Barrios wants PBA out of RP team
Barrios wants PBA out of RP team
By WAYLON GALVEZ The all-pro team that placed 9th in the previous FIBA-Asia Olympic Qualifying meet in Japan could be the last international tournament for the PBA. This was the suggestion made by PBA Commissioner Sonny Barrios as he asked the board to consider the scrapping of the "pickup" system in forming a national team that has not worked since professional players started to don the national colors 18 years ago. "My point was that it’s obvious that our market will not be attracted during the games if we don’t have the stars of the show," Barrios said after the board meeting where Solar Sports was awarded the TV rights yesterday. Barrios said that the last Philippine Cup and the current Fiesta Cup this season did better than the previous one in terms of gate revenue and TV ratings. "We’re doing better by 59 percent over last season. And it’s not because of the 'Sonny Barrios magic' but because our marquee players were with the national team," Barrios said. The league commissioner was referring to last season’s Fiesta Cup where superstars like Mark Caguioa, Jay-Jay Helterbrand, Asi Taulava and Keryby Raymundo were loaned to the national team. That Chot Reyes-mentored squad backed by SMC failed to qualify to this year’s Beijing Olympics after it placed ninth overall. In the Asian Games, the best finish of the PBA-backed team was second or a silver medal behind China in Beijing. The all-pro Centennial Team won a bronze medal during the Bangkok Asian Games. The PBA-RP team twice finished fourth in the Asian Games — the 1994 in Hiroshima, Japan and 2002 in Busan, Korea. "I think that the pick up system of supplying the national team doesn’t work. Not only for the national team but it’s more harmful to the league (PBA)," Barrios said. "We need to support the programs of the SBP (Samahang Basketball ng Pilipinas) on the medium and long-term modes on how to have players for the national team and we have to move away from the pick up system," he added. Barrios was recently named together with board chairman Tony Chua, previous chairman Ricky Vargas and Talk ‘N Text governor Manny V. Pangilinan, currently the SBP president, as league representatives to the SBP board of trustees. According to Barrios, there are other ways to support the SBP and the national team "financial and non-financial." This includes the possibility of inviting the RP-Youth coached by Franz Pumaren to play in the PBA as guest team in the near future to prepare them for the 2012 London Olympics qualifying meet. "If they play together for the next three years, they’ll be ready. It’s patterned after the NCC (of Ron Jacobs). Instead of going back to the PBA again," he said. |

Eala had different vision for the league to go global and compete with the best. This is the problem when an old folk heads the league old crap system, don't wanna take risk and no vision for the league.
The RP youth team, it's players are gonna be aspiring for the PBA also. The tallest and talented players are in the PBA so the league should give back and serve the Philippines. |

I agree. This is what we missed from Noli Eala, sure he may have some biases but he had the vision to have the best players in a full-blown national team program, say what you want about them losing last year but the PBA has the best possible players available.

kumag talaga tong barrios na to...wala ng ginawang mabuti para sa PBA...old school boy na gustong ibalik yun dating PBA na walang pakialam sa philippine basketball...gusto rin nito ibalik sa 3-conference format ang PBA di ba?
now, we miss noli eala a lot! |

RP Youth?, eh pag dating ng 2012 nasa PBA na ang mga players ng RP Youth, at hindi na rin maka join ng RP Team. Tama ba ang plano na yan?

barrios is a temporary commissioner, right? then we need to have a new and young commissioner who's willing to take a calculated risk, just like eala.
BRING BACK NOLI EALA TO PBA! |

from a businessman point of view, barrios maybe right..national team is nothing but a disruption to pba..add the fact that they always get criticisms from the so called basketball geniuses..
pba can continue supporting the national team provided that the SBP works with them..(not like the old and dead BAP) |

