him a greater force in the pros… athleticism is off the charts… needs to continue to add strength and improve defensive ability to make a mark in the pro league.

2. Yousif Aljamal 6′4″ PF San Beda College
Played all of his collegiate life as a power forward but has to shift to small forward in the pros… Plays like a young Vic Pablo – has solid perimeter shooting skills with rebounding ability… may struggle in the pros with his “tweener” status… he’s not strong enough to guard the big 4s and 5s and may lack the lateral movements to guard the league’s quick and athletic threes… however, if Pablo was able to make it, there’s no doubt this guy can.

OFF GUARDS

1. Ronjay Buenafe 6′1″ OG Emilio Aguinaldo College
One of the true sleepers of the draft… has a scorer’s mentality… can heat up pretty quick… standout of the Emilio Aguinaldo College Generals… one of the few players on the draft pool who excels on both ends of the court… pretty feisty… perimeter shooting is impeccable… quick release is similar to Gary David… fearless going to the hole… shot selection is one thing he needs to improve on.

2. Jeffrei “Jeff” Chan 6′3″ SF Far Eastern University
One of the purest shooters in the draft… has great size… one of the best rebounders at his position… is not afraid to shoot the ball when the game is on the line … excellent defensive player who can block shots… sees the court very well… slashes, and drives inside.

3. Reed Friar Juntilla 6′1″ SG University of the Visayas
Belongs to a long line of great Visayan shooters such as Boy Cabahug, Ricric Marata, Moises Abangan, Carlito Mejos, Felix Duhig and Dondon Hontiveros… played for the University of the Visayas before taking his act to the PBL at Hapee to replace star guard June Simon who was elevated to the pros… one of the PBL’s top scorers.

4. Ryan Araña 6′1″ SG De La Salle University
Excellent defensive player who also has a deep offensive arsenal… proved that he can score (exploded for 38 points in one PBL game last year), and make stops at the same time… his jumper has improved tremendously enough to make defenders pay if they leave him wide open… at his best in driving to the basket where he uses incredible craftiness and an assortment of moves to get away from defenders.

5. Joselito “Jojo” Duncil 6′1″ SG University of Sto. Tomas
Created a lot of fuss in the UAAP after there were questions arising from his eligibility… Those issues forced him to dip his hand into the pro league, advancing his career plans by a year… a pure scorer… has potential to be good player in the pros because he can score from literally anywhere… loves to drive to the hole and fish some fouls… he’s one of the reasons why UST won the UAAP title last season.

6. Dominador “Noy” Javier 5′11″ OG University of Perpetual Help Rizal
If he’s only at least 3 inches, he could have a chance… A specialist… He’s a long range bomber and a dangerous scorer… he’s a combo guard who can explode any night without warning… Is he a “1” or a “2”… lacks great size to be an effective “2” guard in the pros… also lacks playmaking ability to be able to play the point guard spot effectively well in the pros… he’s also not known as a defensive player but could get a chance from teams looking for an instant scorer off the bench.

7. Joferson Gonzales 6′2″ OG Mapua Institute of Technology
He’s a shooter with great size… played varsity ball for the Mapua Tech Cardinals.

8. Jeffrey “Jeff” Bombeo 6′2″ OG Far Eastern University
Does nothing fancy nor spectacular… plays it simple but works hard on both the offensive and defensive end… a role player nonetheless… could be a longshot to be drafted.

9. Frederick “Derrick” Hubalde 6′1″ OG University of Sto. Tomas
Brother Paolo was drafted in the first round two years ago after a stellar rookie camp… hopes to follow the same route but still a longshot to be drafted… he’s hoping maybe Ginebra coach Jong Uichico (one who drafted Paolo) is again interested.

10. Donald Tadena 6’2” OG Holy Cross of Davao College
A three-point specialist from the MVBA… native of Cagayan de Oro… his ticket to the pros will be his three-point shooting which is already somewhat of a lost art in the PBA… he’s a key player for the Manny Pacman Warriors but he will be quite a longshot to be drafted.

POINT GUARDS

1. Ryan Reyes 6′1″ PG Cerritos College
The next great Fil-Am guard to invade the PBA after Ricky Brown, Jimmy Alapag, Jeffrey Cariaso, and Mark Caguioa… created quite a stir in the PBL with his deft outside shooting, fearless penetration down the lane, and excellent feel for the game… Has the size, athleticism and playmaking skills to be able to play both backcourt spots with ease… a cross between Jeffrey Cariaso and Jimmy Alapag… led the PBL in steals the past campaign.

