Will Charice Pempengco Be a Rival for Celine Dion?
By jobythebay, published Oct 03, 2008 One day I was watching Oprah. She introduced a 16-year old girl along with a film of her life. I had never heard of Charice Pempengco but looking online I see others have videos of her which helped make her known by other people (not me) and in fact Charice has her own website http://charicepempengco.com/. I remember when watching Oprah that it was noted that one day this amazing singer will just be known as Charice. I think that day has come given what has happened to her since I saw her on Oprah. What I found so amazing about this singer from the Philippines who has been singing since she was a very little girl and whose hero is her mom are the two sides of her. Watching her on Oprah I saw a little girl who easily cried. Her crying was from pure happiness and I'm sure disbelief that this fame is happening to her. The other side is what comes out of her when she opens her mouth and sings. Charice had a tough childhood. She watched as her father tried to kill her mother while, though only about 4 years old, she stood helplessly by and feels guilty that she did nothing. Meanwhile neighbors heard the commotion and saved her mom. Charice hasn't seen her father since. She has a manager in the Philippines, but Oprah has decided to manage her here in the United States. I think Charice would be a hit sensation all on her own but with Oprah backing her it's a sure bet. I watched this young girl who was crying like an 8 year old stand tall (although she's little) and sing in what can only be described as an amazing voice. What comes out of her is truly a gift. She sang "Because You Loved Me" which was a mega hit by Celine Dion. The fact she picked that song says a lot about how she feels about Celine. So when Oprah surprised Charice with Celine through video conferencing the tears just continued. This is a girl who was invited to Italy to sing with another idol, Andrea Bocelli. They sang "The Prayer." This performance was shown on Oprah's show so I now have a pretty good idea of just how gifted this 16 year old truly is. Well back to Celine who praised Charice and then invited her to sing with her at Madison Square Garden. There wasn't a dry eye in the audience or in my house. In fact I was so taken with Charice that I didn't erase that show because I wanted to share it with my husband who was also taken and was to be moved even more. Fast forward to a few days ago when Oprah who wasn't at Madison Square Garden but whose best friend, Gail, was. Oprah showed the performance. Charice came out wearing a dress fit for an 8 year old (I don't know if this is a marketing ploy.) complete with a bow around it and the barrette which is now a Charice trademark. I wouldn't be surprised if we don't see young girls wearing their hair like Charice does. She told Celine Dion that she was nervous. I could hear Celine tell her she'll be fine. Charice seemed to metamorphosize from this little, scared girl to a voice that rivaled Celine's own voice. The song of course was "Because You Loved Me" dedicated to Charice's mom who sat in the audience more composed than my husband or I were. Charice's performance was nothing short of sensational. She hits amazing notes. Celine in the background probably more nervous than Charice at that point raised her hand as in "success" when Charice hit some tough notes. There was no sense of nerves in Charice who took over the stage and sang like a true professional. This is one girl to listen to. I get the chills just thinking about her voice. We can only be happy for this girl who led a tough life make it big. The first thing she did it seems was to move her mom into a nicer (by Philippine standards) house. Much of her money until this point has been won through contests from which she has many trophies which she proudly displays. http://www.associatedcontent.com/art...rival_for.html thanks to miyam of charicediva.com |

Charice offered US stay by David Foster, says mom
abs-cbnNEWS.com | 11/13/2008 9:01 AM American record producer and composer David Foster, the manager of international singing sensation Charice, has offered the young Filipino star to move to the United States, her mother has said. In an exclusive interview with abs-cbnNEWS.com , Raquel Pempengco, Charice’s mother, said Foster told them that it would be convenient to stay in the US while the singer attends to her commitments abroad. "Ang sabi niya ay mag-stay na nga kami doon kasi nandoon na 'yung career ni Charice pero hindi nga ako pumayag kasi nandito pa si Koykoy (Charice younger brother)," the mother said. Pempengco said that she would prefer to return to the Philippines from time to time, even for just a few days because of her son's schooling. "Talagang ‘yon ang plano nila na dapat mag-stay kami doon. Ang pakiusap ko lang kahit na three days na pahinga dito sa Pilipinas o four days masaya na kami basta nakakauwi lang dito. Gusto nilang lumipat e ang bunso ko ay hindi pa pwede gawa ng nag-aaral pa. Siyempre mas gusto ko pa din dito kasi nakasanayan namin dito," she said. She admitted that big opportunities await Charice in the US but they always long for home after each show since they would also want to spend time with family and friends. "Alam