Barrios bats for long-term cage scheme
Wednesday, May 28, 2008 PBA commissioner Sonny Barrios is going to pitch for the adoption of a long-term program for the national team featuring young amateur players as he sits on the new Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) board of trustees. “We have to move away from the pick-up system which has not worked since time immemorial. It doesn’t work,” said Barrios after discussing the program with the PBA board which he eventually represents in the SBP board. “I’ll pitch for long-term planning. It’s not reinventing the wheel. That’s the successful NCC (Northern Consolidated Cement team) model. I want the PBA to support the SBP program through the youth team of coach Franz Pumaren. Keep them together for a long period of time and they should be ready for the London Olympic qualifier,” Barrios added. Barrios believes nothing good would happen to both the PBA and the national cage federation if they continue to use their old system of forming pro selection for international competitions. “It didn’t just come out of my head. It’s based on historical facts,” said Barrios, noting the best the PBA-backed RP teams could produce was a silver medal in the 1990 Beijing Asian Games. “It’s been 18 years since the PBA started sending players to international competitions, but it really doesn’t work. It won’t work,” Barrios added. Barrios noted the 59 percent improvement of the PBA gate receipts this season from the same period last year when the national team was preparing for the Tokushima FIBA-Asia Olympic qualifier. “It only shows that the PBA fans don’t want the league stars away from the league. The PBA is a Filipino basketball for Filipino fans in the Philippines,” said Barrios. “There are many other ways to help the national team. There’s the financial way and non-financial way. We can help them raise funds. We can help them in goodwill games,” Barrios added. Barrios will be with Talk n Text team owner Manny V. Pangilinan, PBA board chairman Tony Chua and PBA immediate past chairman Ricky Vargas in representing the pro sector in the new SBP board. The SBP will elect its new set of officers on June 12 in Dusit Hotel in Makati. – Nelson Beltran -this is just ********.. don't you guys forget.. the plan of then coach chot reyes was to have a long term program.. to have a pool of players from the pba to comprise the national pool (like that of the NBA, CBA, NBL, Euroleages, KBL, JBL, SBL, FBL, Iran Basketball, etc... practically all leagues in the WORLD!!!) and from the pool, after the season of the PBA is over (which if you don't remember was altered to accomodate international competitions) they would form the team. so the plan was not to disrupt the season but to have a pool of PBA players for international competition.. last year was a different case because of the suspension!!!!!!.... this is what they have to consider, chot reyes had a plan way back in 2004 pa FOR THE 2008 OLYMPIC QUALIFIERS!!! Sonny Barrios is just an OLD TRADITIONAL PBA EXECUTIVE (almost like a TRAPO)!!! i really miss Noli Eala.. he had a vision!!! Sonny Barrios doesn't have a vision.. i am sure this would not be in favor of the SBP.. i just can't understand why other leagues (which are bigger than us - NBA, NBL, CBA, etc..) lend their players for international competition but we can't.. are we the biggest league in the world? i know the PBA is a business.. that is why Noli Eala changed the schedule so as to not disrupt the business.. it's just that we had the suspension!!! Sonny Barrios makes the PBA so special!!!! i just hate it... ask the PBA players and they would really want to play against the likes of Hamed Heddadi, Yao Ming, Yi Jianlian, Ha Seung Jin, Fadi El Khatib, Rashiem Wright, or even Fabricio Oberto, Manu Ginobili, Dirk Nowitzki, Pau Gasol, Juan Carlos Navarro, Tony Parker and even Kobe Bryant, Lebron James, Chris Paul, Dwight Howard (all of them playing in PROFESSIONAL LEAGUES like the PBA).. i just don't see the logic.. and the youth team right now even if they don't get to play in the PBA will not stand a chance next year in the FIBA ASIA championships as well as the Olympic Qualifiers.. they can't improve unless they play in the PBA!!!!!! my two cents worth... |

Barrios is part of the old system like Rudy Salud and Jun Bernardino who are league first and put the league over the country.
What Barrios conveniently forgot is the fact that when Chot started the National team, the players wouldn't even be taken from their pro teams. They had once a week practices during the season. Only during the offseason will the pros ramp up their practices to say every other day. And then during the lull between the seasons, that's when the pros play in international tournaments. So basically, there's no disruption to the schedule of the PBA. The only reason why pros were taken from their teams was because we were cramming for the Olympics. But under a long term program, pros need not be taken from their teams during the season. Barrios has amnesia, and needs to be reminded of that fact. |

I don't think this Barrios realizes that the PBA cannot exist in a vacuum and just content itself with its two (or if he gets his will three) conference seasons a year and that's it. We Filipinos pride ourselves in being a basketball crazy nation and we dream of competing with the best and showing our true worth against international competition. How can we honestly say that we are sending our best basketball players if we restrict them into playing in just the local league and not expose them to what the best has to offer? Does he think basketball fans will troop to the PBA games and watch a league that basks in its own misguided glory?

honestly, i think that sonny barrios is an incompetent commissioner, one of the worst ones...
it is not only with this statement but with the other things he handled like the James Yap controversy, meeting up with Sta. Lucia executives and other transactions he mishandled.. how i really wish noli eala didn't do the acts he did before.. noli eala was very bold and dynamic.. now we are really going back to the old days... but the thing is fans right now have been exposed to all types of basketball because of BTV (Euroleague, Spanish League, NBA, NBL, CBA, SBL, etc..) fans now know that we are not that superior in terms of basketball and the game is evolving... unlike before that fans really think highly of the PBA because we were still winning in international competitions and we are not yet exposed (TV) to basketball from different countries.. sonny barrios is just thinking within the box and not out of the box.. i'm sure chot reyes would be furious with this statement by sonny barrios... since pato gregorio is out of SBP now, i think he is the most qualified person to run the PBA as commissioner... he has almost the some fire and passion as noli eala's... my two cents worth... |

Palagay niya tataas ang sales ng PBA kung walang RP Team?
Yung mga manonood sa probinsya ng PBA alam nila pag dating ng Asian Basketball Tournaments (FIBA, Asian Games, etc.), expect na nila na may PBA. How can we prove that we are the first professional league in Asia, not even winning in Asia. By this plan, we will be surpassed by leagues in our own region the South East Asia. Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand continuously enhancing their leagues for a cause of winning in the region and to beat Philippines soon. C'mon we are the only country in our region that basketball is a religion Sayang naman sa music video ni Bon Jovi na "These Days" na pinakita ang Philippine flag tapos may nag dribble ng basketball |