2. Jonas Villanueva 6′1″ PG Far Eastern University
Was already a highly-touted guard even before he saw action for the FEU Tamaraws in the UAAP… great peripheral vision and looks quite a natural when he’s handling the ball and dishing it to open teammates… strong perimeter shooter with great accuracy on the three ball.

3. Marvin Cruz 5′8″ PG University of the Philippines
Probably the most exciting guard to come out of the amateur ranks since Johnny Abarrientos… despite standing only 5’8”, he is one of the better rebounding guards in the country… a statbuster – scores, grabs rebounds, generates steals, and even blocks shots despite his diminutive size… MVP of the 2007 SEABA tourney… very very fast and can change the complexion of a game with his speed, hustle and gung-ho attitude.

4. Mark “Macky” Escalona 5′11″ PG Ateneo de ManilaRose to become one of the point guards in the amateur circuit… lurked behind the shadows of LA Tenorio but he was handed down the cudgels by the school last year, hew wasted no time in proving he has what is takes to be a top-flight point guard in the pros… has a great size to run the point… highly-improved perimeter shooting and decision making make him a valued prospect at “1”

5. Khiel Misa 5′10″ PG University of Perpetual Help-RizalA scoring point guard… led the NCAA in average points last year and was also one of the league leaders in assists and stills… looks up to Alaska guard and fellow Olongapo native Willie Miller… he’s one of the best guards to come out of the NCAA ranks since Boyet Bautista last year… he’s unlikely to be drafted in the first round because this year’s draft is deep in point guards.

6. Mark Moreño 5′10″ PG University of Mindanao
Former UM Wildcat who is making a name in the PBL as a true blue playmaker… ranks among the league leader in assists and steals… not a scoring threat… needs to improve his free throw accuracy and perimeter shooting to have a pro future… in a league where there are less and less pure point guards, he stands out and will be valuable to teams lacking in a true playmaker.

7. Daryl Pepito 5′10″ PG St. Edwards College
A flashy guard from Australia… played for the Hornsby Spiders in the Australian Basketball Association… member of the RAL Kabayan Titans who saw action against the PBA Legends in an exhibition held 2 years ago in Sydney, Australia…. Other than that, there is not much information about him… he need to impress scouts in draft camp to earn draft consideration

8. Ronnie Zagala 6’0” PG FEU/PSBAcombo guard who can heat up pretty quick… applied for the draft two years ago but withdrew his name from consideration… unless he performs out-of-this-world in the rookie camp, he’s unlikely to be drafted.

9. Alex Angeles 5′8″ PG San Beda CollegeStarting point guard for last year’s NCAA champions San Beda Red Lions… Needs to have a strong rookie camp to be able to gain the nod of scouts.

All teams appear to be strong, although I think the Yellow team got the upper hand with the presence of Ken Bono, JC Intal and Marvin Cruz in one team. Reed Juntilla also lends additional offensive firepower. Juntilla is one of the draft pool’s best shooters, if not the best.

The success of the Blue team will depend on the health and physical conditioning of Samigue Eman. The 6-10 252-lb hulking center is reportedly in tip-top shape and that could only mean bad news to those who will be tasked to guard him. Eman is an athletic monster who is very active on the defensive end. He will be teaming with Yousif Aljamal, and point guards Macky Escalona and Jonas Villanueva. Escalona is projected to be drafted in the second round but he could push himself on the first round with a strong showing in the camps. Keep also a close tab on Jojo Duncil. Duncil did not plan to apply for the PBA Draft this year but questions arising from his age prompted him to advance his pro aspirations a year earlier. Whether he is ready for the pros will be determined by his performance in the rookie camp.

The White team is deadly with an inside-outside combo of JR Quiñahan and Ryan Reyes. Ryan Reyes is the ultimate point guard - great size, athletic ability, solid perimeter shooting, fearless driving inside, playmaking ability, defensive ability, makes good decisions with the ball, and very confident with his abilities. He is, in my opinion, a top 5 pick. I will not be surprised if Ronjay Buenafe steals the thunder from his highly-profiled teammates. He is a lights-out shooter with defensive ability. He is, I think, the most natural scorer in the draft. The darkhorse for the White team is Filipino-Australian Daryl Pepito. Pepito stands only 5-9 but has courtsmarts and the guile to outpoint much bigger players. If Pepito can generate excitement and impression in the draft camp, he can earn first round consideration.