mo nandoon talaga malaking opportunity na umasenso talaga sa Amerika kaso kapag nandoon kami ang isip namin ay nandito pa din at ganoon din ang mga paa namin parang laging nais agad na makabalik," she said. She added that even Charice rejected that idea of staying in the US for good because all her friends are in the Philippines. "Nandito din ang kaibigan niya. Sabi niya OK lang na mag-stay doon pero mas gusto niyang umuuwi," she said. The mother said they go abroad only for work. "Alam mo talagang ang punta namin doon ay trabaho. Talagang minsan niyaya kaming magpasyal ayaw namin. Pumunta kami doon para ma-trabaho talaga. Si Charice dito nya gustong mamasyal, mas gusto niya ditong mag-shopping," she said. The young diva is scheduled to fly to the US next year and stay there for almost three months to record her first international album that will be produced by Foster. "OK lang mag-stay doon pero gusto ko pa ding bumabalik dito kahit saglit kasi ayaw kong makalimutan ako ng mga kapwa ko Filipino," Charice said. Charice is also set to guest on “Wowowee's” show in San Diego, California later this month. |

Charice at Macy's event with Miley & Idol David FUNFARE By Ricardo F. Lo Updated November 17, 2008 12:00 AM After her eye-popping guestings on Ellen and Oprah, and live performances with the likes of Celine Dion, Andrea Bocelli, Josh Groban, Alicia Keys and Michael Bublé, what’s next for Charice? A lot, according to Funfare’s Big Apple correspondent Edmund Silvestre. “Charice will join Hannah Montana megastar Miley Cyrus and American Idol runner-up David Archuleta as headliners of this year’s Macy’s annual Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City on Nov. 27,” said Edmund in a special report. “The event, presented by Macy’s, the world’s largest retail store, is one of America’s most lavish celebrations seen by over 3.5 million live spectators and over 44 million televiewers across the US. Aside from famed celebrities, the event’s notable attractions are its inflated giant balloons in the shape of well-loved cartoon or comic book characters.” Macy’s is also the sponsor of the annual Fourth of July Fireworks Spectacular in NYC which featured the pre-recorded song of Lea Salonga (Just Beyond The Dream) in its magnificent fireworks display last year, also seen by millions. Charice, Miley and David will ride on different colorful floats and will perform separately along with other notable artists such as James Taylor, Andy Williams, The Cheetah Girls, Broadway superstars Idina Menzel and Kristen Chenoweth, the cast of Broadway musical Hairspray, the muppets cast of Sesame Street, plus Miss USA Crystle Stewart. Edmund added that the NBC telecast of Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade will be hosted by Today Show’s Matt Lauer, Meredith Vieira and Al Roker (three of America’s most famous TV personalities). It will be aired on NBC network from 9 a.m. to noon (US East Coast time) in each of the four time zones in the continental US. “Fil-Ams Oliver and Chona Cajanding of Society Hill, Jersey City, N.J. said they will watch the parade along with their teenage son, Gerald, and brave the freezing temperature just to see Charice up close. “Oliver said that they already saw Charice in person at the Philippine Independence Day celebration in Manhattan last June, and they became instant fans. Oliver noted how cute Charice is and that she looked younger than her age (16). ‘She’s down-to-earth and always smiling,’ said Oliver. ‘Hindi nga nagagalit kahit ang kukulit ng fans na nagpapa-picture’.” Last Oct. 28, Charice was also in the Big Apple to grace the celebration of Macy’s 150th anniversary at Gotham Hall, with Sean “Diddy” Combs, Eva Mendes, Jessica Simpson, Martha Stewart, Tommy Hilfiger, Clinton Kelly, Kenneth Cole, and celebrity chefs Ming Tsai, Tyler Florence and Todd English. On Oct. 29, she sang at David Foster’s birthday dinner event at Bon Appetit Supper Club in Manhattan in front of guests who included Donald Trump, Gayle King, Clay Aiken and Dr. Phil. The next day, she was in Beverly Hills, California’s Hilton Hotel for The Big Bash, the annual Rising Stars Gala organized by the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Los Angeles. Charice is also part of David Foster’s newly-released album titled Hitman: David Foster & Friends which hit the stores last Nov. 11. Her track is included in the album together with songs from music icons Kenny G., Michael Bublé, Josh Groban, Brian McKnight, Katharine McPhee, Andrea Bocelli and Celine Dion. Said Edmund, “On Nov. 19, Charice will promote the new album on Good Morning America on ABC, broadcast live from the Times Square in Manhattan.” It will be Charice’s second time to promote on a US TV show, the first having been on CBS New York. Media insiders said Foster is now in the process of looking for the right album material for Charice, who is backed by Oprah Winfrey no less. “They want to release an album by Charice while she’s very hot in her guestings and appearances,” an insider said. “All eyes are on this girl, everyone wants to meet her and the industry is watching how far will this girl go.” With David Foster and Oprah Winfrey behind her, how can Charice go wrong? http://beta2.philstar.com/Article.as...bCategoryId=70 *** |
