Shoving and pushing are very common and part of their daily life. You don't have to say sorry also when you bump a local.

back from beijing! went to forbidden city, great wall and temple of heaven, tiananmen and olympic area. no guides necessary. didn't even have a map. we just asked the concierge to write down the chinese names and addresses of the places in hotel cards to show to the cab. didn't bother going inside the silk and pearl markets, although we passed by these places. we also went to wangfujing area, the village and the bar area in sanlitun. nahuli yung pag post ni commoner of the nicer malls. sayang, di na kami umabot dun coz those escaped my research.

was lucky coz for the whole stay there, it was sunny and the sky was blue for the most part! but it was super cold. i had thought late fall-early winter pa lang coz mid-november pa, but parang full-on winter na talaga dun. subzero nginig. as in the leaves of some trees had crystals hanging from them. was adequately clothed pero extremely cold talaga coz everything was outdoors and subjected to the bone-numbing wind ka talaga. halos magtago na ako sa loob ng scarf at the great wall. some locals wore padded face masks. we spent a lot of time inside shops and malls to thaw.

i so don't think it's a good idea to go there on january. better to go on early fall siguro, so you can cover more ground during the day without freezing.

courtyard marriott didn't have a nice bathroom, but the room was ok and it was very ideally located. lots of malls surrounding it, near subway, 24-hr restaurants, easy to get taxi, near to almost everything. we didn't bother taking subway since taxi was very cheap and efficient. and did i say that it was too cold to walk to the subway stations? we conserved our heat for the sightseeing.

i have to make special mention of the honesty of beijing people. nahulog yung n97 cellphone ng kasama ko sa mall and we discovered it sa hotel na. tinext ko yung cell for the finder to return it to the hotel, but we didn't hope much coz english yung text ko. after 30 min, the front desk informed us that somebody returned the cell. tapos on the way to the airport, i left my handbag containing sony hx1 camera, plane tickets and cash sa cab. we forgot to get the fa piao, so we didn't have any way of knowing who the cabdriver was. after 15 minutes of standing outside the airport terminal, the cabdriver found us and returned the bag voluntarily. i gave him 200rmb for his efforts. grabe, as in amazed talaga ako sa taga-beijing.

also, the cab drivers return change, kahit 1rmb lang, without you asking for it. yung receipt or fa piao, you have to ask for it sometimes coz some drivers don't give you the printout. better to really get the fa piao in case you leave something behind.

thanks for all the help i got from this beijing thread!

Is it okay to visit beijing on chinese new year? im worried about the weather since most of the places to visit are outdoors.

And im coming from singapore. Do you know in china embassy here they temporarily suspend to issue a tourist visa for all filipino citizen since september of this year. Its disappointing because we already bought our tickets na this february.

If come february and this situation is still the same and the weather in Beijing is still freezing, we might consider rescheduling our trip around April or May with longer stay & enough time to visit Xian's Terracota Warriors.

I don't think it's good to visit China during chinese new year, all tourist spots will be jampacked. Weather will still be very cold specially if you are coming from Singapore.

maybe you're a tourist in singapore? ito kasi yun site sa chinse embassy sa singapore http://www.chinaembassy.org.sg/eng/lsqw/qz/t585199.htm nakasulat: "5. Non-Singapore citizens shall provide documents that entitle them to reside for an extended period of time in the Singapore, such as a PR, WP, EP, STP, DP. Temporary visitors to Singapore should apply for a Chinese visa in their own country. For the special case, the visa officer has the rights to make the final decision on whether issuing a visa or not."