The Red team is also formidable with the tag-team of Doug Kramer and Joe Devance. Kramer is no-nonsense player who loves the dirty work down low while Devance is an inside-outside threat who can almost do it all. Jeff Chan, Ryan Araña and Khiel Misa have solid scoring and defensive abilities to be a factor on both ends of the court.

Who would be the camp’s next Nelbert Omolon, Marc Pingris or Paolo Hubalde? All three parlayed a strong rookie camp into a spot in the first round.

Ranking the Aspirants by position

Note: Position is based on projected position in the pros and not necessarily their playing positions while in the PBL or in their collegiate career. I have only listed players who are likely to be drafted and stayed away from unknowns and those that are long, long, longshots to be drafted. Here it goes…


CENTERS

1. Samigue Eman 6′10″ C University of Mindanao
In terms of potential, he is on top of the list… Immediately caught the attention of scouts 5 years ago with his size, athleticism and coordination… played varsity ball as the starting center for the University of Mindanao Wildcats… He was a product of the Tryouts ng Bayan, a program by business tycoon Jean Henri Lhuillier to discover talents from all over the cities and provinces … He saw action in various international meets as a member of the Lhuillier-sponsored RP Team… very raw but has potential to be a great shotblocking presence in the pros… He could be the next Marlou Aquino with better agility.

2. Karl Kenneth “Ken” Bono 6′6″ C Adamson University
Tore up the UAAP and the PBL last season… winning the UAAP MVP and was on the PBL Mythical Selection… best shooting big man to come down the pike since Alvin Patrimonio and Jun Limpot… could score 20 points even in his sleep… range extends up to the three-point area… he’s kinda slow and conditioning will be a factor but his play in the UAAP and the PBL last season indicates that he’s ripe for the pros.

3. Jose Ronald “JR” Quiñahan 6′6″ C University of the Visayas
Best center prospect to come out of the Visayas since Ramon Fernandez… carried the Green Lancers to a dynasty trip, leading his school to the CESAFI title in his entire collegiate career… Nicknamed “Baby Shaq” because of his uncanny resemblance to NBA star Shaquille O’Neal and the way he terrorized the Visayan leagues… Very good post-up player with a soft touch from the perimeter… Led the PBL in shotblocks the past season… Looks shorter than his listed height of 6’6” but has a great wingspan to cover up for it… he’s kinda slow but he’s very very wide and can bring down the ball on the break.

4. Francis Barcellano 6′6″ C Far Eastern University
Seldom-used big man who has size and solid fundamentals… played collegiately for the Far Eastern University Tamaraws… projected to be no more than a role player… could get drafted because he has one thing which can’t be taught – height… a willing banger.

5. Kenneth Coyukang 6′5″ C Jose Rizal College
Former PBL first pick overall… other than being tall and big, nothing else is worth saying… he could be the second coming of Mark Kong, which means in PBA lingo, he will be destined as a benchwarmer if he gets drafted which will be quite a longshot.

POWER FORWARDS

1. Joe Devance 6′7″ PF University of Texas-El Paso
Still needs a certificate of DOJ confirmation to be declared eligible in the draft… there’s no question he will be a great catch because he has size, game and versatility… won the PBL MVP two seasons ago and led his team Toyota Otis to the PBL finals… Played varsity ball for the UTEP, a division I school in the US NCAA… can play any of the three frontline positions, although power forward figures to be the position he’s more comfortable at… Go-to move is posting up on the left side of the basket and using great footwork and pump fakes to extricate himself from defenders… can play back-to-the-basket or facing it… has 3-point range… shot selection needs to improve though, as well as passing out of double-teams… Game is on the finesse side and rarely takes the ball strong to the basket.

2. Doug Kramer 6′4″ PF Ateneo de Manila
“The Big Doug”… A Rudy Hatfield starter kit… compensates lack of size with great strength, positioning and tough mindset… Sunk the winning basket off a Macky Escalona inbound pass which lifted the Ateneo Blue Eagles in game 1 of their title showdown with UST last year… Led the PBL in rebounding last conference… has made his mark as a defender in the amateurs and that doesn’t figure to change in the PBA… always tasked to defend the other team’s top big men even if he is terribly undersized… range is limited but he is a very intelligent player who knows what he can and can’t do on the floor… you want some showbiz stuff? Well, Doug’s girlfriend is TV personality Cheska Garcia, which is well, public knowledge.

3. Joel Solis 6′5″ PF Philippine Christian UniversityA very athletic player with great length and leaping ability… game could be best suited in the pros… starred for the title-winning 2005 PCU team in the NCAA… could get drafted based on potential and size… will be a very nice role player.

SMALL FORWARDS

1. John Christopher “JC” Intal 6′4″ SF Ateneo de Manila
Dubbed “The Rocket” because of the way he explodes on the floor… Make way Niño Canaleta, you now have a worthy challenger in the All-Star dunking competitions… Beat Canaleta in one of the dunking cagefest in a PBL all-star event using a Vince Carter dunk using the elbow to finish it off (Canaleta missed his last dunk)… Used the UAAP last season to announce he’s ready to enter big-time basketball… vastly-improved perimeter shooting touch and slashing ability will make him a greater force in the pros… athleticism is off the charts… needs to continue to add strength and improve defensive ability to make a mark in the pro league.

2. Yousif Aljamal 6′4″ PF San Beda College
Played all of his collegiate life as a power forward but has to shift to small forward in the pros… Plays like a young Vic Pablo – has solid perimeter shooting skills with rebounding ability… may struggle in the pros with his “tweener” status… he’s not strong enough to guard the big 4s and 5s and may lack the lateral movements to guard the league’s quick and athletic threes… however, if Pablo was able to make it, there’s no doubt this guy can.

OFF GUARDS

1. Ronjay Buenafe 6′1″ OG Emilio Aguinaldo College
One of the true sleepers of the draft… has a scorer’s mentality… can heat up pretty quick… standout of the Emilio Aguinaldo College Generals… one of the few players on the draft pool who excels on both ends of the court… pretty feisty… perimeter shooting is impeccable… quick release is similar to Gary David… fearless going to the hole… shot selection is one thing he needs to improve on.

2. Jeffrei “Jeff” Chan 6′3″ SF Far Eastern University
One of the purest shooters in the draft… has great size… one of the best rebounders at his position… is not afraid to shoot the ball when the game is on the line … excellent defensive player who can block shots… sees the court very well… slashes, and drives inside.

3. Reed Friar Juntilla 6′1″ SG University of the Visayas
Belongs to a long line of great Visayan shooters such as Boy Cabahug, Ricric Marata, Moises Abangan, Carlito Mejos, Felix Duhig and Dondon Hontiveros… played for the University of the Visayas before taking his act to the PBL at Hapee to replace star guard June Simon who was elevated to the pros… one of the PBL’s top scorers.

4. Ryan Araña 6′1″ SG De La Salle University
Excellent defensive player who also has a deep offensive arsenal… proved that he can score (exploded for 38 points in one PBL game last year), and make stops at the same time… his jumper has improved tremendously enough to make defenders pay if they leave him wide open… at his best in driving to the basket where he uses incredible craftiness and an assortment of moves to get away from defenders.

5. Joselito “Jojo” Duncil 6′1″ SG University of Sto. Tomas
Created a lot of fuss in the UAAP after there were questions arising from his eligibility… Those issues forced him to dip his hand into the pro league, advancing his career plans by a year… a pure scorer… has potential to be good player in the pros because he can score from literally anywhere… loves to drive to the hole and fish some fouls… he’s one of the reasons why UST won the UAAP title last season.

6. Dominador “Noy” Javier 5′11″ OG University of Perpetual Help Rizal
If he’s only at least 3 inches, he could have a chance… A specialist… He’s a long range bomber and a dangerous scorer… he’s a combo guard who can explode any night without warning… Is he a “1” or a “2”… lacks great size to be an effective “2” guard in the pros… also lacks playmaking ability to be able to play the point guard spot effectively well in the pros… he’s also not known as a defensive player but could get a chance from teams looking for an instant scorer off the bench.

7. Joferson Gonzales 6′2″ OG Mapua Institute of Technology
He’s a shooter with great size… played varsity ball for the Mapua Tech Cardinals.

8. Jeffrey “Jeff” Bombeo 6′2″ OG Far Eastern University
Does nothing fancy nor spectacular… plays it simple but works hard on both the offensive and defensive end… a role player nonetheless… could be a longshot to be drafted.

9. Frederick “Derrick” Hubalde 6′1″ OG University of Sto. Tomas
Brother Paolo was drafted in the first round two years ago after a stellar rookie camp… hopes to follow the same route but still a longshot to be drafted… he’s hoping maybe Ginebra coach Jong Uichico (one who drafted Paolo) is again interested.

10. Donald Tadena 6’2” OG Holy Cross of Davao College
A three-point specialist from the MVBA… native of Cagayan de Oro… his ticket to the pros will be his three-point shooting which is already somewhat of a lost art in the PBA… he’s a key player for the Manny Pacman Warriors but he will be quite a longshot to be drafted.

POINT GUARDS

1. Ryan Reyes 6′1″ PG Cerritos College
The next great Fil-Am guard to invade the PBA after Ricky Brown, Jimmy Alapag, Jeffrey Cariaso, and Mark Caguioa… created quite a stir in the PBL with his deft outside shooting, fearless penetration down the lane, and excellent feel for the game… Has the size, athleticism and playmaking skills to be able to play both backcourt spots with ease… a cross between Jeffrey Cariaso and Jimmy Alapag… led the PBL in steals the past campaign.

2. Jonas Villanueva 6′1″ PG Far Eastern University
Was already a highly-touted guard even before he saw action for the FEU Tamaraws in the UAAP… great peripheral vision and looks quite a natural when he’s handling the ball and dishing it to open teammates… strong perimeter shooter with great accuracy on the three ball.

3. Marvin Cruz 5′8″ PG University of the Philippines
Probably the most exciting guard to come out of the amateur ranks since Johnny Abarrientos… despite standing only 5’8”, he is one of the better rebounding guards in the country… a statbuster – scores, grabs rebounds, generates steals, and even blocks shots despite his diminutive size… MVP of the 2007 SEABA tourney… very very fast and can change the complexion of a game with his speed, hustle and gung-ho attitude.

4. Mark “Macky” Escalona 5′11″ PG Ateneo de ManilaRose to become one of the point guards in the amateur circuit… lurked behind the shadows of LA Tenorio but he was handed down the cudgels by the school last year, hew wasted no time in proving he has what is takes to be a top-flight point guard in the pros… has a great size to run the point… highly-improved perimeter shooting and decision making make him a valued prospect at “1”

5. Khiel Misa 5′10″ PG University of Perpetual Help-RizalA scoring point guard… led the NCAA in average points last year and was also one of the league leaders in assists and stills… looks up to Alaska guard and fellow Olongapo native Willie Miller… he’s one of the best guards to come out of the NCAA ranks since Boyet Bautista last year… he’s unlikely to be drafted in the first round because this year’s draft is deep in point guards.

6. Mark Moreño 5′10″ PG University of Mindanao
Former UM Wildcat who is making a name in the PBL as a true blue playmaker… ranks among the league leader in assists and steals… not a scoring threat… needs to improve his free throw accuracy and perimeter shooting to have a pro future… in a league where there are less and less pure point guards, he stands out and will be valuable to teams lacking in a true playmaker.

7. Daryl Pepito 5′10″ PG St. Edwards College
A flashy guard from Australia… played for the Hornsby Spiders in the Australian Basketball Association… member of the RAL Kabayan Titans who saw action against the PBA Legends in an exhibition held 2 years ago in Sydney, Australia…. Other than that, there is not much information about him… he need to impress scouts in draft camp to earn draft consideration

8. Ronnie Zagala 6’0” PG FEU/PSBAcombo guard who can heat up pretty quick… applied for the draft two years ago but withdrew his name from consideration… unless he performs out-of-this-world in the rookie camp, he’s unlikely to be drafted.

9. Alex Angeles 5′8″ PG San Beda CollegeStarting point guard for last year’s NCAA champions San Beda Red Lions… Needs to have a strong rookie camp to be able to gain the nod of scouts.

I have 27 minutes of unedited footage from the camp today.

Eman managed to reach a 11'7" vertical, but we both agreed that his CNS was not "awake" (meaning he'd jump higher in a game).

He weighed in at a solid 255lbs From a distance, he's beginning to take the form of Alonzo Morning. Another big man next to him (wasn't sure who) said, "You are too damn big...how can you be that heavy and not be fat...this isn't FAIR!!"

I wasn't able to get his final numbers from the Blue vs. Red scrimmage, but he took on both Kramer and DeVance, sometimes 2 on 1 and was fearless. I believe he scored 9 points with 2 or 3 blocked shots. In the opening minutes of my footage he took on both big men from red, straight up, and scored an easy 2.

Both Kramer and DeVance also had some good minutes. DeVance hit a 3 in the opening, showing his range.

Eman showed that the presence of his enormous body was enough to get basically everyone to get as far away from him as possible. He was able to easily handle both DeVance and Kramer in the paint and out-muscle them for position.

At this point I probably sound biased, but Eman is basically unstoppable as long as he isn't triple-teamed...as in Shaq unstoppable on a team with set plays to draw the defense into a one on one or two on one. DeVance was VERY impressive as well, but both Eman and DeVance have equal catlike quickness. Pound for pound, Eman delivers an enormous body in addition to said speed. Since I haven't seen enough of his game, I cannot say what else he has in his arsenal, since I'm not his skills coach. But few would say that we are lacking in big men with brutal power and quickness now with this new draft.

I have to edit it down to less than 10 minutes before I can post it on youtube but I'll try to do it tomorrow....and I'll also try to get some footage if I have time to catch up with Sam tomorrow at Day 2. I had to leave before I could watch much of the 2nd game but Bono got off to a good start.

Aljimal did a decent job for blue as Kramer did for Red. Also Jonas V. was knocking down shots left and right in game 1. Most of the time I was filming my athletes so I wasn't able to get a good handle on what many of the others were doing unless they were in the mix with my guys. I'll keep as much as I can intact, just to edit out dead space in the footage that I have and post it asap tomorrow.

POTENTIAL top draft picks Samigue Eman and JC Intal were among those who showcased excellent skills during the strength, agility and endurance tests that ushered in the three-day PBA Rookie Camp yesterday at the Moro Lorenzo Sports Center.

Edilgusto Soriano, Alex Angeles, Donald Tadena, Daryl Pepito, Macky Escalano and Dom Javier also impressed scouts and coaches who were present, proving they have what it takes to join the pro bandwagon.

Eman, a prized recruit by Rain or Shine from the University of Mindanao, was measured tallest among all 47 applicants at 6-foot-8 while Ken Bono, a former UAAP MVP, was the heaviest at 104 kilograms. Eman also has the longest wingspan at 86.5 inches.

Soriano, a San Beda product, emerged as the best in bench press and push ups, doing 37 and 75 repetitions in separate tests, while Angeles, another Red Lion, was No. 1 in pull-ups with 23.

In the agility drill, Intal and Tadena of Rizal Technological U shared top honors with 4.72 seconds.

Intal, at 6-foot-3, emerge as the best leaper, doing 10’11 in the vertical jump and 11’3 in the long jump. Eman did 11’3 in the vertical jump and 11’3 in the long jump.

Pepito outsprinted everybody in the 60-m dash with a clocking of 7.31 seconds while Escalano and Javier tied for No. 1 in sit-ups with 66 each.

Apart from the strength, agility and endurance tests, this year’s PBA aspirants, who have been divided into four groups, will also play three games each in the three-day Accel-sponsored rookie camp that should provide coaches a glimpse of what’s in store in the Draft market.

Noy Javier is a deadly shooter. Seen the guy play, he can ball. Once played for addict mobile San Beda (Ekwe-less lineup) and for a non Bedan, he was the main man of the team. Had a great senior year for his school unfortunately they lost eventually. (Sila ba yung nakalaban ng Beda nung sinablay ni Arjun Cordero yung gam winning layup?, shyeetters brings back sad memories for a Bedan ).

Why is Intal that hyped so much? This guy can't shoot.

Dunking doesn't always translate to being a good player. The best dunker in the world, james white, can't even set foot on an nba floor. He was on the spurs roster last year tho but has since been released.

Basketball is still a skills game. Physical measurements matters little if your actual playing ability is not up to par.

Kevin durant was the only player who couldn't bench press 185 in the recent nba draft camp and tested very poorly in strength and agility measurements; yet he's far and away the best bball player in the draft. And he had the best freshman season in the history of the US ncaa's.

In the 05 camp, monte ellis tested as the 2nd poorest athlete. MONTE ELLIS!! Imagine that. The dude has iverson speed and marion hops! He's probably a top5 athlete in the whole nba.

Iggy was also a bottom 5 athlete when tested in his draft class which is ridiculous. Personally, I think he and lebron are the best athletes in the nba today. Their combination of speed, leaping ability and strength is beyond comprehension.

Wait 'til actual scrimmages happen b4 people should make pronouncements who shines and what have you in the draft camp.
